Community Living Kingston and District

I've worked at Community Living for 23 years, starting as a part time staff in our residential division and hired full time a year later. I've worked in many different divisions and am currently a coordinator in our Community Inclusion Program. I love my job, the work I do, the team I work with and the community we are a part of. Our management team has changed over the past few years considerably, bringing some positive changes with a focus on staff wellness, core competencies, leadership building, and succession planning. Community Living's management team has always been fiscally responsible, forward thinking, and is always advocating for both persons served and staff at the provincial level. Our work culture is supportive, there are opportunities to learn and expand your skills, and I have always felt my work has had purpose and meaning

In my experience with CLKD, I have always appreciated the culture of the organization in that I have felt supported in my development, l have felt that that my feedback has been heard and taken it seriously,  and also that I have been encouraged to pursue opportunities that are mutually beneficial.  Additionally, I believe that CLKD truly cares about the well being of their employees and tries their best to ensure staff are fulfilled, challenged and supported professionally.  During my tenure, when I have experienced challenges in my personal life, I have always felt that the organization did what they could to support me and the situation.  
Finally, I firmly believe that CLKD stands by its mission and values in regards to individuals with intellectual disabilities.  Many organizations can "talk the talk", but CLKD also "walks the walk" and ensures the focus of the work always centers around the people they provide support to.  

The persons served there are great. Management is not. CLKD Kingston and District is built upon the promises of full time employment and fair interviewing for advancement, but this is not the case. 

You will be required to stay past your end time as people call in sick regularly. Management does not care about you, you are just a body. They are an organization built on part time employees and it is a revolving door of new staff regularly. If you don't like working, it may be for you, as they are pretty easy on staff. But if you are like me and enjoying putting your best effort into everything with hopes of advancement, I would look elsewhere. 

Just go to Ongwanada if you can, they pay way more, and the work is the same.

I know Kingston is short on behavioural jobs, but if you can get anything else, I would urge you to do so.

CLKD is an agency which truly values its employees and persons served. From training and policies, to coordinators/facilitators/scheduling, it is evident that at every level CLKD strives to find and implement best practices. When CLKD says they value dignity, respect, and fostering independence, they mean it. I am proud of the way this agency provides person-first support. CLKD believes in supporting individuals to live THEIR best life, however that looks for the individual. This agency genuinely loves and values individuals wherever they are at, including staff. I have always felt free to ask questions, make personal goals for myself, express any discomfort or concerns, etc.. I cannot say enough good things.   

Pros: part timers get benefits. Set up the retirement fund early its helpful. 

Cons: scheduling sucks unless you're full time which is rare to be given a full time position. Work life balance isn't much of a thing as there's no routine with Scheduling (but they say they're trying to Change that) 

Staff team- best not to trust people with any information as they will most likely use it against you. 

Management isn't the best they play favourites and you have to really push to get anywhere.  

Person serve there are great and awesome to work with. They enjoy the workers making connections with them and making their lives more enjoyable. 

It's a good starter job and helps you learn things about the working Field but it's not a forever place and try not to make it a forever place. 

I worked for Community Living Kingston and District as a camp inclusion facilitator. The Family Support Program coordinators offered amazing guidance. I loved the role, and felt like I was equipped to manage the challenges involved with one on one support care for children with disabilities. My position involved coordination with the children's parents and the camps, and helping the children fully immerse into camp life. I learned much about how best to support children with diverse requirements.

I have worked for CLKD for over thirty years and have thoroughly enjoyed the work that I do.  Philosophically this is a good fit for me, as I take value in putting the person first and ensuring that everyone has the same rights to citizenship that I myself have.  Being a part of assisting people to become connected to their communities, and to follow their dreams inspires me every day, and is what has brought me back to the job each day over the past 30 years. 

There is a toxic culture in the management. If you disagree or question issues they make you pay in some way. Transfer you, cut hours etc. They love staff that are rats and suck up. Very poor handling of COVID as well with little communication to staff exposed and no support/relief for staff working long hours. The staff are gossips and back stabbers. Enjoyed working with the people supported but the poor management overrides this. The turnover for part time staff is high and it’s sad once again that people leave not because of the job, but because of bad management.

It seems like a wonderful company that puts persons served above all but do the bare minimum to support staff when they are struggling. It's like a game. If you don't blend in as soon as possible and kiss up, you will not survive

This is a wonderful organization that does great work in the community.  It has very supportive leadership.  There are many different programs, which give lots of opportunity for you to do different types of work.  The work can be very hard and demanding at times, but is also fulfilling.  The influence that people supported and colleagues has had on me has been very positive.
