To be very honest as an Educational Assistant it's very rewarding when you see your student(s) progressing. The unfortunate part of being an EA you will encounter Administration and Teachers that can make your life miserable! No support from your Union either. In this role you get ahead if you're a YES person. Don't get injured because it's your fault. Coming in as a new Staff member I've never seen such disrespect towards Educational Assistant's. Other Educational Assistants don't bother with you, and are very territorial!  Its like being in school again trying to make friends.  In my experience the majority of teachers can be quite mean. When you report a teacher keep in mind Principals will go to great lengths to protect that teacher even when multiple complaints have been brought to their attention about the same teacher. Many Educational Assistant's have suffered serious injuries. I've listened to so many stories and the outcome is the same. In my experience and from what I've seen and experienced, this was just not for me. The benefits are great. The pay does not match the responsibilities, and you are subjected to some students that can seriously hurt you. A lot of favouritism goes on. If you're a YES person this is the job for you. As for me I am not. 

The title says it all. This is what is expected from you as a caretaker in schools under this board. Essentially,  if no complaints are received,  it's good enough. So, when teachers get accustomed to a classroom that has not been cleaned well, it becomes ok for floors to be dirty. Ok for desks to have glue and paint from days before. Light switches and door handles are high touch surfaces that need daily cleaning, but if nobody complained about week old stains on both, it's acceptable.  The kids deserve better, but Limestone District School Board doesn't give Caretakers the time to clean well enough to give your kids the learning environment they deserve. So, if you hustle really hard, you can do a decent job. If you cut corners, you can't do the job adequately, but it doesn't matter either way. Doing the best you can everyday and working yourself to exhaustion is looked at the same way as someone finished 2 hours early because they didn't do even the basic required tasks. Hard work is no better than laziness, so apply if you want a long career with job security protecting your right to slack off. Leave your conscience at the door, and feel free to make sure you don't break a sweat. Take another break, and make sure you are ready to leave early, because a minimum level of cleanliness is good enough for your kids. 

I love my job. It's just not organized, supportive and team environment.

Lack of respect for individuals is common. Mental wellness is not a priority. 

Getting help, guidance and education is extremely difficult.

Most of the problems is the government funding. It has a dramatic trickle down effect. Support resources are constantly under attack and loss of positions due to attrition is constant. Once you secure a permanent position. The security is great. It just takes years to get one. They carry a lot of casual employees with no promise of permanency. 

Spent years waiting for things to improve but the atmosphere is very negative these days and continues downward. 

The people that work with the most vulnerable and are in need of extra assistance. Are the positions lost. Lowest paid hardest jobs. Lower the support and increase the management and HR is the trend.

I hope it improves. Like I said I love my job. Its the same anywhere else. Politics are so negative that it impacts mental health dramatically.

Used to be a great employer and I believe it is the government that is driving all the low moral, lack of funding for school infrastructure and families are paying the price.

The kids are the only part that are any good within this whole board you can compare this workplace to Joyceville Institution and what's going on under that roof too amongst staff

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
They don't care about the staff at the schools at all the schools are under staffed violence is on the rise they hire anybody and everybody off the streets without a Cpic right away lord only knows who is working with our children as nobody is off limits for jobs there

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Corrupt no accountability whatsoever for the ones that are doing wrong

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Working five days a week with staff that are burned out and everyday feels like a 12 hour shift when u get home we are assigned way more kids then we should be and administration doesn't care and neither does the board managers

What is the best part of working at the company?
As an Educational Assistant the best part of working fir limestone is if you have an awesome teacher to work with.  One that does not belittle you. Benefits are good as well  

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Be prepared to be punched, kicked, spit on and have no back up as you are the back up.  Teachers are in encouraged to not help Educational Assistants.  They will say I would help but we’re told not to.  As you are being physically hurt.  As full time permanent you will only get under 37,000$ a year so financial stress is huge as well. 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Stressful, you work with behaviour kids or kids with high needs. 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Every day varies depending on which student you have.  What teacher you are working with or how you’re principal or vice principal treats Educational Assistance.

Summer student painting for the school board at multiple different schools in the district alongside a full-time worker. I learned new techniques on how to paint as well as staining and varnishing. I learned how to use power tools and how to use different tools for a smoother finish. I enjoyed working with all of the maintenance department workers, as they were all very kind and helpful to me. The hardest part of the job was the early start time, as I would be up at 4:30am to be to work at 6am and then work for 8-9 hours a day. The most enjoyable part of the job was the people I got to meet and work with. I worked with the mechanic, multiple carpenters, the tradesmen, and painters. I learned a lot even though I was only hired to be a painter, I did multiple job titles.

The hours were long, continual and sometimes frustrating.
I had chidren and my husband was away on course so I could not work the long hours an entrepreneur needs to do. We were successful in our minds.
We promised that being friends forever was important and that the business would be second AND we did that. We were originally hig school friends, and remain friends to day!!
Hardest part working hard and not getting the financial reward. Our business was building but we put everything back in to it.

I often get pre-booked for teaching assignments which makes it easier to plan my week.  I get the occasional early morning call on the day of an assignment which can be a challenge depending on travel time to a school.  The pay is good and I enjoy working with various groups of students.  However, dealing with student misbehaviour and disrespect is the most difficult part of the job.  I always communicate with the teacher I'm replacing with a note at the end of the day.  I have learned to be flexible and resourceful, and am fairly fluent in French.  My colleagues are experts on their students and easily approachable, making it easy to develop a good rapport in the workplace.

Amazing Benefits and the best pension plan. Decent wages but could be more to keep up with the economy

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Long hard shifts, sometimes the talk th talk but don't walk the walk. Mental health they talk it up to the employees and the public but try taking a day off due to your mental health, it would be laughable if it wasn't so serious

Depends what location and employee group you belong to. 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Go to work clean rooms, washrooms, floors etc in a extremely fast paced environment

Working with the Limestone Board of education at first avenue public school I learned problem solving skills, how to approach different types of behaviors'. For the most part it was a fun job for me, I enjoyed hearing the kids stories day by day when I came in the day to supervise them for lunch. For the fours I was there I have seen kids grow and become smart and lovable children over the years. So I would give this job two thumbs up.
