I'm not here to bash the company nor am I here to sugar coat anything. Chatters isn't a terrible place to work, but it's also not the greatest. The store is gorgeous, you got a fair amount of hours, there was a great team dynamic in the beginning. However, as time passed I began to realize that the pretty picture that was painted for me during my interview and from reviews is far from the truth.

They do have a lot of great "incentives", "bonuses" and ways to make additional compensation. However it is an extremely low volume store during the normal season, therefore no matter how much "hard work" you put in, it is extremely difficult to achieve sales goals and earn bonuses in the magnitude that is made seemingly possible during the interview. The "free education" you get is more of a requirement in order to keep your job and is used more as a threat than a teaching tool. You won't start out at minimum wage, as they proudly state during your interview however what they give you is barely an improvement. For the amount of work expected they should be paying several dollars more regardless of incentives and bonuses.

I will say that I learnt a lot on the customer service side due to their training program, but there are just certain behaviours and attitudes that seem to be unavoidable in retail, no matter the level. I can only hope that with time, and the right people that the store will improve, because it really has a lot of potential just some adjustments need to be made to ensure the store runs smoothly, the employees are happy, policies are followed by everyone INCLUDING management, and that the goals made are actually attainable.

I worked for Chatters as a stylist for a number of years before I just couldn't take it anymore and left. Everything that the company prides itself on in the interview process is no longer practice for this company. The minute the old CEO stepped down is when everything took a turn for the worst. What was a family focused business that made you feel comfortable and have a good work/life balance while feeling like you mattered is all gone. Everything is about numbers and if you aren't preforming to their unrealistic standards, you will constantly be made to feel like your job is on the line from upper management. There is zero job security at all, even if you're one of the more booked stylists. Zero room for advancement as well. Their ranking system for stylists is not based at all on skill, it's all about how much money you pull in for the company. So you could have a stylist that's worked there for 10 years with almost every single bit of knowledge under their belt ranked as an intermediate stylist, where as when they are desperate to hire they will bring someone in as a master stylist when their work output isn't nearly as good just because they want to lock in the hire. If you like making minimum wage in your career with no ability of getting a raise, while not even being paid enough to balance the cost of living, this is the company for you! Apprentices are treated like dirt on the floor from upper management, and if they need help they don't receive it. Hours get cut back so badly that any stylist willing to help teach the apprentice isn't able to because the "hours aren't there" even with everyone being treated as part time. Head office/management will never take responsibility for things, it's always made to be your fault even if it's something out of your control. In the years I worked for Chatters I watched more than half of the store I worked for come and go, as well as FOUR District Managers (the Chatters stores closest to where I live aren't even five years old.) I could go on and on, but to bring this to an end, this company is not what they present themselves to be. Be weary if you go through an interview. 

Working at Chatters is very below mediocre honestly. I worked for a franchised location, which for some reason apparently made most of our policies different than the corporate locations, why; I don’t know. I am positive the owner also never ran any of these changes made out of personal decision ever past the district manager or the actual corporate side of Chatters. This would go on to screw over clientele and customers, making the retail employees and stylists to pick up & deal with the mistakes constantly made by management. There was very little training, very little direction and constant criticism for any sort of mistake made when no one guided you in the right direction when asking for help. The salon and store consisted of some of the most petty drama and gossip I’ve ever witnessed at a job. The manager and owner would also enjoy involving herself in spreading a lot of the gossip to employees that had no place being involved. A lot of these rumours consisted of personal issues or minor mistakes made. Passive aggressive notes were constantly put up around the salon, but the owner & manager never though to actually speak face-to-face with employees. Pay stubs were rarely provided. The owner and manager would also have moments of anger and kick over or throw items when no one was around (caught on cctv). Also witnessed them cussing & threatening a person accused of shoplifting. Unbelievable. The manager would frequently gaslight and play favourites so you never ever knew where you stood. No one leaves on good terms, the management makes this known once you put in your notice. I would never recommend anyone work at a franchised location of a Chatters.

