Goodness Me! Natural Food Market

Goodness Me has gone downhill since COVID and i honestly dont see them fixing all the issues that they themselves have created.
It used to be a place where your energy and commitment would not go unnoticed but head office only cares about sales first and their employees last. They will do staff appreciation lunch to give you the illusion that its a friendly place to work at but don't be fooled. Higher ups expects a lot to be done in a day when the store is too cheap to hire more people to ensure all the tasks get done. When said task isn't done, head office berates all the store managers which then puts the blame on managers then you'll get thrown under the bus. A tremendous amount of waste gets thrown out because as stated above, they expect alot to get done with only 1 maybe 2 people are in a department at a time. Many cases of HR not investigating your reports completely. Keeping a paper trail is a must as there are alot of empty promises being made and not fulfilled.

This is a company that has built a reputation on educating customers about health and wellness, and exceptional employee treatment. Unfortunately, this could not be further from the truth. The reality is that this company is no different than any other grocery store, aside from the fact that they offer healthier options on the shelves. There are no employee reviews, so they rarely hand out raises, and if you do request a raise, you'll likely be given a 1% raise, which equals to around an additional 20 cents per hour. Supervisors make roughly a dollar more per hour than even the newest cashiers, and the company does not value longevity or experience whatsoever. No employee incentives are presented to make you want to get better at your job, and new employees are barely trained and subsequently thrown to the wolves with little education about the products being sold in the store. The mentality being told to employees is that if you don't want to do your job, someone else will do it. This company is all smoke and mirrors, and is not what you think it is. If you're a student looking for a stepping stone job, this could be the job for you. For anyone else, trust me, save yourself the frustration and look elsewhere.

The negative culture (or lack thereof at store level) is driven from top down. I was employed for 6 yrs. (I was an anomaly & stuck it out, as this was a part-time end of career interest based position.) I worked with some outstanding individuals who were NOT valued for their commitment and potential. Store manager turned over 4 times resulting in poor direction, de-motivated, under appreciated staff. The Leadership decision makers of this Co. needs to take a good look in the mirror, relinquish certain budgeting & staff management decisions, respecting their store level Managers decisions in order to retain quality & happier staff who actually know the type of customers they serve (every store clientele is different based on location!). Only then through improved communication, respect and collaboration with staff, will Goodness Me retain staff & grow customer base & thrive as a Natural food store in whichever community they serve. 

I enjoyed working at Goodness Me for at least my first half there. There were a few nice perks working in supplements, such as store trainings, free samples and products on an on-going basis. I lucked out during my time there as supplements had an amazing manager (new manager is also great!). The job wasn't really stressful, until my last few weeks there as the entire team practically had had enough and quit. There were a couple of great store managers, approachable, displayed leadership, were fair, kind, but that changed with the most recent store manager. Store morale went down tremendously. It became an unpleasant environment. What I looked forward to the most was seeing my colleagues, from all departments. Covid protocols are also lax as there are many unmasked customers in the store. This made staff feel nervous and unsafe, especially the ones, like myself, that weren't working behind plexiglass.  

Lovely people at this store!! The managers and associates are all great people to chat with and almost everyone was super friendly and fun to work with! However there’s some corporate rules and regulations that managers have no control over that made the job less enjoyable. Some scheduling can be really inconvenient not only for work/life balance but also for making a livable wage, and the schedule for certain positions wasn’t flexible enough to work around a second job. 
However part-time cash was pretty flexible.

Also, if they have a cleaner who cleans the washrooms in the mornings, why are cashiers cleaning the washrooms at night? Making sure toilets are flushed should be done at night I suppose but a full clean just for it to be done again in the morning makes no sense and they’re not paid extra for this. 

Most managers had more work than what should be expected for one person, it’s just too much, so other things get missed. They need personal lives too!!

Overall, not a bad job, and the people made it a great environment :)

Goodness me on Locke was the most toxic and negative environment I have ever worked in. As a minimum wage job at a local grocer, you would expect management to be friendly and supportive. Instead, the store manager is unpredictable and does not care about your advancement in life. Often, she would talk down to you and make you constantly feel like what you’re doing is never good enough. Other managers were fantastic, but that doesn’t change the fact that the person who runs the store creates a toxic work environment. 
Corners were cut when it came to deli food prep and produce. We would be thawing muffins outside when it was warm out so that we could put them on the shelves quicker if we ran out. We would reheat chili from the day before. 
They do give a discount which is nice, however after working there for 3 years and never receiving a raise, you couldn’t afford most of the stuff there. 

It all starts at the top, you won't go further than store management or base level of head office unless you have the right connection, even if you put the years in you are lucky to become an ASM. They will promise you will move up (they say this to everyone who is good) to get the most work out of you they can, while sending you all over southern ontario to their various locations to help out staff in the same positions or higher who lack the proper skill set they require to do their jobs. If you want to burn out quick this is the job for you. They move all of their good managers around so much that consistency is impossible. Customers are abusive and entitled as the company has a unique following, and I worked in the service industry previously. If you value your mental health, I'd pass on working for this company.

A typical day revolves around communicating what needs to be done with co-workers then prioritizing that task. I had a great grocery manager that set up ten minute daily meetings where we discussed these issues. These high priority tasks can range from: fashioning product displays, setting up end caps and receiving shipments. After that, I made sure the shelves are stocked according to expiry date. Several times a day, a customer will ask me a question which can range from: product locations, availability of products, and product recommendations. The most enjoyable part of the job was communicating with the customers and my fellow co-workers. They were always so talkative and friendly. The hardest job was answering  hard customer questions. These questions were usually "Do you have any more of X product in back stock" or "When does X product get shipped in again".

By far the best work environment I’ve experienced. Extremely positive and uplifting place to work! The employees are all such beautiful people! They are easy going and fun to work with! A great mix of awesome people!  
Management is super supportive and extremely approachable. The Store Manager is professional and kind hearted, he literally makes the store shine!!! The Assistant Store Manger has great energy and always pushes me to be my best self! 
I am always learning something new about health and wellness and the company provides many opportunities for personal and professional growth. 
The customers are all so interesting. I love connecting with new people and supporting our regular customers on their health journey!
My work literally feels like a home away from home! Thank you Goodness Me!

My coworkers were the reason I stayed for so long at this company. At the location I was at, everyone got along with each other and the camaraderie made you feel like it wasn't really work. All the managers, especially the store managers are great at what they do and are always motivating others to do great. Plus you get a nice in-store discount on everything.

Some cons I can can think of are issues like a lack of proper communication with head office and higher up management and between the stores. There is also logistical issues when it comes to incoming stock and our inventory systems. These issues were all being worked on when I left however. My only other gripes is you may get shafted for hours for part time work and raises are few and far between. A bit of favouritism plays out, but it's not really an issue.

Overall I enjoyed my experience and would recommend Goodness Me! as an employer.
