Extra Foods

This was one of the first jobs I had where I worked with people of completely different characteristics, and I thoroughly enjoyed my time working for Extra Foods. While some of the stores are slowly shutting down, and their eastern counterparts are being built in place, I would work for Loblaws again in a heartbeat.
A typical day at work as a cashier was greeting customers with a big smile and enthusiasm to help the customer as best as possible, ring through their orders as quickly and efficiently as possible and appropriately, and process money and electronic transactions. As cashiers, we were always notified by our supervisors of new sales/promotions going on, and what we could expect to come up at some point during our shifts. Communication was very strong in the team. During quiet times, there were a lot of tasks that could be completed to help be as productive as we possibly could, such as cleaning the tills, sweeping the floors to prevent accidents, and keeping shopping baskets as clean as possible.
I had a really positive time while working here, and the management was an amazing group of individuals to create a very uplifting and inspiring work environment.

Assisted customers by: informing customers of monthly in-house savings, giving clear verbal directions in finding new and old products located within the store and processing customer purchase transaction; in a efficient, fast, respectful and professional fashion.
Enjoyed being a team player and helping my fellow co-workers keep the store front end, clean and tidy. As well as offering my co-workers help in packaging customer purchases and putting away parishibles and unwanted merchandise to their proper location. Properly disposing expired products,and letting my supervisor know. This would happen only during a slow periods of the day and when my till lane was not busy.
Frequently, accepted overtime and shifts when not scheduled to work.
Informed Head, Cashier Supervisor of any necessary important appointments well in advance of new work schedule, that my family or I needed to attend. Usually asking my superior for that time off and sometimes as a written request. Communication was good between co-workers and supervisors, there is always room for improvement, from all of us.

A typical day at work looked like getting up early, driving down to the cafe, organizing the float for the till, start preparing the food stations for the day, clean and set the tables, and organize the menus. I learned a lot of communication skills, and money handling skills, and how to work individually. My manager was a little bit crazy, and closer to the end, I found out she was not licensed to manage any business, and she was into drugs and would come drunk, high, or hungover to work. My co-workers and I got along really well, there was only a small group of us, so it was nice to have support from each of them, if you needed someone to take your shift, they would do it in a heartbeat. The hardest part of my job was trying to get along with my boss who would constantly bully me out of everyone else. I was a target to her, she would constantly put me down or withhold my paycheque. But overall, I enjoyed this job a lot because I got to meet and interact with a lot of people and even some tourists who came from out of the country. I love helping people out, and showing them a good time. I learned how to bake a variety of foods and some culinary skills. 

I worked in the general merchandising department. It was so much more the just changing labels and stocking shelves. Customers always came first. I was taught to actually take the person directly to the item or at least the general area. (no pointing and saying over there, unless I was able to tell them the isle, shelf and what side and how far down.)
My day usually started with helping someone find something an item I'd never heard of. Then i'd go into the stock room and find my pallet of product to be put out on the shelves for the shift. I was an assistant in the floral, magazines, floor pharmacy, beauty, kitchen and seasonal areas. Everything had to be labeled correctly, selved and faced, put on the order form and clean. Most my shift was spent doing those things. I'd sometimes get called for a carry out or help with packing.
Hardest part: getting my pallet cleared on days that was non stop customer support, lifting trees and bags of ice melt in the winter, trying to find a weird item I've never heard of.

At first, I had to make sure everything from the day/shift before has been correctly done; then I had to do the tasks which were to be done that day like filling up candy shelves; and of course all of these tasks were to be done while doing my primary duty which was to scan each item at the checkouts. Also there used to be a "deal of the week" which we had to promote to each single customer. Having mentioned all the above, I also was responsible of customer service check out which had a totally different range of responsibilities.  
The most enjoyable part of my job was to communicate with both customers and my co-workers through which I developed many skills including team working. After 4 years experience of working at Extra Foods I learned how to set my goals and priorities in life aside from many other skills like multitasking and working under pressure. My managers and supervisors helped me to learn how to be more organized and responsible for the tasks that were assigned to me. The hardest part of my job was to stand on my feet for full shifts, at first; however, as I enjoyed communicating with customers and walking around the store to help them, I was able to overcome this challenge.

When you arrive at work you get your paper work done, ie: get your sales from the day before for your department, the shrink numbers and reduced from the previous day. Remove any reduced items that did not sell from the day before. Reduce items for that day. Fill your fresh counters, smoke house, and freezer orders for that day. When your orders arrive fill in your holes, and organize your cooler, price meat up, and fill as needed. Our manager is very helpful, and you can go to him any time. The most enjoyable part of the job is helping customers with any questions that they may have whether it is my department or helping them find something else in the store. The hardest part of the job is physically demanding, but I have managed to get through this over the years. In this type of work you must remember to rotate your product, what I mean by this is bringing older product to the front, and newer products to the back. The most important part of this job is good customer service. Unfortunately the Extra Foods Store that I currently work at is closing down on March 23, 2013, and I am now seeking other employment.

I was a cashier at Extra Foods, and I typical days work would include helping your customer purchase their groceries, bag their groceries and afterwards cleaning your till surrounding you. I learnt a lot about customer service at this job and how to deal with customers. I also learnt how to memorise certain codes and the importance of how to handle food, and customers. The management was good as they pushed you to work really hard, but my one complaint is that sometimes certain supervisors would undermine you and make you feel little. I was lucky enough that I didn't have this problem and only certain co workers did. When I was at work I kept to myself and did what I was always asked or if I needed help, I knew it was okay to call out for help. The hardest part of the job was standing all day and having to deal with really unhappy or unpleasant customers, otherwise the job was a good job for a part time student like myself. The part I enjoyed the most, was meeting all these people and building my way up in the ladder while I was there.

Extra Foods was disorganized and difficult to work at. In the beginning it was good, just focus on your work and your shift was fine. However, after a while it becomes extremely apparent that management is improper, our paystubs are inaccessible and they pay us less than what we deserve, there’s favouritism and people suck up to get higher on the ladder. The paperwork is faked/botched and the health and safety violations are insane and everywhere. People who challenge the wrongness of the store get fired, while people who go with it and break rules that, according to company policy is IMMEDIATE termination, always get off with a warning. My first few months were alright, but these last few have been causing me to break down and has been causing both psychological and physical harm.

Loved my job and the people I worked with but in general where I worked mostly the people only put in the hours. Again where I worked management listened to gossip and without proof write you up from what someone who didn't even work there said. I spent time of my own trying to organize and clean not to mention fix things in my department and was wrote up for it. It doesn't pay to care about your department which is why most employees just do their time. I quit because the assistant manager always talked to me disrespectfully and in front of other employees. our general manager was a really good boss and cared about the people he had as employees and did go that extra mile for them and the customers. Loblaws the company provided good benefits support for employees, education, mental health and paid for a gym membership, they even offered free legal advice..

Volunteering at the public library was an interesting experience to say the least. A group of teens and I set out to the library every morning during the summer and got ready for the arrival of the children. During the day of planned activities and events, we would read and assist in their learning to read for a couple hours, spread apart, then set upon fun and interactive activities. There wasn't really any management positions, but there was a worker at the public library that helped plan the events and keep the group on the task at hand. My co-workers were young and lacking experience in jobs since we were all in middle school at the time, but we experience what a job could be like and how to handle different responsibilities. The most enjoyable experience during that summer was helping the younger people of the community to learn how to read and develop their learning capabilities.