A typical work day looks like hoping your manager with no previous salon experience is following booking order properly, trains the front staff to book appointments properly. They will book a single haircut in the middle of your day effectively making it impossible for any other services to be booked with you.  

 The point of sale system is not good. You cannot keep extensive notes on your clients/services.  you cannot see your metrics and booking order is based off your customer retention, which means you just have to trust that things are fair and being done properly or according to policy, . they boast transparency as a company value and this is what they provide you in that realm. 

They have these tip cards that get hacked super easy, track your spending, make money off your data and then charge you to put your money in your actual bank account. They also promote paid for health care.

They have all these non mandatory video chat meetings about things like.. changing how they deliver your tips to you.. that are unpaid and on your own time and then unofficially expect you you to fill in others on the info.

They completely over staff their locations and expect you set up your station every shift. You will be lucky if whatever station you get to work in that day was cleaned up by the previous stylist.That is right, at chatters you no longer have an assigned station. 


The only reason anyone at my location got a wage increase was because they hired TFWS at a higher wage, according to my District manager. 


Honestly what little positives there are, are completely negated by the corporate culture. Working for chatters used to be good, but now you are better off at great clips.

Where to begin! 
When I first started at Chatters in 2017, I had very minimal issues with the company. The company had decent morale, and they seemed to care about their employees (as much a big company could). As time progressed, however, things changed drastically. What once was a family atmosphere turned into a cold and rigged corporate nightmare.

There is absolutely no job security at Chatters. Management will often cut hours for both Beauty Consultants and stylists with no notice, and expect you to be okay with it. Management also will schedule Beauty Consultants based on who they like and not on their actual job performance. Beauty Consultant schedules were also made with minimal notice, and often changed with the same minimal notice. Don't expect any raises either. Even the longest standing employees never got raises, or if they did, it was taken away. 

Store management gossips about their employees to other managers, as well as employees themselves. Upper management is also guilty of gossiping about other managers, and other employees. When I first started, store managers were competent at their jobs and were more professional. Chatters has now basically stopped from promoting within, and have been hiring managers from outside the company who aren't very competent or professional. 

Communication between head office, and various levels of management is very lacking. The company has become very disorganized and a non-supportive atmosphere to stylists and Beauty Consultants alike. 

The product discount and being able to get your hair done is the best part of working for Chatters.



I first joined Chatters because I was very drawn in by their promise of being an environmentally friendly salon. They only recycle select service related products. There is no recycling done for the excessive amount of empty product bottles from the back bar, any of the other excessive paper & plastic waste from retail inventory and admin supplies. Very frustrating to see.

You likely will not get paid what you're worth, especially without a fight - I frequently hear from my coworkers that "raises never happen". If you have a nice manager and district leader, they'll constantly tell you how thankful and appreciative they are of all your hard work and initiative to meet goals. If praise means more to you than a respectable wage, you're in the right spot! They'll run an individual employee to the ground without paying adequately if you let them, so be ready to utilize the greatest weapon in your arsenal, "No."

Scheduling is barely done a week in advance for our location, which makes it hard to schedule appointments or work a second job to compensate for hours you may or may not get at Chatters. It frequently feels like I'm an on-call employee with the amount of short notice shift changes and calls to come in.

The discount on products & services is very nice, and I enjoy the access to many of the products to be able to sell them better after a personal experience.

The clients can be amazing and sweet, but you'll deal with a fair amount of people who blame you for the stylist's work because "you" scheduled them with that stylist.

