Monk Office

Monk office is a chaotic organization with so much turnover that there is no time for institutional knowledge and connection to build. There is very little passing of information and procedure when someone leaves. That said, when you are working with someone who is independently good at what they do, it's great because they are allowed to shape their position in a way that works for them and everyone benefits. The flipside of this is that it allows for people who just want to coast along to get away with it for way too long. This applies to the senior leadership as well (especially so).

The problem is that Monk office doesn't understand the concept of staff retention and they don't consider the cost of living and the shifting labour market when determining raises. When I speak to staff here they all feel under-appreciated and underpaid for what they do. The shining stars who thrived on the autonomy they were given are quickly beaten down when senior leadership ignores their suggestions, doesn't appreciate all of the time and effort that is put in, and puts off yearly reviews as long as possible so as not to have the "salary" discussion.  Excuses and false promises are made over and over to dodge the issue.

Bottom line, if your workers' wages aren't at least increasing with inflation, they will start to look elsewhere if they have two braincells.

And therein lies the problem. Monk relies on ill-informed, downtrodden people who are willing to work for less than they are worth. If you discourage your bright and contributing staff over and over and deny them fair compensation then they will eventually leave, and all of the progress they made leaves with them. The company suffers.

I have seen this pattern play out for many years that I have worked for this company and it baffles me that the senior leadership doesn't understand why they can't keep people. 

I enjoyed my time with Monk and was with them for quite a while but the mandatory staff meetings were awful. I'd work the morning shift every time there was one, so I would be there for 8 hours and then get stuck waiting around for three more hours for the meetings to start, but lived too far to just go home and it made for way too long of a day with my commute. Typical retail pay. But we could listen to music, got decent discounts, and it was a small, local company with a handful of locations so definitely better than working at a similar chain. I liked my boss, she was really sweet and when I struggled with my health during a cancer scare, she was incredibly supportive. I still keep in touch with a few fellow monkies.

Since the new CEO came in 3 years ago there has been a lot of change but for the most part it’s great! The biggest challenge has been the new system they put in but everyone seemed to get through it together. Monk really does take care of their employees! They genuinely care. There is a lot of open and honest communication which isn’t always easy to hear but it’s better than the alternative and it’s welcomed. There is opportunity to move into different roles and try new things. It’s a busy and focused environment... we have great customers to serve! But it’s also so much fun. It’s a real team and family environment which is the best. The CEO makes it pretty clear she wants staff to be happy in what their doing and if they’re not, she’s really approachable! 

The people are kind, the location is easily accessible by car, bus or cycling. The office is dead silent, it's helpful to have headphones if you prefer working with music. 8:30 am - 4:30 pm standard office hours, but they were flexible if you want to start at 9 am. 

The work is very easy, as long as it's delivered on time. 
I enjoyed working with Senior management and cross-departments because it provided valuable practical experience. 

I felt there was a lot left to be desired with wanting more responsibilities, career growth, and incorporating strategies that aligned with company goals. There is a bit of siloing and gatekeeping. There aren't too many job opportunities on the island so working at Monk is a simple easy job that pays the bills!

This is such a great company to work for. There is so much support all around, we all feel like a family here despite the large number of employees that we have. There is not a single day that goes by that we do not hear jokes and laughter, whether that is at the Head office or in one of our retail locations.

Most importantly the management team really cares about all the employees as individuals. Our Health and Happiness is a priority and so our work life balance is wonderful. They don't just care about us but our families as well. 

I learn something new and exciting almost every day. If there is something that I need to be able to do my job better it is provided. New ideas are not just encouraged but greatly rewarded. Our commitment to being Green is top notch and everyone who works here believes in protecting our beautiful planet.

The company and upper management expect you to go above and beyond your position and will not compensate you fairly for it.

The micromanaging is suffocating. The upper management is flakey. There is no HR department so you have to trust that your store leader has your back on complaints, and chances are they don't. The decisions the company makes for daily operations is baffling to say the least. The till and other internal systems don't work but it's your fault you don't correct and catch the errors. They like to claim you have titles but never officially train you, grant you the title or compensate you for it.

It's a clique and sinking ship. Avoid.

This is by far the most horrific company I have ever had the displeasure of working for. 

Leadership styles are regressive, old-school, suffocating and toxic. No work from home options, low wages, high turnover rates and malicious gossip and rumours are rampant throughout Monk Office. Work days are spent discussing other coworkers' lives through whispers, instant messaging, and sometimes even openly so others can hear.

The work culture is not conducive to a healthy, positive work environment. Newer employees quickly find their exit strategy, whilst long-term employees stay and inevitably become a product of their leadership. 

I will never support this company.

Another basic stand on your feet for 8 hours job. A good starting, the co-workers are fantastic, management both in store and higher up leaves much to be desired from what you would expect working for a small local business. The most enjoyable part of the job is by far working with such amazing co workers, and helping customers with bigger decisions, such as furniture or larger print jobs.  You get a good basis of knowledge for both printing things such as business cards, booklets, flyers etc. and working around things like furniture and possibly the post office depending on location.

Great place to work. Leadership is effective but approachable, promoting a close knit work environment. The business is local and community focused and prioritizes eco/green initiatives. Retail locations around the island with a big head office / warehouse in Victoria. About 150 employees total. 

The company continues to grow and is very receptive to ideas about how to make it better. Although I've only worked in one area of the business, management is encouraging and supportive.

They only listen to employees that are working since many years. New employees are treated like objects. They dont even have any knowledge on how many person to hire. They would hire you 3 months ago and then lay off you . Zero management, its just for people who just want something to pay bills. 
Ceo does not realizes that they need young professionals to work if they want company to progress.  They would say we are like a family but that is just a lie. Worst experience until now.
