Where do I begin?

Literally anyone can be pulled off the street, trained in a few days, and are good to go to be a "Bloer". Education background in hair or makeup?  Don't worry, your dog could work here!

Owners have no background in the beauty industry, so be prepared to forget EVERYTHING you thought you knew about hair and makeup if you work here to cater to what corporate taught these people. Sanitation? Oh, no, that's not a thing when we do makeup but God forbid you forget to clean a brush. Hydraulic chairs? Don't use them the way they were made to be used, just break your back so clients can stare at themselves for the whole service! Products? Mmm, love that silicone coating on my hair! "Standards"? What are those?

I literally had to educate the owner of my location (Etobicoke, ON) about pretty much everything, because all she knew about hair was that she liked to get hers done. Clueless about product. Clueless about customer service. Clueless about what it takes to style hair all day, every day, back to back. There was no boundaries on how badly a client could treat an employee, so long as the money went into her pocket, all was good!

Want a break? Well, no, we don't schedule those because what if a client wants to book in that time slot? "Well other Blos don't..", well other Blos offered benefits, so if we are comparing, why aren't you? Be the one that stands out.. Wait, what? No? Okay. Watch your location succumb to the infamous high turnover of this franchise, since they're cheap and treat their employees like garbage. 

If you couldn't make it to work that day, for whatever reason, be prepared to be harassed incessantly by management and the owner, or perhaps even worry about being terminated via text. If you can't work 12hrs and have no breaks, you're pretty much useless to them, and you can be replaced for a month or two before they have to hire to replace your replacement again. Just the nature of the franchise. 

Word of advice - want to be in the beauty industry? Go work for a salon, go work in film and television, anywhere but here.. You're better off. Nothing respectable about a place like this. 

In summary, really, there's zero respect, education, work ethic, incentive, team players, etc. Save yourself the embarrassment of having Blo on your resume, I wish someone had warned me.

Honestly, this place was a joke. Originally hired as a full time employee, my hours got cut down to two or three shifts a week without an explanation. They would cancel shifts or tell you to leave early or give your shifts to another stylist without so much as a warning.

The training here was rushed and the customers are way too picky. Don't like to be left waiting, you say? Sorry but I'm not a robot. They'd forget to schedule your breaks and if you got one and were running behind on a client, too bad, you don't get a break at all. They'd schedule people back to back and then rush you, resulting in poor styles and then you'd be poorly reviewed.

Need a weekend off? Tough stuff, you're not allowed.

Need a day off for an emergency? Be prepared to receive countless texts asking if you're coming in later.

Think you're going to be working at a place that isn't full of gossip? Jokes on you boo, because that's all everyone does here. Think the managers are nice? Think again. They're probably making fun of your accent behind your back and complaining that you quit.

Is makeup something you want to do long term? Not anymore! The standards are so high but the product is the worst and the clients will say they love it but then talk about how much they hate it behind your back.

Management really have no idea what they're doing. When you reach out about a situation they provide solutions (which if you have industry experience, don't make sense). Alot of the time they don't understand their own systems. They will reprimand you and send company wide  emails just tearing into staff regularly. Managment do not communicate effectively and punish the staff as a result. They do not take feedback from staff. There is a lack of respect for employees and their time. For an 8 hr shift and they will only give you a 30min break and might put it an hour or 2 into your shift. They will take advantage of you in any way they can if you let them. They make promises of commission which they have a history of with holding. Management lashes out when you voice legitimate concerns. The staff are usually great to work with and clients are usually pleasant but this is not a long term place. There is great pay potential but they will burn you out create a hostile environment and deny any wrong doing.

Honestly, if you’ve never done hair before, it’s a good place to start, but if you have even a little bit of experience be prepared to be treated like you don’t. The pay sucks, they have no respect for experience, boundaries, or even if someone close to you passes away. They gaslight you into thinking you are the problem. And even if you get a “promotion” it’s most likely because someone else had enough and quit. NO current employee  has worked there for more than a year, but they make you lie and say you have. Even their job post says “strong staff retention” when the majority of people working there have been there a few months. They also want you to work like a dog during busy times but when it’s slow they cut you left and right. Even if you work hard, exceed sale goals (because they push you so much), and go above and beyond… if you don’t kiss A** they do not value you. You are literally disposable. If you want to grow in this industry, don’t even consider this place, if you’ve never done hair and don’t mind working minimum wage and all the above mentioned, go for it.

It is a very fast paced environment, where you will be busy most of the day, especially during the weekends. I have learned a lot of great skills since working with Blo starting in 2015. We are like a little family at our particular location. The hardest part of our job is definitely the long hours on our feet, but the Clients make up for that. Another downside is that corporate has still not come up with a benefits plan for us in all the years I have worked there. It would definitely be appreciated given the physical nature of our job. I think that would be an incentive for many more of us to stick around, especially since it’s a female dominated job, and lots of us have families. I love the flexibility that management gives me with my schedule, I love the clients and I also love my Coworkers.

Bloor west location - For the most part, the other stylists were nice and talented...too bad they aren't well compensated for their work. Minimum wage basically...... when the styles are $50 plus. The goals they try to make you reach is impossible and u do not get any compensation on the small chance of acheving them. They make u work like a dog and expect so much from u while given you nothing in return. They take advantage of hiring desperate people and immigrants to be easily exploitable, all the while the owner walks in once in a blue moon and does nothing but micro manage. Seems nice at first but isn't too nice at all. Also listens in and watches employees through cameras. Very cheap often no breaks and any breaks are not paid. Overall avoid. Pretty much no one has worked there for over a few months.....maximum one year. 



Never in my life have I seen such unprofessionalism and immature behaviour from adult employees. They would trash talks very single costumer, complain about them not tipping “enough” “bad breath” “bad hair” just unacceptable. The boss is hot tempered and disrespectful. The way they resolve issues at work is by blaming it all on you and they’re not organized. Schedule isn’t definite as it can literally change the same day you come in to work. The employees aren’t very welcoming, you just feel out of place. The starting pay isn’t fair for the amount of work you have to do. Honestly just look for another job, if you respect yourself and want to be at ease and at least feel welcomed at work just go somewhere else. There are far better companies/stores that won’t be this way.  

One of the worst companies I ever worked for. They place you “on call” when they don’t have clients for you. Have to work at 1pm? They’ll tell you that you shouldn’t come in at 12:30. They cut your hours until you can’t pay your rent, but you’re on call so you can’t get another job around the schedule. This company needs to get it together. They shrink appointment times by 30% during the holidays. They lie about your pay in their listings too, you make minimum plus tips, no matter how long you’re there, and the tips are always awful. Want to hate your life? Work here. 

The staff are nice and you can get good tips. However management and the owner thinks you have to devote your life to the company. You have to work back to back with clients and you only get a 30 min break to eat and relax . If you go over your break that's too bad. You get no health care or benefits. You can also get " labor managed" if there's no clients, so hours arent consistent. Management is all over the place and no one seems to communicate properly.

I truly regret working for this company/store. Management (owner) was terrible to deal with, they had weird policies i personally do not agree with at all and find unfair to employees. The environment was not welcoming at all and the employees are kinda hard to deal with since they don't like "being rushed".. althugh theyre not running lat eon their next appointment. Overall stressful and poor satisfactory level for employees. 100% do NOT and would NOT recommend to anyone I care about.
