CP as a whole is a great company to be a part of. They really care about their employees and want them to be happy. Their corporate responsibility and ethical mentality is second to none.

In my department, it's difficult to "quickly" advance - typically takes around 3-5 years to become seasoned and ready to find a new opportunity. That's not a surprise though, you're kept informed about that from the day you interview. If you keep at it, keep learning, and keep growing, the advancement will come and it will be in an area of interest to you, you just have to reach out and make the connections (CP is a big fan of inter-functional networking). It's a matter of trusting the process. And, through it all, you're compensated well, too.

High turnover in the role, but that's by nature. Be ready for swapping between day and night shifts, and for difficult schedule changes. If you become comfortable with those, its an exciting role with lots to offer for a new grad.

The head office is based out of Edmonton, Alberta, with trading and back and middle office functions based out of Calgary, AB. The office in Calgary has around 100-150 staff.

The most recent position that I managed was trading a book of REC assets (port opt and spec) and managing the NOx/SO2 compliance for US assets.

The most challenging part of this opportunity was convincing an Alberta utility company of the potential of the US climate markets. I spent alot of the time explaining the product and not the strategy.

The people at Capital Power are very talented and knowledgeable about the Western power markets (PACNW, California and Alberta).

I was a summer student for 2 consecutive summers and also fall and winter of the 2nd year. I worked at the Genesee plant. 
I genuinely loved my time there. It  was an excellent learning opportunity and I, a person with anxiety, found the coworkers incredibly pleasant. The company gave several learning experiences for a student worker to increase their knowledge base and also improve their overall value in the workforce via resume seminars, leadership speakers, and volunteering.

The company cares about their employees, no organization is perfect, but this organization is really trying.  The fact that they do regular employee satisfaction surveys and listen to the feedback and implement viable changes says a lot about the organization.   

Tragically, the old boys club mentality prevails. If you are prepared to “look the other way” and “condemn the contract regardless of performance” you will enjoy a successful experience. 

Unfortunately, budget and schedule far exceed worksite safety unless you are the performing contractor, then everything you do is inadequate. 

Sadly, after over 35 years working in construction, little has change with owner management outlook. 

One of the best places I have ever worked at, amazing work life balance and opportunity for advancement. 4 day work week is amazing,most of the people that work there are amazing. The pay is highest in the industry. This power plant is the cleanest PowerPoint you will find to work in. Coal plant is well maintained and cleaned unlike most coal plants. The boss barret was awesome but unfortunately there is alot of politics that has been getting out of control

Great company to work for. Good team spirit and integration 

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Driving to and from work on workdays was the most stressful. Especially if you are living far from the work site.

Capital Power is definitely committed to its people. They like to give people days off monthly, and work hard to accommodate requested time away. At the plants, site bonuses are common.

From the top to the bottom, Capital power has one of the best ingrained safety cultures I have ever had the pleasure of working in. I learned a lot there and I finished my contract as a better safety professional then when I started.

Since the new CEO came in and brought Elon Musk style management in, the place has become a terrible place to work. People are put last and are treated as expendable. Half the company quit when offered packages, so all the long-term knowledge has left. Best to steer clear as they slowly sell off the Canadian assests and transition to a US first company.

Horrible culture of backstabbing. A scratch and claw to the top mentality. Work their people very hard with empty promises while upper management enjoys the fruits of the workers labour. Very top heavy salaries with the majority of the profits being paid out to executives through profit sharing program. No regards for the staff within the organization. High turnover rate explains a lot
