USL can be a great place to work, and some people are truly amazing. 10/10 for all work events and Thursdays breakfasts. Stick with the recipe and you'll be fine. Stray and you'll be frozen out. Work/life balance is really only for co-ops or interns. Accomodations are for those with the "in", so make sure to get in with the big guns. 

The idea of being in charge of your own work is great in theory, it is not as easy as it may sound. Sometimes you'll have too much work, and sometimes not enough. Make a mistake on a project and you might never get a chance to work with the lead again (and you may never hear about what you did wrong.) Your coach may provide some feedback, but it's never clear. Clear and constructive feedback is not really a thing, you'll never know why you were shown the door. 

Also, compassion is not really a thing at this company. Feeling ill all the time? Not feeling up to conversing? Mental illness making it hard to stay connected? Long COVID? Good luck, and maybe if they like you enough they'll let you keep your job. 

If the company values resonate with you, you will do very well here. Freedom and accountability is one of them, you are free to choose which kind of projects you want to work on, how you grow, which clients to focus on. You are expected to deliver on your promises, so communication is key. Most of the tricky situations that I have seen came from a lack of communication. So be clear, set boundaries and they will be respected.
The main reason that I like working here is people and the culture that they uphold, the second is the variety of projects that you get to work on and being able to choose your own career path. 
The approach to compensation is fair and open, you can ask any questions and the branch leadership people will go over it with you in great detail.
Work-life balance is present as long as you are communicating your schedule and meeting expectations. 

A typical day at Urban Systems would include working with clients from various First Nations communities, the type of work is dependent on the project. I learned what an office job is about and how great it is to work in a team environment. The management ties in closely with the workplace culture as many people there are leaders and are able to have fun but also keep the team on task. The hardest part of the job is seeing a community not being able to come together for the betterment of the community. The most enjoyable part of the job was being able to see the positive effects that take place on the community after a job is completed and seeing the community thrive.

During my time there in early 2021, I found this company's work culture to revere stress as a sign of commitment and ambition. This could be toxic, as I found a few people to be acting more busy or stressed than they really needed to to effectively get their job done, in my opinion. They came across as cold and even harsh or snappy in some instances. This work culture as I experienced it did not value warmth, kindness, forgiveness, and inclusion the way I wished it did. Not all people, though, displayed these behaviors. Some departments seemed to have a welcoming culture that also valued the person behind the achievement. Unfortunately, the department I was in did not.

I gained experience with credit. I've been doing receptionist for a while, but wasn't getting paid for it. I did it at Alta Tv. At Urban Systems, I learned the system in 2 days and got a hold of procedures and such. It was pretty simple, but busy at times. The staff there are super nice.

What is the best part of working at the company?
Friendly people who seemed to genuinely care about your personal success.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Impossible training without resources to learn the job. Processes that are muddled together without logic that are beyond broken and a waste of time.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Me-first attitude that encourages people to stomp on others to get ahead. Everyone is accountable to their job, not to each other.

Interesting workplace. Many employees have been with the organization for 15+ years (20+ is not uncommon) so it can feel like a safe and comfortable career.
Too comfortable perhaps if you want to move up and progress. Some mentors are very helpful to junior staff (EITs), other roles lack leadership and are expected to stay the course or 'create their own role' which sounds good in theory...

Urban Systems is an amazing consultancy engineering firm. The culture is amazing, very emotionally intelligent people work across  all departments of this company, and a lot of very interesting work. A lot of younger hires, and more seasoned mid-senior employees, very good mentorship opportunities and lots of room to grow, my time as an intern was superb !!

Urban is flexible when you’re ill and I was able to figure out a life / work balance that works for my family and the work I do. 
They don’t have a formal management structure so if you need to be told what to do everyday, this might not be the company for you. 
I’ve liked my time at Urban and hope to continue to work there for years to come. 

Great summer job with a ton of walking. First day was a group training which we had a mentor with us. On the job we learned that there is a limit to how many cars map park in a specific location therefore its illegal to have over the limit. Co-workers were really nice.
