Sherwood Honda

Easy-going atmosphere but you must beware of the few family dynamics that go on here. All upper-level management (including ownership) is related to each other and most of the finance department is also related to each other. You can tell they prioritize “family values” in the workplace, and it's heavily emphasized in the interview. However, it means going way above and beyond...even on a minimum wage job that won't propel your career unless you plan on being a receptionist for the rest of your life. This includes coming in early UNPAID.

When you get hired, there are many promises of raises and bonuses, but they're rarer than they actually claim to be. For example, they claimed that part-time employees would get benefits multiple times during the interview and training, but they will not disclose that you have to work a minimum of 25 hrs/week. I'm not sure why they brought benefits to me in the first place when the role is only around 15-20 hours per week. 

The job itself is straightforward and quite relaxing, especially if the dealership is not busy. Coworkers are friendly, and you can have some time to yourself. However, if you are a young woman, you can expect to receive some lewd comments from select customers. I've complained a couple times but since you are on your own at the front desk, you're expected to just shrug it off.

If you get sick or need to request time off, good luck! There’s minimal coverage for the front desk, and they will not be happy if you call in.

Communication from management is not the greatest, as you don't get much face-to-face time with supervisors and personally, I've never been called for a meeting or evaluation from the manager. In fact, I don’t think we’ve even had a conversation aside from the initial interview and when he requests tasks. Therefore, any feedback that should be communicated won’t get to you until it has “happened a few times.” On top of that, the technology is slow and old (took them months to replace a $40 hard drive). It's also cheap, so it can be pretty clunky to use, especially if you're trying to pull up customer info quickly. 

All in all, it's just an okay option for students, especially if you live in Sherwood Park. However, there are better part-time options for similar (or even better) pay. Pay is on the lower end for receptionists in the automotive industry in Edmonton. Sherwood Honda pays minimum wage, but other competitors I interviewed paid $17-$20. I accepted the offer here because it was far easier to commute to by a wide margin, and they claimed that the amount would increase after probation. .


Sherwood Honda was one of the least enjoyable places to work.

The General Managers are quick to blame employees for everything that goes wrong.  They make many empty promises for job promotions and opportunities for growth.

The pay is minimum wage with commission.  Work-life balance is completely heavy for time spent at work and very little at home because management pressures employees to spend more time at work.

They often say "if you are not here in the dealership to close a deal with a client, your coworker will either get half/all of your commission for the sale."  Staff/sales reps often feel pressured to work from 9am-9pm, 7 days a week.  Sundays (10am-7pm).

Management frowns upon staff for taking breaks to eat.  Many staff feel pressured to eat quickly, and unhealthy foods (chips, candy, granola bars, vending machine snacks) so that they can quickly put their food away to look after customers.  Any sales staff who take food breaks out of their office are often harassed by management.

Side duties (checking vehicles in the lot, shoveling snow, setting up merchandise, decorating, posting marketing promotional materials) were often not evenly distributed.  Management had favorite staff members who never had to perform any side duties.  Staff members who were not considered management's favorites, had to perform all the extra side duties.  If the side duties were not completed or not done to management's liking, the staff would be punished by having to stay late for closing shifts.  

I would never recommend anyone to work  here.  I would never work here again.

The management of the detailing department and the servicing department expect you to give perfect results with sub-par working conditions. My experience was good until the management kept trying to add more workers than what we needed. We didn’t  have enough detailing bays and I would be forced to work in a bay where other detailers were simultaneously washing cars. When I asked for my own space to work in, I was declined by both of my managers who told me to utilize the space available. The dealership’s output of cars isn’t even enough to have the need for so many detailers, so overall there was a lack in communication between managers and workers. Managers also didn’t understand the value of quality work and how it’s achievable.  The other employees are very nice and the culture is friendly. It’s a good place to work as a stepping stone until you can find a workplace which is managed well.

Fast paced or super slow, either way you're having fun. The sales staff are hilarious... easy to feel like part of the family right away. The culture here is great. It's friendly competition but more like a team effort. Managers are there to HELP you every minute of everyday. 

The best part of the job is the rush of success when you have worked hard for a customer's business. 

The hardest part of the job is the amount of walking/jogging you do when its busy. But what's a few calories lost? 

You learn a lot about yourself here at Sherwood Honda. As long as you are self reflective and reflexive, you will be successful. It's a fun place to be.

You get what you put in. Management can be hard at times but it's their passion. If you put in the work you will do well and be rewarded. Management can be patient especially if they see something in you. Finding your niche and what works for you will contribute to your success here. They are very laid back and easy to talk to. They have worked hard to change the culture here and have hired some great people. The sales team is competitive but in a fun way and we work as a team. If someone needs help there is always someone willing to help.

Coworkers are generally friendly and management is flexible with hours/getting time off as needed. 

Flat-rate position means you can make some money if the bay is busy, but you need to work very hard to do so. No opportunity for advancement within the detail department.

Decent job for someone with little experience/options. 

Good job for a young person that works hard.

Great job for nobody.

over all great place to start an automotive career, gained a lot of experience and given room to grow. may be difficult working as a journeyman as favouritism is rampant and those who are favoured are passed on the "gravy jobs". overall my favourite part about the job is learning new tech and being able to advance my skill sets. unfortunately honda isn't what it used to be and their product line is beginning to slide, and warranty times don't pay well! so hours are hard to come by.

There is no typical day at work, every customer is different, every problem unique and every solution different from the last. What I learned is great communication skills and how to adapt to change quickly. The management is great, experienced, tenured and capable. The workplace culture is friendly and promotes teamwork. The hardest part of the job is the accountability for your own success. The most enjoyable part of the job is the accountability for your own success.

Sherwood Honda has employed me for over 5 years and I couldn’t be happier. It is a busy dealership in Sherwood Park which is great when working in the automotive industry. Management and all of the staff here are great which makes working here even better. I would highly recommend Sherwood Honda as a work place, or at a minimum the place to purchase your next vehicle!

Sherwood Honda is a fast paced work environment where you have to think quick on your feet. There is a lot to learn in a short amount of time. There is room for growth but management has high expectations. As long as you're willing to put in the work, you will be rewarded. If you like working long hours, this is a good place to work.
