This was an excellent job for a student and I thoroughly enjoyed my time at this employer. The work culture is very advanced and inclusive. The downside however, was that I didn't feel like the fulltime employees made enough of an effort to include the "casual" employees in office affairs. Although I was working full-time hours I was treated like a part-time employee. I had no benefits, my salary was not on par with what it should have been after I graduated, I didn't get any sick days or vacation time unless they were unpaid and planned well in advance with my supervisor and I frequently didn't feel like I was given enough space to do my work. My supervisor liked to micro-manage and look over my shoulder while I was working, and this made me very uneasy and unable to do my best work. I also had an issue with one of the other employees that shared a work area with me and nothing was ever done to resolve this, which eventually led to me quitting the job. Great employer if you're a student at MRU though, just don't expect a career at this place.

Mount Royal's Language Tutoring position is run through Student Learning Services on campus. First a tutor would attend the training at the beginning of each semester. Then, the tutor is paired with students that need help in the subject that the tutor has requested. When the students are matched they organize a first meeting and discuss the preliminary steps of tutoring such as expectations, scheduling and goals. Then the students meet at pre scheduled times for at least 1 hour per week at a maximum of 2. Each time the tutor would sign in and conduct the session. The hardest part of the job would be working with different personality types and learning styles different from your own. To be successful at this job you must be able to adapt. The hardest part of the job can be the time commitment as well as the students' willingness to learn. If the student isn't succeeding in the course even with the tutoring it can be difficult.  Finally the reliability of the job is not really enough to constitute it as a part time position. It should be treated as a contract position.  The management team is great a lot of openness and room for feedback from students. Although, the continual changes from year to year will keep you on your toes.

Loss of staff has put a lot of pressure on the remaining staff. I would echo that Faculty are far more valued at the institution than support staff. Master degrees and above frequently guarantees job security/lack of accountability. Any extra effort will not be rewarded in any way. The union is not very strong, so don't expect any support above what HR may provide. Bullying (the discreet kind) is endemic and there is a difference in how you are treated depending on what your education is.  If you are a technical person, I would not recommend working here. High turnover and no effort to retain staff by making them feel valued or listened to. Overall, I've never worked somewhere with morale this low and it's difficult to live through. My main complaints are about the workplace culture at the Library. It is difficult to overcome even if you enjoy your work.

MRU's motto is "You Belong Here", but the follow through on demonstrating this with its employees is more "You Belong Here If You Don't Raise Questions With A Different View Point".

MRU has a very toxic culture. Directors/Managers will only make time to meet with team members they deem worthy of their time. Departments claim all members are equal, but the pecking order is clearly shown and supported. Verbal abuse of employees by those viewed as a "higher on the order" is openly accepted by leadership.

Expect poor communications and to be micro-managed. As the culture can be very clique, you need to be very careful about what you say. Should you question a manager/director's plan or show an interest in growth that they have deemed you worthy for, they will label you a problem.

I was the SCS Co-ordinator one summer (a Summer Temporary Employment Program position), and I really enjoyed learning accounts payable and procurement functions in one position. Everyone in the office was very welcoming and willing to help me learn, so I learned a LOT in my 3.5-month term! The work environment is also very informal, and colleagues are not in too much of a rush to talk to you about other things while working. I also worked only 35 hours a week, and there was no weekend work. As a Mount Royal staff member, I also part-took in 5 lunches and BBQ parties.

Mount Royal University is a wonderful place to learn and to work. work typical day was setting up and prepping your work station and clean it up and shutting it down at the end of the day. I learned that students could be pushy and demanding but not to let that ruin your day. Management for food court area at the time cared more about money then workers being happy. Hardest part of the job was dealing with picky customers who changed their order fifteen times after you finish what they wanted and then having to toss the food and start again. Most enjoyable part of the job was free soda fountain drinks and one free staff drink from starbucks or tim hortons.

As with any job, peak times become stressful, but overall, it is not a stressful place to work.

Collaborative, understanding and positive.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Working with stakeholders for the programs that I oversee, updating documents, working on contracts, and fostering relationships within the MRU community and outside.

MRU has a very toxic culture and it is very hierarchical. Every Feb-April prepare for cuts and hope your job isn't impacted. The good news is that cuts are never actual business decisions and are personality based. Usually it is the employees that speak up. A lot of people run around with titles and are experts in everything based on their title, but truthfully they know little else.The toxic culture starts at the top and flows down.MRU lacks any real processes and it is very much a juvenile organization with constant politicking and empire building.

Lots of issues with the work organisation and planning. Lack of clear focus and direction. Also in my role eespecially there was non stop rush with very little help to put it nicely. I understand they were taken over by new department and I would imagine they straightened it out easily once they had somebody actually knowing how and caring enough to do so.
