Where do I begin, 

When I was working there I noticed the company suffers from the top management right down. If you are not part of the core of friends with the top people you are nothing. I've noticed bad workers who are good friends with the foreman and lead hand advance in the company while the good workers who kept their heads down and worked their tails off that weren't good friends with the foreman because they didn't hang out with them outside of work go unnoticed and eventually laid off because of "lack of work". The company is also really cheap where they cut a bunch of corners and does the bare minimum to pass inspection bit wants to squeeze every last bit of juice from you to the point where your body eventually wears down both mentally and physically. They also did not care about your health and they prioritize getting the job done first, then safety.

I've seen and watched so many apprentices over the years and most of them were doing so many repetitive tasks for months that they had no experience in other aspects of the trade. They only knew how to do one thing and when they were asked to do something else, they had no idea where to begin. While the journeyman berates and looks down on them because they don't know. Apprentices were really set up to fail as there wasn't proper training and they were scared to ask for guidance for fear of getting called incompetent.

The benefits were okay. There was a tool allowance that I believed was $5 a week and after 6 months you get a gift card to either buy new pants or a new tool. Apprentices also got half their tuition reimbursed to them when they come back to work for NEL after they finished school. 

However, their wages were so low and management breathing down your neck everyday made it really hard to get the job done. There was also competition with your coworkers to keep your job because if you performed worse than your co worker your job could be on the line or you could move to a different site.

There was also a lot of apprentices on site and not enough journeyman to train them. And foreman's who threw the workers under the bus when the job wasn't going good when the foreman was doing the bare minimum to make it look like he was doing work.  

If you decide to work for this company, don't expect to grow your career here unless you get into their little boys club.

After all this, I've decided enough is enough and left on my own terms. Although I heard things have slightly improved after I left as they decided to raise their wages a little more and have been more open to criticism. But this is my opinion of them after working all these years there.

One of the worst companies I've ever worked for. Company is extremely greedy and doesn't care about the workers and they expect you to care about their profits. You're on site for 8.5 hours and get 1 break that is unpaid. You're worked like dogs and slaves just so the company can maximize their profits and you dont get even a penny of profit sharing from the jobs. 

Management also makes you read a book called 2 second rule on your own time. You aren't getting paid to read it and they expect you to spend your own time after your off the clock to maximize their profits. Then they have weekly meetings on discussing the book and things you have to do to maximize your efficiency so the company can swim in pool of cash.
And I was making $29/hr. 

Foreman's makes apprentices go on their knees without knee pads and do plugs for 1 year until they can do plugs with their eyes closed. Most of this job is competing with others to keep your job because if you were worse than another worker, your job could be on the line. A lot of people backstabbing each other and throwing others under the bus to get ahead and onto the favourites list. 

Work is done very poorly and to the minimum to meet code standards. Sometimes it's not even to code. Foreman tells us to make it work for the first time and after that it's the service departments problem. 

Forget learning anything here if you're an apprentice. They dont treat you like a human being and they'll get rid of you the first chance they get without giving you a notice. 

They told me to pack up my tools one day and said I was being laid off because the site is almost ending and they didnt have any other jobs for me. When I got my ROE they said I was dismissed so I couldn't claim EI. 

Truly the worst company I've ever worked for. All west, bridge, chambers are better. Their journeyman rate is garbage at $29/hr when I was there and that was the hardest $29 I've ever had to work for. The job responsibilities for a journeyman for $29 is not worth it.

The foremen, doing the bare minimum as they make it look like they are actually doing work while relentlessly criticizing employees
and telling them to work faster or else you're fired. When the employees work faster to get ahead of schedule, the foreman sends employees home because there isn't enough work to do and the workers end up losing an hour and a half pay due to the cheap foreman who only cares about money. 

When the job is going slow, foremen is constantly blaming the lack of progress on the employees working ability to the project manager, and you'll see some of your coworkers get fired, or sent to another site. 

Employees who have been there long enough, all seem to know the problem is management and the culture that is this company has promoted the real issues of favoritism leaving many good skilled workers unemployed after being poorly treated, while hiring a bunch of cheap labour (first year apprentices) and throwing them in situations where they cannot succeed and screaming at them to work faster where it's harder for them to learn how to do things correctly.
Foreman makes you do plugs on your knees for 11 months straight if you're a first year and doesn't allow you to sit on a bucket or a spool of wire because it "looks unprofessional" or "if you're in pain you'll work faster"

Rush work with very little training for apprentices. First years are forced to figure out things on their own and when they do it incorrectly, journeyman are screaming and berating them because they don't know how to do it.

You get one break per day and it's unpaid. They don't pay OT and force you to work more than 8 hours a day for straight time pay and they don't care about your health. 

If you're going to work for this company and work for their low wages, do not pour your heart, blood, sweat and tears to this company as they do not appreciate any of your hard work. When layoff time comes, you'll be gone. Every 6 months they try to find ways to reduce what little benefits they offer.

Solid company to work for. Wages are good, not the best or worst in the industry. I watched the company change over the course of 10 years, it's changing with the times. Nightingale does everything to the letter of the labour law now, that is a company wide policy. In the last 3-4 years, there has been an extremely strong push on worker safety. You are provide with all safety gear right out of the gate. Decent benefits package after probation.

Basically, if you show up and work hard every day, not only will you always have work, but you'll have an opportunity to advance. Nightingale promotes people that preform. 

A typical day starts at 7 AM with a short huddle, breaks for a lunch (30 min) at 10:30, and then completes at 3:30. Workers are driven to preform and usually checked on and led by other workers. Strong team mentality and group achievement recognition encouraged. Not all foreman and leaders are created equal. 

