What is the best part of working at the company?
My coworkers were supportive and enthusiastic. The students come from around the world and being able to help them succeed was very fulfulling.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
The management and the workload. Management, particularly top-level management makes decisions that are not in the best interest of the students or the college as a whole. The largest percentage of new positions have been upper level managers with little increase in numbers for frontline employees despite increases in student numbers. I worked at the college for an extended time period and have never seen so many people retire early or take jobs elsewhere.  Pay is probably the worst in BC in the post-secondary sector and doesn't help the situation.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Not supportive and depending on the immediate manager, can involve micro-management, ghosting, and bullying.

What is the best part of working at the company?
All the staff are supportive and cohesive, and the tech support for instructors is amazing. COTR Cranbrook has an excellent program variety and activities for staff, students, and the community, creating a vibrant environment. 

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
There is a steep learning curve if you haven't worked with some of the systems before, however, the staff are very supportive and understanding.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
The work environment is supportive and vibrant. The natural light throughout most of the campus is amazing. The environment is very inclusive and forward thinking.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Energizing. A mix of different people create an environment that is inspiring and increases one's world view. The day may be fast paced, however, there are other days that are paced very comfortably.

Working at the College of the Rockies was a very positive experience overall. The organization fosters a welcoming and supportive culture, where collaboration and respect are valued. One of the greatest strengths of working here is the work-life balance — schedules are reasonable, and there is a genuine understanding of personal commitments outside of work. This creates an environment where employees can do their best without feeling burned out.

The college also places a strong emphasis on creativity and engagement. New ideas are welcomed, and staff are encouraged to contribute their perspectives, which makes the work both meaningful and dynamic. I also appreciated the focus on employee well-being, with leadership showing real care for the people who make up the institution.

The one drawback is that compensation tends to be on the lower side compared to similar roles elsewhere. However, the positive culture, balance, and supportive environment make it a rewarding place to work.

I began instructing at the College in 2012 with no teaching experience, however I possessed a strong skill set with computers and a willingness to step outside my comfort zone and learn a new occupation. I began teaching with a seniors' computer class. Over the years more and more classes were added to my teaching schedule, which in many cases I completed online courses to bring my teaching skills up to date. I also prepared the training material to hand out to my students in order to ensure they had reference material at the end of classes. I was pleased to discover the enjoyment and ease of instructing, and  creating all of the training material in a concise and easy to learn format.

What is the best part of working at the company?
Working with people who feel education is important and infuse fun into each working day.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
I was fortunate that stress was rarely part of my job. 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Positive and supportive. In particular, my supervisor truly believed in what I was doing as an instructor.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Fun, challenging, rewarding and interesting.

College of the Rockies is a steady employer for those who wish to follow instructions until they retire. The union hierarchy was unbearable when it came to technology. I revised processes that amounted a savings of over $40,000 per year, this secured my position and ensured no possibility of advancement as they tended to promote those that are incapable of action to management.

All the good managers in marketing left shortly after my departure.

Good place to work for those desiring a regular 8-4 job with benefits. Occasional opportunities to advance career but limited by the union. Mostly computer and admin work for unionized staff.

Strong union culture, not enough support staff or faculty to support students. Poor pay for any specialized skills. Excessive amount of managers for few frontline staff, loud but invisible upper management.

Best work environment I've ever experienced.
From management, other workers and staff. They are all to notch.
There post is the only downfall.
Besides that it's a incredible job.

Lots of opportunities to be on policy and governance boards to give a step-up on your resume. Few entitled unionized workers who care less about the success of students than waiting to finish their day/responsibilities.
