Mohawk College

The MSA used to be a great place to work, and was well respected by students, staff, and other student associations. We provided quality services,food services and each month was filled with a variety of events for every kind of student, which everyone was always hyped to promote and work. Majority of the staff were very passionate, willing to help where ever needed, going above and beyond to make students' experiences great. Had I been writing this review a few years ago, hands down would've rated 5/5 stars. 

However, since recent changes in executive direction/management, you can see just how toxic leadership can destroy a company. The turn over rate in the past year or two has been very high; employees quitting due to the poor work environment and hard-working employees that are shockingly let go for seemingly no reason other than that they were more open to voicing their concerns and disagreement with new direction/management. (even though management would like to make it seem otherwise) There is an extreme lack of planning and direction, proper training, accountability, general support, or encouragement to grow and achieve goals. The way upper management handles coaching is also unprofessional, (you're lead to believe you're doing fine, then next thing you know you're written up or fired) and they are inconsistent in enforcing policies seemingly more so only on certain people. There is also very evident micromanagement; employees don’t seem to be trusted to make decisions and do their job based on their professional knowledge and their ideas/feedback is rarely considered. New management  and decision-making honestly seems to be more driven by narcissism and ego vs. what is actually beneficial to the employees and, most importantly, the students. 

While it may still be a decent choice for students who need the flexibility of being able to work between classes, it definitely isn’t anywhere near as enjoyable or fun as it used to be…. But if you’re considering a full-time position, I would run the other way. If you’re a passionate person who cares about feeling valued at a company, this definitely isn’t the place for you under current management. There’s a VERY high chance if you’re not just a ‘yes man’, you probably won’t last long anyways. I’m sure other staff and students would agree that we genuinely hope someone will wake up and re-evaluate the direction the MSA has been headed and take some steps back to being the fun, enjoyable, and well-respected association it once was.

What is the best part of working at the company?
The staff and people are the best part. It is a positive environment where you can thrive and grow as a person. I have worked at a multitude of different places and Mohawk was the most positive and uplifting for my character and social networking.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
It is not that stressful besides having to maintain the weight of success and failure.  Which comes from most peoples own worries as with my self. But when you work past that you realize these people are around you to help and arent actually judging you in that way in fact you are supported in your troubles!

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Environment is energetic, poised, and steady. It keeps you grounded yet on your toes. The culture is positive and negativity is shuttled away by group cooperation and teamwork, most places will preach this but here it is an actual standard. This culture is very supportive, positive, steadfast towards something bigger for yourself and allows you to see that you can be more than you may have thought. 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
A typical day may start nerve-wracking because you are held to a higher standard which in turn makes you a stronger better person which then attracts this energy so you are surrounded by more of this, leading to a snowball effect that continously allows you to face fears and march into adversity. But as long as you can just show up the day progresses and you get lost in the tasks at hand for me it was helping people with fitness goals and learning constantly about new fitness trends, programs, analytics of the industry and philosophy. By the end of the day my intial fear is vanquished and I know I truly accomplished something made a difference and just that one day of internal battle changes all types of thought processes and the way I see myself. It is a very good environment for finding out things arent all bad and to not let fear consume you. And this is only one day.

The work at the college is never the same everyday, challenging, interesting and always taxing.  A typical day at work depending of what shift I work for example: If I'm the operator, I would start up the computer login, then open the page to college site, check the operation of all five boilers check for any outstanding critical alarms, record them, and make notes to revisit the alarms to resolve the problems example if a heat pump control and status doesn't match, I would find the heat pump open fan compartment to see if fan is actually moving if it is then check the compressor if it is running if it is then check for supply temperature by measuring it and compare it to set point.  If the there is a large difference I would troubleshoot it using many tools eg. operators manual, and check references for possible errors. That is only one example that I've experience there are many other reasons for failure.  In some cases if you refer to operators manual and also you can rely of computer references you can find solutions in many circumstances.  Management, to me it's time and relationship of correcting issues, making sure you can prepare for the job efficiently so to reduce time in repairs, preventative maintenance.   Workplace culture to me  is your effort in working with others or even cooperating to make work a lot less difficult.  The hardest part of the job is when revisiting troubled problematic reassurances that repeat the same problems.  The enjoyable part of the job is resolving issues.

