They overhire because they expect to immediately fire approximately 25% of their new hires. Training is absolutely minimal for new employees, but if you don't do something the way they want you to, you get in trouble for it. The managers tell you to do everything you can for a customer (they call them "guests") but then reprimand you for spending too much time with one customer. The uniform is NOT provided for free, it is deducted from your paycheck at $50 increments. Supervisors are expected to work 50-60 hours a week, and are looked down on by upper management if they go home on time instead of staying late, or coming in early. The quality of the plant product that's brought in is shockingly bad, and a huge amount of it comes in diseased or infested with insects, but goes out on the sales floor anyway, and the staff is reprimanded if it isn't dealt with once it's in the store. The pond has been leaking into the foundation of the building for over a year and it hasn't been fixed. Employees that are doing their jobs well are struggling to keep up, while other employees stand around on their phones. Ideas and suggestions are shot down, and pressing issues (such as supplier quality and issues with store barcodes) are brushed aside. These people don't care about their employees, they just want to make a quick buck. 

   It was beautiful working at Sheridan during the summer. But as a Guest Server it felt like you are expected to be in 8 different places at the same time.  In a typical day you could be getting called to assist other departments, getting called to do bulk, juggling your opening or closing duties, taking on janitorial duties, sanitizing the store, cleaning the ponds, working in nursery and directing traffic in the parking lots, all within the span of an hour. There is consequences If you are unable to complete your duties even if it's a very busy day. Management lacks empathy. If you are on break you are expected to stop what you are doing and go back to work if a guest or coworker needs help. The only department that does this within the store. 

It can be a toxic workplace environment at times. 3 different managers that lack communication and employees that gossip more than they work.

You are stretched thin and if you speak to management about it they threaten to drop your pay if you can't handle the duties. They do not communicate with staff and instead lay off employees with little notice. There is a huge turnover at the Etobicoke location. Either pay your workers more or hire another set of hands. 

Short staffed, high turnover rate, lots of managers that are extremely unorganized. They sign you up through an employment service probably to avoid legal issues. Almost had to wait another month to start working and even when the season rolled around I was not put on any projects they hired me for. They expect you to learn hours of training manuals that you are not paid for and provide inadequate training on site. You must pay $115 for your uniform out of your paycheck, whether used and old. You are expected to do everything and anything, on top of that being a salesperson selling multiple overpriced products, even if you’re not hired as a sales associate. They will exploit you (especially if you’re disabled), work overtime, holidays with low wage and no commission. I have provided free service to customers on behalf of my labour. Unpaid breaks and lunch, that sometimes you’ll miss because it’s so busy and the supervisor forgets. Working with temperamental people that expect you to be super happy while they have you on a leash. You will be blamed for small things and they will decide to fire you without any warning if they just don’t like you. I have heard horror stories about former employees leaving and honestly they don’t want you to succeed here. They do not care about you. Would not recommend anybody working here, as much as I loved working with plants and customers. 

Used to be a happy, fun work environment, but new management see everyone as a number and have little respect for experience and qualifications. Bears little relationship, any more to the horticulture industry.
Sheridan sits strong with me since my childhood, back in the day it was a strong team atmosphere and a fun place to work but has become  nothing more than a financial venture under the new management. if you are a passionate about your work like me, this is definitely a very bad career option. Motivation techniques, at best, if you make $10 this week we want to see $20 next week and so on.
A toxic atmosphere exists within certain areas where supervisors are ring leaders, therefore have freedom to rule as they wish; favoritism is across the board, making it very difficult for anyone not in the clique to succeed and for what you are paid here it is definitely not worth the effort when other industry competitors pay much better and offer far superior benefit packages and offer a much more modern work place.
Buildings and offices are stuck in the 80's and bathroom facilities are primitive to say-the-least!
Unfortunately, Sheridan has lost it's glow and is very definitely not the main player it used to be in the industry; there are far better options out there.

