I loved working for Carrier Sekani for the first few years. On the surface, their mission and values are in the right place, and the salary and benefits are good. I adore my clients and my immediate team and supervisor. 

HOWEVER, management and non-front line departments such as HR, IT, and Communications, have absolutely no idea what front-line staff do and how hard our jobs are. They prioritize bureaucratic nonsense like constant new policies, irrelevant online trainings and publicity "campaigns" over tangible change focused on service delivery. It has been so discouraging to be working yourself to the bone as a front line worker in community, constantly understaffed and doing your best to meet the constantly growing need, and see that the organization has no interest in hearing concerns from front-line workers and adapting as needed. 

I started this job a healthy, happy person, and am currently so stressed and burnt out that nervous breakdowns on the job are becoming normal. We are in desperate need for more staff, and instead of actively posting our openings on every possible job site, offering hiring bonuses, or visiting universities/colleges and distributing postings through professional colleges... they hired a private film production company AND a private communications firm (when we already have a communications department in house?!) to create a super-polished short film portraying the work we do as being "different", beautiful, and positive, etc.... I don't understand how this will result in more hires, and it also feels like a slap in the face that they are more focused on spending money to make our work APPEAR good then actually supporting front-line service providers so that our work can ACTUALLY BE GOOD. In fact, it more often feels like management/HR/IT/Communications spend their time wondering how to add more stress to front-line workers, and that management cares more about the organization's public image than the quality of our services. 

I do believe in the intent and potential of this organization but won't be working here much longer, because the gap between the management and front-line workers feels so massive, and I don't see us being adequately supported anytime soon. It's heartbreaking. I am posting this not only to share with prospective employees, but also in the hopes that our image-obsessed management sees it and maybe takes some of this to heart, because I don't know how else to get their attention. The way this organization is currently working is NOT sustainable and not effective, and they really need to take a long look at themselves and re-orient to what really matters - having adequate staff, who are well supported, so that we can offer the high level of services that the member nations and communities deserve and are paying for. 

Carrier Sekani Family Services is a great place to work. The head office likes to keep in touch with the different departments and programs. I love the fact that the executive directors are fond of participating in various programs and events. 

The youth services department is a very effective team and is committed to providing any and all services to local and abroad children and youth.

My co-workers are indeed one of the best parts of the company. They strive on making friends and helping each other out. I am very pleased with the moral and atmosphere.

However, the most enjoyable part of working here is getting a chance to work with clients. We receive new clients almost every week.

In my case it was the autonomy of being able to do my job without someone closely looking over my shoulder

After I was appointed to the position of Team Lead/ Clinical Supervisor I found the stress levels went through the roof!

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Well it has now been a few years since I was in the position but at the time I found the atmosphere to be mostly respectful and collegial. 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
The typical day usually began and ended with at least an hour of travel by car.

Team collaboration and chance to continue to grow. Pension, benefits, and good wage

The job itself is stressful because of the nature of it, however there are not many stressful parts otherwise

Meetings, phone calls, connection with families

Everyday is a new day at Carrier Sekani Family Services with interesting and new challenges, where we work together as a team to find solutions to help CSFS meet its mission, vision and goals.

Its diverse and people there are fun to work with.

We serve people with dignity and respect and yeah job is fulfilling

Leaving.  Do not work for these people.

The corruption and abuse of community members.

Toxic and terrifying esp for non-indigenous ppl

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Chaotic and exhausting for the few who did all the work.

Lots of staff turnover at carrier sekani because they don't hire people based on skills. They hire friends and people who are related to them. As a result there are only a few people who work hard and many people who just sit back and get paid. Lot of bullying and lateral violence and no one ever gets in trouble. The comunities are very poor but management gets new company vehicles and trips every year.

Nepotism is alive and well.  Good pay but the more you do, the more they want from you.  Don't be too effective and you'll be ok.  If you're good, they'll suck you dry.  And your job is not safe.  All it takes is for one person to say something bad about you and you are done - if you're not aboriginal anyway.  If you are, you can pretty much do what you want and sit pretty.

The work is very rewarding and is something I feel proud to be involved in. 

But I do not feel like I have a good work/life balance, despite my boundaries. There is an expectation to take on more than what can be reasonably achieved in a given time frame, and discussing this goes no where. 

This has led to me burning out and feeling unheard.
