At the start working at Mar and Max was fine, how ever as time went on you quickly learned how little you ment to the company and how they do anything to save a dollar.  They don't really respect their employees, one of the main supervisors is openly transphobic and they don't really have to much room to grow, you disagree with them slightly and you risk being fired instead of having something worked out so they can just move on to the next person. They create a stressful workplace with no benefits instead of a career, god knows when they last had an inspector in, since in the four years I was there they did not change out the fire extinguisher nor did they show us how to get out incase of an emergency when two happened wile I was working there.  Calling in sick even if it's once or twice a year seems to be a direct attack on them since they would do all they could to get you to come in but also would not want to give you your paid vacation time off unless you put your foot down about it.  During the holidays you could also forget about your weekends since many years they had us working 7 days a week for two plus weeks with no overtime pay.  They where openly sexist and if you where a skinny girl or someone the owner found attractive they would let you wear what ever you wanted but if you where a man or male presenting or a woman they didn't not find extremely attractive you have to be much more careful with what you wore or you would face consequences, they also would get upset at women for not wearing makeup but men where allowed to not even though having a double standard like that is against the law in Canada.  When you tried to change your appearance i.e growing out your hair, they would openly ridicule your appearance and belittle you until you either caved in and cut it short again or managed to ignore it where with grows out to look nice, which really did not make for a healthy environment.   This company is all about making that extra penny than taking time for their employees, to them you are but a disposable number.  How ever because of this place I learned what I needed from an employer and work place so I guess the best thing to come from this workplace is I learned how to get a job that appreciates me and respects me, leaving has been the best part about working at mat and max.

As a stylist I would meet greet and consult with clients on a daily basis. I really enjoyed the interaction with the clients and being creative. This salon environment was not conducive to advancement as all the stylists were considered at the same level regardless of years of experience. We were also all at the same level of pay regardless of the quality of work provided. Reaching sales goals in order to make a Commission was very hard to achieve as well.The locations management changed 3 times in the short time I was at the salon, as well as the steady turn over of receptionists. There was an underlying competition and politics between the stylists as well that made for an unpleasant working environment. I enjoyed that the least. It is extremely rare that Stylists receive company benefits or sick day/sick pay.

I was hired at Mat&Max as an in-store beauty consultant. In the first months and over the years I received several trainings, including some in coloring. All interesting and relevant. They also had a good sales incentive program and great prices for employees. I was pleasantly surprised at the relaxed and yet very professional atmosphere at the company. I was quickly promoted to store manager at the location where I worked. The company is constantly evolving so there's always new opportunities for advancement, which I personally found motivating.

I always had a very good relationship with my supervisor, who was flexible, attentive and respectful towards the team. Overall I loved my experience at Mat&Max. I had a real sense of belonging and I learned a lot during my time there. Would definitely recommend.

I worked at this company for many years, and the worst part of it is the management/owners. They do not care about their employees or their happiness. To them you are nothing but a number. All stylists are paid the same regardless of experience/work, and the commission is near impossible to obtain so everyone is normally making minimum wage (unless you overwork yourself to the point of burn out. The receptionists don’t usually have a hairdressing diploma, even though they are consulting liners on professional products.  The management is always asking fo more and giving nothing in return.

Push commission items, face customer bad attitude(80% customer behavior is bad)

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
I was the only Asian who work there and I got kicked out because employee is not comfortable to work with me due to a joke I made.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Open the boutique,counting the caisses,sale most commissions items,cleaning the shelves.

I worked here for years as a Sales Consultant. I had a very negative experience. The bosses would belittle me, insult my outfit choices, and pressure me to wear more makeup. 

I was expected to arrive early, unpaid, and stay as late as necessary, also unpaid.

I did not have a healthy work-life balance as I was expected to be ready to work everyday, and my schedule would change week by week.

The pay was below average for how much I was expected to do. I would always have to do the work of my upper management without the pay increase or benefits.

Unable to respect basic working laws, changes your schedule to let the higher ups get more “free time”, they don’t care about you having a personal life, worst management I’ve ever seen. The only people that matters to them are the higher ups. 
The money that you make from sales is a joke 

It’s a hair salon & product outlet. Stylists are artists, hence a mixed bag of emotions, which can be fantastic most days, and challenging on others.  Upper Management are wonderful and supportive people. Directives were clearly stated and followed thru.

I really loved working with them they were so nice, helpful and caring
