Our team currently includes electricians, building automation technicians, HVAC journeymen, G1 gas technicians, mechanical engineers and more.
Reports to the BAS Engineering Manager.
Position Summary:
The Senior BAS Designer supports the design, documentation, coordination, and technical delivery of Building Automation System projects within an integrated BAS, HVAC, electrical, and energy contracting environment.
Working under the direction of the BAS Engineering Manager, this role produces accurate, coordinated, and constructible BAS drawings and documentation while providing technical support throughout the project lifecycle. The position works closely with engineering, project management, programming, commissioning, service, and field teams to resolve technical issues and help ensure project requirements are clearly understood and successfully implemented.
The initial focus of the role will include a significant amount of hands-on drafting and drawing production. The successful candidate will also contribute to BAS design, technical project support, coordination, problem-solving, and the continued improvement of company standards, sequences, templates, and workflows.
This position requires practical BAS and HVAC knowledge, sound technical judgment, strong follow-through, and the ability to complete delegated work independently and to a high standard.
As the BAS division continues to grow, there may be opportunities to take on broader responsibilities in BAS design, technical coordination, project support, standards development, and process improvement based on capability, interests, and business needs.
Key Responsibilities:
· Produce coordinated BAS drawings and technical documentation, including:
o Control schematics and wiring diagrams
o Controller and control-panel layouts
o BAS network architecture and riser diagrams
o Point lists and I/O schedules
o Device layouts and installation details
o Equipment integration and interface details
· Interpret mechanical, electrical, and BAS contract documents, equipment submittals, sequences of operation, and project requirements.
· Support BAS design for construction, retrofit, energy, and design-build projects, including projects where customer or consultant direction is limited.
· Apply strong HVAC system and control-sequence knowledge to identify required controls, devices, interfaces, and operating requirements.
· Review project information for omissions, conflicts, coordination concerns, and constructability issues.
· Collaborate with the BAS Engineering Manager, programmers, technicians, commissioning personnel, project managers, electricians, and mechanical teams.
· Provide technical project support by:
o Assisting with equipment and control-device selections
o Responding to project and field questions
o Supporting RFIs, submittals, change documentation, and construction clarifications
o Reviewing field conditions and incorporating required changes
o Assisting with project turnover and as-built documentation
· Participate in project reviews and coordination meetings as required.
· Support electrical drafting and coordination for building and energy projects, including service upgrades, electrification projects, boiler conversions, and electrical feeds to mechanical equipment.
· Apply company standards, sequences, details, and templates consistently across projects.
· Actively participate in developing and improving BAS drawing standards, templates, standard details, sequences, and project workflows.
· Recommend practical improvements that increase drawing accuracy, consistency, constructability, and production efficiency.
· Complete assigned work independently, communicate concerns early, and minimize avoidable rework.
Qualifications:
· Five or more years of BAS, controls, building-systems design, or related technical experience is strongly preferred.
· Candidates with three or more years of directly relevant experience may be considered where they demonstrate strong HVAC and BAS knowledge, technical aptitude, and the ability to work independently.
· Mechanical or Electrical Engineering Technology diploma, CET designation, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.
· Strong working knowledge of:
o BAS architectures, controllers, networks, and field devices
o Commercial HVAC systems and equipment
o Common HVAC control strategies and sequences of operation
· Experience producing technical drawings using AutoCAD, Revit, Visio, or similar drafting and documentation software.
· Ability and willingness to become proficient in AutoCAD where it has not been the candidate’s primary drafting platform.
· Demonstrated ability to produce accurate and coordinated technical drawings and documentation.
· Ability to interpret mechanical and electrical drawings, specifications, and equipment submittals.
· Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Preferred or Asset Experience:
· Experience with a BAS, controls, mechanical, electrical, or multidisciplinary contractor.
· Previous BAS field, programming, commissioning, installation, or service experience.
· Electrical drafting or design experience related to building systems, power distribution, equipment connections, service upgrades, or electrification projects.
· Experience with energy conservation, optimization, retrofit, or design-build projects.
· Experience developing or improving technical standards, templates, details, or workflows.
· Familiarity with industry guidance such as ASHRAE Guideline 36.
Core Competencies and Fit:
· Positive, constructive, and team-oriented attitude
· Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality
· Practical and systems-oriented technical thinking
· Reliable follow-through and personal accountability
· Ability to prioritize and complete delegated assignments with limited oversight
· Comfortable working with incomplete or evolving project information
· Willingness to ask questions, identify risks, and propose practical solutions
· Collaborative and respectful approach to interdisciplinary teamwork
· Receptive to feedback and willing to provide constructive feedback to others
· Continuous-improvement mindset focused on accuracy, constructability, consistency, and efficiency
· Curiosity, initiative, and a willingness to learn
· Strong alignment with the company’s culture and team-based approach
