The Opportunity
Armstrong Milling is seeking a Commodity Procurement Specialist to join our team at our Hagersville-area facility.
This role is ideal for someone who thrives in a fast-paced manufacturing environment and enjoys coordinating purchasing, imports, logistics, and cross-functional communication. You will play a key role in managing inbound commodities, supporting procurement activities, coordinating freight, and ensuring accurate documentation and system integrity.
Primary Responsibilities
· Coordinate and manage grain imports, including weekly release of wild bird ingredients and maintaining accurate grain position pages and inbound commodity spreadsheets.
· Create, enter, and maintain commodity purchase contracts and purchase orders in the ERP system (Epicor), ensuring completeness and accuracy.
· Track commodity prices, inventory levels, and position data to support forecasting and purchasing decisions.
· Book freight and manage inbound logistics, including intermodal and rail opportunities, while focusing on securing competitive freight rates.
· Ensure import and customs documentation is complete, accurate, and submitted to appropriate channels; work with customs brokers and suppliers to resolve documentation or shipment issues.
· Support receiving and Accounts Payable by troubleshooting discrepancies, validating receiving reports, and communicating with suppliers about discounts or adjustments.
· Update Supplier Performance Logs when rejections occur and communicate issues to Quality and relevant leadership.
· Maintain operational calendars and tracking tools, including Elevator/Resale Google Calendar and inbound commodity schedules.
· Attend weekly Grain Huddle and monthly Grain Meetings, prepare tracking sheets, reports, and take minutes as required.
Secondary Responsibilities
· Coordinate outbound logistics, including freight booking, customs requirements, and monitor detention and per-charge costs to ensure accurate payment and cost recovery.
· Assist with inventory discrepancies and reconciliation as needed.
· Maintain Groaters Google Calendar and ERP schedules related to groating operations.
· Prepare customer documentation such as Certificates of Analysis (COAs) and other paperwork requirements.
· Support groating quality control points, including magnet check paperwork and samples, and managing outbound quality issues or rejections.
· Attend meetings required to support business objectives and provide backup coverage for holidays or sick days within the department.
Qualifications / Requirements
Education
· College diploma or certificate in Business, Supply Chain, Logistics, or a related field preferred.
· A combination of secondary school education and relevant experience in logistics, purchasing, import/export, or manufacturing may be considered.
Experience
· 2-3 years of experience in a role involving purchasing, logistics, inventory control, or import/export activities.
· Experience working with customs brokers, import documentation, and freight carriers (road, rail, intermodal) is an asset.
· Prior experience using an ERP system (Epicor or similar) for contracts, purchase/sales orders, inventory, and shipment processing.
Technical and Software Proficiency
· Microsoft Excel: Intermediate level (data entry, sorting/filtering, basic formulas and lookups, simple reports).
· Epicor ERP: Proficient in entering into contracts, processing purchase and sales orders, updating inventory movements, and running basic reports.
· Comfortable using shared calendars and collaboration tools (e.g., Google Calendar, Teams) for scheduling and communication.
Core Skills and Competencies
· Strong attention to detail and high accuracy in data entry, documentation, and record keeping.
· Solid numerical and analytical skills for working with commodity prices, freight costs, and inventory data.
· Effective written and verbal communication skills for interacting with suppliers, customs brokers, freight providers, and internal departments.
· Good organizational and time-management skills, with the ability to handle multiple shipments, deadlines, and priorities.
· Proven problem-solving skills for resolving receiving discrepancies, documentation issues, and logistics or detention charge questions.
· Ability to work both independently and collaboratively, with a customer-service mindset toward internal stakeholders and external partners.
Pay: $55,000.00-$60,000.00 per year