The typical day of work will be going to class staying with students and have peer assisted study session after class. When I am working alone, it is the time I rewrite my notes, read through textbooks and find what the key concepts is to help students study better.
The most valuable thing I have learned is to effectively communicate. To use this in my work, it becomes to offer help in different way to help student improve. For example, to observe students. Some receive knowledge better in practicing by themselves, but some only get things clear when they have seen a model problem solved step by step. To find students of different group is really a way to help me learn effectively communicate.
Every one of my co-workers has something that I could learn from. They all smart and hardworking. For example, one of my co-worker is really good at words. He made math class, which is supposed to be boring, interesting. 
The hardest part of the job is the aim of the job, that to help students with their math. Students are not good at math for a reason. It really upsets me when students did not have improvement. Also, it really make me happy when students do well improve a lot , after my help. And this makes the most enjoyable part of job. Math is what I am good at, and what could be better than that using what you are good at to help people who are not good at it yet.

Depending on the role called for, a typical day here may include suprvising exams, providing specific accomodations for students with special needs, assisting students to research, proofread and edit reports and essays, note-taking in the classroom, reviewing classroom notes, tutoring, providing adaptive software to assist students, preparing materials, administrative tasks in the office, providing information to students and instructors as well as providing emotional support to students.
Day-to-day work is varied and you need to be prepared for anything to happen. No two work days are ever the same.
Management is supportive and available, though independent thought and decision-making are encouraged, guided by protocol and office outlines.
Co-workers work together as a team;excellent support when faced by a crisis situation.
The hardest part of the job is walking in being prepared for anything that may occur that day.
The most enjoyable part of the job is working with the students and seeing them successfully and happily complete their college diploma or certificate.

I am an adjunct/sessional instructor at Mohawk. When I first began, it was a tough go but I am definitely glad I stuck with it. I love being able to share my knowledge with the next generation and hope that they can learn from my knowledge and experiences to make their path in life smoother or as smooth as possible. Over the different classes I’ve taught over the years, I’ve learned different methods for productively engaging with students from all types of diverse backgrounds. 

I’ve learned how to better connect and communicate with a generation other than my own, and I have a whole new appreciation for how to teach, encourage, and support today’s students (currently my class is composed only of Gen. Z) and I am really enjoying the opportunity.

I feel supported by the department and College, the culture is positive and supportive. I’d say the hardest part of the job is fitting all the material for the class I am currently teaching (Organizational Behaviour) in the time allotted. 

The most enjoyable part for me, is engaging with and getting to know the students and teaching a subjects I am passionate about.

Typically, instructor and I arrive half an hour ahead of class and discuss the lesson plan with the program coordinator. Lab equipment is setup, medications are organized, and the lab rooms are prepared. During the class, I assist in the answering of any questions the students may have and also help guide the students through the PharmaClik software, while the professor instructs the class. In addition to these general duties, I aid in the supervision of the class and course materials as well as the marking of assignment/tests and grade input. I find the most enjoyable part of the job is the satisfaction/rewarding feeling I receive when being able to help students achieve set academic goals, while the hardest part of the job would be managing the class time to efficiently work through the material while answering all student questions, ensuring that each pupil has an equivalent understanding of the covered material by the end of class.

I enjoy teaching students; I achieve job satisfaction when I do that because at the end of the day I feel satisfied about my students and what they have learned, and satisfied about achieving that.

Everyday I learn from the student’s questions and queries; I learn exactly what their need is and I improve my method of teaching accordingly.

The department provides everything that the faculty and students may need and keeps the right environment at all times.

My co-workers are very co operatives when I need their help and cheerful at all times.

The hardest part of the job is the time I spend in marking, it takes much time to mark and put my comments on each and every answer to let students learn from their reports.

The most enjoyable part of the job is at the end of every session when I hear it from the students that they had already learned a new task or technique that will help them perform in a right manner and with confidence at the workplace

I was so excited to get a job here, but I was given a 10 month temporary contract, with no benefits, paid sick time or guarantee of work after the fact. Everyone told me it takes about 4-6 years of temporary contracts before you get hired permanent. When my contract ended, I was first told it would be extended to cover the hiring period for the next contract. Then, less than two weeks before the end of my contract, I was told that was impossible and that I would be unemployed in less than two weeks and would have to reapply for my job as an external candidate. I did, and then was not given the job, with absolutely no explanation as to why or what I did wrong while working there. I got completely mistreated by the college and would not recommend anyone waste five years of their life to be treated with respect and dignity by their employer. Mohawk College does NOT care about its temporary or part-time staff.

Starting as a co-op position my role at Mohawk College increased to working on their partnership webpages, their intranet and, at the time, unveiling the new "X-Centre".

I learned to create a vast array of different 'themed' webpages based on whether it was the Alumni Committee to the Health & Disability sector affiliated with Mohawk College. My direct manager taught me the ins and out of coding and web-design and to create websites that were cross-platform and accessible to anyone.

The hardest part of the job was the steep learning-curve to master webpage coding but it was definitely something that I appreciated. I enjoyed the freedom to design and to express my design skills so effectively in the web-design medium.

Years later I still use those skills every day and look back to those days with fondness.