The place is full of manipulation and people you can’t trust. The managers speak poorly to their employees and speak badly about other managers in front of employees. They promised me flexibility, and help with my mental health, but neither were provided. I was tossed around, spoken disrespectfully about behind my back and too my face. Absolutely one of the worst places I’ve ever worked at, and the only way for you to succeed there or even get promotions, is by giving quite literally your entire life, time, and energy. They have you work intense laborious hours, with no extra pay, minimum wage if you’re lucky. You have no time for your family or social life at all. They work you like a dog, and treat you worse than a dog. Nothing is ever done, and the management never takes responsibility, they blame the employee, even when it was the managers mistake. If you want to be stressed, and pulling your hair out, and being disrespected on a regular basis, then this is the place for you. The main motto they’re from employees who have worked there for years, and the ones who are newly hired. “This place is going to burn, and eventually will have no business” if staff can speak that way about a company, it’s not worth even starting there.

Company does not compensate employees enough for the condition they are required to work in. Understandably, you are subject to extreme weather conditions as it is a garden centre, but minimum wage to be at risk of heatstroke in the summer and frostbite in the winter? No thanks.

The company is divided into different departments with individual supervisors for each. I have no complaints about the cash team, wonderful people (most of them). Good work/life balance and quite accommodating, however you’re hired as part-time with full time hours so they can avoid giving you benefits.

The company culture on a whole however is quite discriminatory which is reflected in their hiring practices, as well as in some of the clientele that frequent the store. Employees regularly gossip negatively about each other and spread rumours, and management actively participates in the gossip as well.

someone once told me that there is no such thing as a stupid question.  At Sheridan, the only questions I am ever asked are stupid questions.  For example, "how much does this plant cost."  I would like to respond, "I don't have time for this, I am currently balancing a heavy wooden skid on my head.  Why don't you just read the price tag."  But I instead say, "This plant costs $X.99.  And we also have a 25% sale on dahlia's.  How else may I help you?"

Despite the minor inconveniences, the people whom I worked with at Sheridan are sweet hearts.  Funny, charming, and super cool.  I wish I could take them with me to my next job.

I'm giving this employer 5 stars as its the most honest job I've applied and worked for. I was told up front what the work was going be like and how long the days were typically going to be. Don't sign up for this job if you can't handle long and grueling days. Most of the work day consists of repeated lifting over and over again with the occasional break, light duties include building wooden skids and watering the plants. I had a lot of fun here and worked with many good people but would not look to this as a long term career. You'll be paid hourly but don't expect Overtime as this job is covered under the farm employers act, as such they do not have to pay overtime, regardless your pay cheque will still be healthy due to the sheer amount of hours you'll be working. Once the season picks up you can expect pretty consistent 9-12 hour days. 

I worked at Sheridan for two months on a contract basis, aware of the fact that my contract was only two months long and could be extended or not at the end of that period. While all of my colleagues were informed of whether they were being extended or being let go, Sheridan failed to inform me of anything. Instead, despite having asked for more hours, management slowly cut my hours down without any information, not telling me that I was being let go. Then they stopped scheduling me altogether for several weeks. Seeing as I was unsure of if I still had a job there, I tendered my resignation to Sheridan, stating that they had never informed me about the status of my contract going forward. Even to this day, they have removed me from all of the work platforms but have failed to respond to my email.

Great people at store level with good team spirit. Store management great.  Possibilities for improvement are great but corporate seems disconnected from employees.  No proper pay for great team players as retention does not appear important.  Profit is all the corporation seems to focus on and have no idea of working conditions that are poor and stressful. 
Wasteful company with lots of room for improvement on work flow(really old paper flow systems), proper training(next to none existed), environmental considerations (waste is huge and no recycling) and opportunity for improvement is huge if they chose to focus on people and environment rather than sales figures.  All important.  
I liked working there but the pay is not a fair wage and seasonal which they use an excuse to not pay people properly.
