When I was initially hired on, I asked to work full time hours. I had to request for more hours multiple times before I was granted them, but then I was working about 50+ hours/week which was fine, except I would be one of three barbers on the floor and had to cover the majority of clients who came in. Aside from myself, there was typically at least one of the managers on site but the majority of the time they would only stay for a couple hours but almost never stayed until after 4:00-5:00PM when we were busiest. 
While I had prior experience as a barber, any time I would ask for tips and guidance for haircuts I was not as familiar with, the staff offered me zero help and told me "I could do it myself just fine", which at times resulted in unhappy clients and caused me additional stress. 
I have a disability, which I made clear upon being hired, and they were not accommodating at all. When I had a particularly bad medical episode, they offered no assistance nor compensation and it resulted in me losing my job. 

A typical day at work
Most days involved constant micromanagement from management and some long-term staff, which made it hard to focus on clients or work independently.

What I learned
I mainly learned how to cope with a stressful and unpredictable environment rather than improving my barbering skills.

Management
Management often ignored concerns, showed favoritism toward long-term employees, and made decisions—like firing staff—without giving clear reasons or evidence.

Workplace culture
High turnover created a tense atmosphere. Drama between staff was common and raising issues often led to more conflict instead of solutions.

The hardest part of the job
Feeling like job security could disappear at any time and trying to build a client base in that environment.

The most enjoyable part of the job
The only positive was gaining more hands-on cutting experience from steady walk-in traffic.


There is no stability with hours. I have been emplyed since the store opened in 2014 and have seen 2 assistant managers and we are currently on manager #5 and assistant manage #3 and turn over upon turnover in staff. 
Sexism  has been a personal issue for myself( unable to wear make up and had to provide a Dr note to avoid being punished for not wearing any)
Pattern of poor management develops with each management change
Hardest part of the day is having favoured employees come and go as they please,not contribute to salon cleaning duties, call in sick and not having to provide coverage)
The most enjoyable is being busy for a full day with clients and perform salon duties as required.The hands on work and keeping busy is a must .
Lack of understanding and cooperation with the Employment Standard act (lunch breaks)
Corporate Policies and Expectations seem threatening and unattainable.

Bad management in my experience, supposed to have a set day off but that is rarely the case unless you are a manager. Very high employee turnover, which often leaves the staff short-handed. Fast-paced environment, you will develop your skills very quickly but you will live off of tips. The owner of the business is an incredibly kind, caring man, and really cares about his employees, but the managers leave much to be desired and there is definitely an "in-crowd." You get a specific amount of time to do a haircut in, and are expected to churn them out like an assembly line. 

I really enjoyed my time with Sport Clips the environment was friendly and welcoming! I felt supported as a stylist by my manager and the owners. I received training when I started, which helped me understand how to perform the services well and confidently.  I started as an assistant manager and later advanced to the management role. I had the opportunity to travel to Las Vegas and other destinations for a company-wide educational conference with really exciting events and celebrations! I even competed in the National Look contest, placing 3rd overall in Canada and the US, it was an incredible experience. I am very grateful for my time with Sport Clips!  

Sportclipss is an excellent place to learn through the basics. They have lots of training courses (when they remember or have the staff to send you to it).

There is usually a great group of people that works there but it can get caddy quickly and often the management team can not keep up with it and it becomes toxic fast.
The CEO is aware of a few of the issues and does not care and has actually hired back staff after being aware of multiple labor bored complaints.

They cycle through management and have a high turn over rate and it's often a complain of clients

There is ways to grow in the company so you do not get stagnant which is nice.

Sport clips has a very unique take on mens hair and the signature service is second to 
None, whereby (anyone) who enjoys cutting men and childrens hair can with ease fullfill a satisfying hair experince for the client.
 If they follow the 3 point play effectivley and efficantly. 
It was my disire to be a couch as I have extensive experince teaching and training young professionals in my past with obsco beauty supply/origionails canada. As well as my own salon psycology course. I would be an asset to their company. 

I worked at the Vernon SportClips for over 6 months. Although I enjoyed working there and appreciated the atmosphere and pay, it was not worth the stress and drama caused by the manager and long term staff members. The owner of the business is a respectable man who tries his best but unfortunately is unaware of the problems happening between the staff. The manager was ignorant and not open to change or critique about personal communications. The communication was very poor and toxic. I was pushed to my limits after multiple times of trying to talk to the manager, staff members and the owner and nothing changed. 

What is the best part of working at the company?
Barbering, practicing what I love to do


What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Working in multiple locations, or just being bounced around when I first started. Wasn't well organised.


What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
The work environment is based on a sports atmosphere, there is no music just sports on the t.v. which is ultimately why I left, that and uniform attire. Which made me feel like I worked at superstore.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Slow most days, it was hard to make money.