The worst part of the job is when you can't get the help that you need, or when it's crunch time and everyone is stressed out and short tempered. The best part about working for Nightingale is you get a chance to do things earlier than you might think based on your experience. You really get to learn on the job. If you have an idea to improve the process, it's encouraged and recognized. New ideas are currently being pushed and shared throughout the company. 

The culture is different at each site, but generally, its team focused and positive, even in stress times. The foreman on each job drives the culture of that crew. It's like anything else, a team or group. Most sites have a pizza day once every month or two for the crew. Sometimes get to go home early on Friday's, if we achieved our work goal for the week, passed inspection etc.

-7am start work with meeting with foreman whom will give you a workload for the day; by 11am quick lunch break, discuss task progress with foreman. 11:30 until 3:30/3pm, complete assignment or if finished, take the initiative to complete another task.
 
-Most Foreman are very helpful in that if you have any questions, ask them and they will take you through it step by step until you get it right; especially before you start a task.

-upper management focuses on timetables and quality results with an almost Darwinism outlook on performance. If you sit back in the shadows and not take initiative to perform tasks or do a horrible installation job or take the initiative to fixes others mistakes, they may add you to the list of next lay-off’s when projects die down with little money to pay their workforce. Yet if you show you will jump through any hoop to get the task done and be the first in line with a predatory attitude whilst still maintaining team spirit, then that is your ticket to job security within the company.

-work environment is more team-like than you think with an emphasis of helping co-workers when they need it and working as a cohesive unit.

-Hardest part of the job will be the work, which is also the most enjoyable part next to making lifelong friends with your co-workers.

I have and will continue to recommend Nightingale as a great place to work. Nightingale delivers a unique opportunity to further your knowledge in the electrical field and is a company that promotes its employees from within before filling a position from an outside party. The management team acknowledges and rewards those employees who show personal interest and growth in their work. Through my years as a nightingale employee i have never had my education stumped and can say that i experienced a well rounded out apprenticeship and an even greater opportunities as a Journeyman. Nightingale not only payed for 50% of my tuition for every level of electrical training i completed they have paid 100% of all my extra courses to further advance my career with in the company. I have always had a positive sense of community with my co workers, these relationships that have been built through the numerous projects we have accomplished, and outside of work events such as the Christmas parties, golf tournaments, Rugby 7s, playland, paintball, go-karting, and the various on site employee lunches. Overall Nightingale is a great place to work and an especially great place for those who are looking for a sense of accomplishment, to further their knowledge and careers and a great community.

If you are self-motivated and show potential  you are sure to make it far. This is a great place for those eager to learn and progress into more senior roles. 

It's a large company so keep in mind there are many sites, run by different foremen, and each individual's experience will vary based on the crew they are working with at the time, but overall, as an organization, the common themes are: work hard, have a positive attitude and show potential = more pay and more responsibilities, even if you are just a first year apprentice. 
Poor attitude & attendance = first on the lay off list (and probably someone writing a negative review).

It's one of the few companies that if you attend a company event (pre-covid holiday party, golf tournament, paintball, etc) you can easily chat with the President of the company, joke around, and if you have been proving yourself on site, he'll even know your name (maybe not your face, but your name;)

Overall, great place to work, highly recommended. 


Good environment, lots of friends, lots of team building activities.
Favorites were always the Christmas Parties and Golf Tournaments.

I started as a first year apprentice, and worked up to site foreman.

I had a well rounded apprenticeship in various scopes of the job, including slab, suite rough in, finishing and fire alarm. 

As I became a higher term apprentice I was given more and more responsibility, leading a small crew of apprentices.

The crew I worked with became close life long friends, and we still talk regularly.

When I became a foreman I was given enough support from management to succeed. I cared about the safety and well being of my guys.

Some aspects of residential concrete construction are tedious, but they have to be done, and its the best way to prove you deserve better assignments.

I left NEL last year back when my wife was transferred out of town.
If that had not been the case, I could see myself working there for the rest of my life.

LOW MORALE. I was warned about this company before I got there. I chose to give it a shot anyway. If you are considering working here, explore other options. Half the people I worked with were miserable, unhelpful, unproductive, unprofessional. Management was constantly rushing. I was brand new to the trade and oftentimes wasn’t getting clear instructions on how to complete tasks I was given. Safety was not a priority. One time, I was told to handle insulation and my foreman wouldn’t give me a few minutes to go grab a mask.  I did it without. When I asked questions, I would sometimes be given the cold shoulder by my coworkers and not even get any answers. Quite a few staff conducted themselves without any sort of tact. They took no pride in the work they did. Non-existent work ethic. No enthusiasm. No motivation. No drive. Disorganized. This company is pathetic. I don’t even know how they are still in business. We will see how long it lasts. It’s just SHAMEFUL. 

This place is okay to work at.  Pay is okay but you could get paid more elsewhere.  HR works for the offic3 and is not on your side so dont bother complaining. Management wants you to constantly come up with new ideas every week as part of a lean program.  They make you feel like you arent doing a good job unless you are contributing.  There are bonuses for Foreman but no incentive for most workers to do better.   Employees dont speak up because they would just be layed off or put on a black list.  Ask for money and you are treated like you are stealing from the company.  Get more money and they will work you to the bone.   Push too hard and the good people will leave.   So if you need a job for now it will be steady. If management is looking at this employees dont want to do your lean meetings. 90 percent just play along. Some culture you are creating.
