Urban Fare is just a fancy Save-On Foods without the extra benefits.

working here over the course of 1 year 6 months, I learnt what Urban Fare is all about.

The Customer Base At Urban Fare Totally Sucks, mostly grumpy old folks that come in every day, Fabricate a bad experience and then take that issue to upper management.

Upper Management (Store Manager/Assistant manager/Department Supervisor) are out of touch with their employees.

Some Issues I noticed while being most senior in my department:

Excessive Turnover, this is due to not enough training time/ no designated person to train new staff.
this caused unnecessary unease within the workplace climate.

Longtime Staff leaving because there was no opportunity to progress with the career, many turned to finding other work due to a "Glass Ceiling" feel to the job.

Multiple Occasions of Workplace Harassment with Management doing nothing to fix the problems.

Constantly/ Purposely Understaffed departments all across the store.

No Discount/Free Meals or anything of that sort 


In Close, My supervisor and others were always going the extra mile to give us a hand when we needed it but management wasn't willing to ever try to fix the clear issues that plagues Urban Fare.

I have worked at Urban fare now for a  little over a year and a half. I enjoy the environment of the building and the people i work with. I consider it a great environment for young adults to get their feet wet when entering the workforce, because there are so many area's for them to get experience in and so many fantastic people willing to teach them; if they are willing to actually work/learn. Management is fare, and treats you how you treat them. If you respect your job by showing up on time, in the proper clothing and actually behave like you want to be in the building doing your job, they reward you with patience, guidance, understanding and help. If you show up late, call in sick every other day and never lift a finger to do anything but the minimum, you are going to get the exact opposite. Every person working at Urban Fare are busy people,  and don't have time to fool around with lazy workers. 
Over all, it is a good place to work. It is a grocery store. You will be serving the public, and customer service is of the highest priority at Urban Fare.

Urban Fare was not bad, there were times when I really enjoyed working there, mostly to do with friendly coworkers and working in certain areas of the store. I struggled to keep up with the pace of the restaurant, I often did not put my best effort into orders because I was constantly rushed and urged to go faster. It's worst in the bust summer months. Management was iffy, some were nice, but often I felt that the managers could do better. Also, there are no employee discounts. In the orientation, we were allowed to sign up for a More Rewards card, and that was it, which was :/. The turnover rate is very high in the cappuccino bar part of the restaurant, as there are a lot of young workers there. But there is more to Urban Fare than the restaurant, there are many departments I was not exposed to during my time there. 

Mostly love working with co-workers. Environment is good. Convenience to work is good as well as it is close to the skytrain. Customers were 50/50 some of them were really nice while others have attitudes (what do you except on a low income service job anyway). Worst management and the worst union to work for!!! Communication is utterly preposterous between management/bosses and staffs!!!... Imagine a basic necessity such as a faucet took nearly a year just to get fixed and was promised to send 2 men to repair the next day at the time when it was broken and didn't happened at all and no one said a thing to the staffs. Management even failed to appreciate hardwork, but notices all your mistake. What a joke! [P.S. Best decision in my life was to file that resignation letter! Money will never be an issue, but if management lacks respect, humility and fairness then bye!]

day= open your department by yourself, includes heavy lifting, handling food, handling karens.

hardest part of the job= doing everything by yourself
enjoyable part= working in a fridge.

Not only do they overprice everything, (no seriously they do. They even double the price from save-on products they get, although they are a save-on company, they even charge workers these increased prices. You only get 10% off) the only reason they're so desperate for employees is because they fire them after 4 months with zero warning. 

How they get away with this? They put it in the union contract that you must have 500 hours or 6 months working there in order to get past probation. 

They also won't give you hours worth jack after 2 weeks. Save on your troubles, and don't apply there. Only people that'll suffer is the big bosses that deserve to. 

Daily tasks depend on which department you work in. Unlike other stores, cross-department training is more common here. (at this location, False Creek). If you have the passion or desire for more than just a pay-my-bills job, it is attainable, but you have to show it. Transfers and internal job postings are frequent. Some based on time within company, some based on credentials and competency. Management is generally good, there is a rotation every 5 years of each manager, this can be great or horrible. Also, there is frequent rotation of staff, unfortunately after a while, the people you come to enjoy working with slowly leave. If you get hired with the right people, there is a lot of fun to be had. The job isn't hard, unless you aren't competent with basic work. The most enjoyable part is the freedom the management gives you, as well as the people.

Constantly understaffed, turnover is very high, management is out of touch and unorganized, they are not very respectful of employees, although good benefit package you are in a union that takes money off your paycheques and the only benefits is health care, you make minimum wage, no discount, you deal with mean costumers almost all of the time, you are always working the job of 2 people because someone is sick or quit. Management hawks over your shoulder and tries to find anything to get mad about whether it’s ankles showing, getting a refill on coffee (which costumers are allowed but not workers), having water hidden on a shelf , god forbid... people who have been with the company for years still make minimum wage. The management has heard about these problems various times from multiple employees but do not seem to care. Save yourself a headache and do not even apply.

I worked at the Kelowna location as a cashier for 6months, and it was the worst job I've had. The management is constantly micromanaging you over the littlest things, they will butt kiss rude and disrespectful customers and schedule you way more hours than you want. They were constantly under staffed due to people calling in sick of quitting without notice. The coworkers were the only good thing about this job, we all bonded over the hate of our managers. Managers were unorganized, disrespectful and looked for any little thing to get mad at you. In my first two months at this job there were about 6people who quit in my department. Customers can be very rude and impatient. I would not recommend this place to my worst enemy, the lack of respect people go from customers and management is not worth it. 

This was a wonderful place to work! I would go back in a heart-beat no questions asked! The team was very supportive and very helpful! Everyone was accepted for who they are, and what they look like, with open arms even with ho professional this company is. There was many opportunities to help out in different department in the store. Lots of bonuses! The hardest part of the job for me was remembering all the different fruit and vegetable codes; as there were man of the similar fruits but imported from all over the world.
All staff members where treated fairly and equally regardless of your position in the store. I found everything about being at Urban Fare enjoyable.

I learned much about foods internationally with over 100 different products to relay to customers and nutritional facts about local products of almost 30 products.

The co-workers I work with are very friendly, some I have become friends since I started working there. I have made many friends outside of the country through working here as well.

I would say the hardest part of this job would be trying to serve the customers as best as I could while juggling about 3-4 other duties.

The most enjoyable part of this job is that we get to sample new products to relay our experience to our customers. We also have the choice of pairing certain foods when we sample them to customers to enhance our ability to upsale products.
