Shalom Manor

My typical day looks something like this; I come to Shalom and print off calendars. Then I feed two residents breakfast. I plan and facilitate a program, assist with coffee time, plan and implement another program, take a half hour break, offer another program, chart and pick up supplies at local stores if needed for the next day. 

Through this work experience, I learned how to multi-task. I also developed social and emotional skills. I learned different techniques about facilitating and planning activities. 

Management is excellent and very understanding. They have great communication with staff.

The culture of the home is mainly the Dutch heritage.

The hardest part of the job is offering programs that all the individuals with diverse cognitive skills can participate equally in.

The most enjoyable part of the job is the gratitude received from the residents and the relationships I am privileged to make with them

Great place to work. You work with wonderful colleagues and management is for the most part very good! The best part is the lovely residents  whom you are able to develop great relationships with. The most challenging part of the job is dealing with difficult and abusive families. It really cuts into time that staff are able to spend working with residents and brings unbearable and unnecessary stress to the job. Home is clean and tidy. Overall pleasant atmosphere for everyone. Shalom also has great financial and volunteer support from the local church communities and it makes such a difference. The pay is very poor compared to other homes. Management always receives yearly pay increases but will fight the union for the smallest wage increase for its working class staff. 

I was literally fired from Shalom Gardens for doing my job too well I know this may sound unbelievable but it is the truth. I was told on several occasions to stop going above and beyond with residents because they will come to expect it and then my coworkers would also have to do it. Honestly, I wish I had taken recordings of several conversations I had with particular coworkers, Just so I would have the proof. Absolutely shocked at the amount of jealousy and entitlement that I was subjected to, before I was let go, I picked up seven extra shifts and completed them all that’s when they let me go. 
I am now with another company that has the same work ethic that l do and are 100% supportive . 

The job of RPN has become more challenging, as the amount of paperwork is increasing. I start my day, with report, then visit any very ill residents, Then the next 2 hours are spent doing my med'n pass.  I try to complete my treatments before 1130, but depending on how many times we, as staff are interuppted, we like to be outdoors to start the new shed.  'we spend time with any family who have questions or concerns., It is hard to squeeze some time in to talk one on one with the people we are for.  My co-workers are supportive, pleasant a joy to work with.

The worst job experience of my life. I was hired as part time permanent, but didnt receive my line for 2 and a half months and had to work casual until then on 5 different units. PSWs have to lead prayers and read bible verses before every meal as the residents expect it because it's highly religious. The religious element leads to a suffocating work environment with ludicrous rules and regimentation. I was once lectured for saying "oh my God", because I said the Lords name in vain. 

Clean, pleasant Dutch atmosphere. Great staff and management and most of all great residents.

A typical day includes feeding residents, bathing, toileting, charting, assisting nurse as needed and attending to resident's personal needs.

Management is supportive but it's extremely fast paced with little time to spend with each resident. 3 PSW staff, 28 residents.

PSW coworkers work great as a team.

I absolutely loved working here. However, due to my own insecurities, I was dismissed. Would highly recommend this place to anyone interested in pursuing a career surrounded by friendly and inviting coworkers. Everyone there treated me well for the most part. It is my fault for my career ending so abruptly. If only I had had the confidence to share some important information. Co staff/management are the best ever and the only thing that tops them are the residents themselves.

I was nervous to venture out into a new job experience. I was pleasantly surprised at the ease in which I have been accepted as a new staff at Shalom. The nurses are ready and willing to help, the PSW's are great and management is very understanding.
The only downside is the wages are less than what I expected to start at as an RPN, but the wage increases offer incentive to stick around, and are also higher than other private homes in the area.

As far as Long Term care homes are concerned, Shalom Manor is a great place to work for. However, like most LTC homes managment does not understand what is needed to keep employees content. Management nickels and dimes when is comes to wages and is hard to deal with when it comes to vacation and time off.

I have been at shalom manors now for a bit over 6 yearsI very much enjoy working there, my co workers are amazing and we all strive to provide our residents with the best of care possible.
I, however, need to make a switch to working days instead of straight nights and shalom unfortunately cannot provide such hours at this time.