Worked at chatters for years, when I first started it was a great job while I was in school, the commissions were great and it gave employees the motivation to sell products to clients/customers. Management was also great at first but once our first manager left it went downhill from there. After a couple of years they started hiring almost anyone for the management position. Managers were rude, I even got yelled at for something that was actually the manager's mistake and I didn't even get an apology. I was never treated like that at any workplace before. They started taking away commissions and claimed they had a new program for the beauty consultants of a "potential" $50 bonus at the end of the month, which not only was way below what everyone used to get, but it was also impossible to achieve because you had to work full time, but they didn't wanna give employees full time hours..so nobody even had the option to make that insulting "bonus".  They also lowered the hair discount for staff, used to be 90% off and you could get your hair done for very cheap which was a great perk for employees and also the only pro left for not leaving the place for some people there. But they took that away too. This company removed compensation and benefits from employees that have been there for years rather than rewarding and promoting loyalty and good work. Now they hire junior stylists and make customers pay $70.00 for a haircut from someone straight out of hair school. You can see just from their reviews that the company is deteriorating. 

Work was really great for the first year I was working there it felt like I was appreciated and they even gave me a raise. Then my district manager went on maternity leave and we got new district managers who didn't really seem to care to get to know us. I have loved my job here at chatters and if I felt as appreciated as I did for the first year I would have stayed. I am now in University and honestly if I was offered a management position I would not have gone to university and would have stayed working with the company because I did love working there and loved doing all I did and appreciated the growth they did try to help me with. I just wish they had more one on one with me and give me advice on how to level up and what I can do to show I want a higher title. I was basically doing all the management work anyway for $18 an hour when minimum wage was increased to $17.40. I know that company, store, and LS  like the back of my hand because me as a SENIOR BEAUTY CONSULTANT TRAINED MY MANAGER AND GENERAL MANAGER AND GOT NO RECOGNITION! So I got tired and so annoyed at the under appreciation that I did leave the company.

 Honestly though my experience aside as I am a very special case if you don't go above and beyond your job description and just do the basics it is a great place to work and a great job to have as a part time gig while in school as they respect your availability and you have lots of contact with management if you need time off or have questions and concerns. 

The opportunity for professional growth within this organization appears limited. Additionally, I have observed the following considerations:

The dress code policy seems inconsistently enforced, with lighter body types seemingly permitted more flexibility in attire, while larger-bodied employees are subject to greater scrutiny. 

Management's approach can sometimes be perceived as overly critical. Raising concerns, requesting clarification due to inadequate training, or exceeding sales targets may result in significant consequences, including termination.

If you are not part of the established social groups within the team, you may experience exclusions from certain activities and a lack of engagement.

While some staff members are highly supportive and clients are generally pleasant, overall management behavior has been observed to lack professionalism.

In summary, if your goal is to find a workplace where you feel genuinely valued and welcomed, this environment is not be suitable. There is an expectation to cover for colleagues without reciprocal support when needed. Management often emphasizes minor errors that stem from insufficient training and tends to expect immediate compliance with directives despite not being formally trained for that role. The workload will be extensive, often requiring responsibilities beyond typical roles, with limited compensation and no scheduled breaks.

Where to start. First I’d like to start off by saying, This place gives me anxiety. Every day was a  high school dramedy with absolutely no one to turn to. Your managers tell the head office, head office bullies you into thinking YOU'RE the problem, not them. It’s your classic a abusive relationship. I loved my team, but the management made me feel as though I was a peon in the game of numbers and the only thing that matters is sales. Absolutely 0 support for the stylist staff, I didn’t feel appreciated, and I felt like I never did enough. They kept hiring new people, and you get pushed out, Making commission nearly impossible. I had number programs that I had to download on my phone, so they could make sure you know how terrible you have done for the week.I was belittled in the back room, with my name plastered for all other employees to see how my progress was not as good as anyone else. I was so stressed every, single, day. Bullying me into constantly thinking I’m the issue and then coming home to only be stressed around my family, over work, was enough to make me leave this place for good. I value humanity and empathy, and at chatters, you will never get that. You are a number. Nothing more.in the end I had to leave.  Value yourself. You’re worth it!
