The Opportunity
Otter Wise Talent Solutions is proud to partner with a leading Canadian industrial construction organization to recruit an experienced Structural Superintendent – Industrial Construction supporting major industrial projects throughout Canada.
Reporting to the Construction Manager, this position is responsible for leading the execution of structural steel construction scopes across complex industrial projects within the mining, energy, petrochemical, manufacturing, water, and heavy industrial sectors.
The Structural Superintendent will oversee field operations involving structural steel erection, rigging, crane activities, welding coordination, prefabricated structures, equipment supports, platforms, stairways, and miscellaneous steel installations while ensuring work is completed safely, efficiently, on schedule, and to the highest standards of quality.
This opportunity is ideal for a field-first construction leader who enjoys leading crews, coordinating complex structural installations, mentoring tradespeople, and delivering successful industrial construction projects.
Key ResponsibilitiesConstruction Leadership
- Lead structural steel construction activities from mobilization through project completion.
- Participate in constructability reviews, bid reviews, and project planning activities.
- Develop and manage detailed construction schedules and short-interval look-ahead plans.
- Coordinate labour, subcontractors, crane operations, equipment, materials, and vendors.
- Monitor project productivity, cost performance, and schedule milestones.
- Identify project risks and implement mitigation strategies.
- Support project change management activities throughout construction.
- Ensure structural construction activities are completed safely, efficiently, and in accordance with project specifications.
Structural Construction Operations
- Supervise structural steel erection, installation, bolting, welding coordination, and alignment activities.
- Coordinate heavy lifts, crane operations, rigging, hoisting, and structural installations.
- Review and interpret structural drawings, shop drawings, specifications, erection plans, and technical documents.
- Ensure proper alignment, plumbness, leveling, and installation tolerances are achieved.
- Coordinate installation of equipment supports, stairways, platforms, monorails, handrails, and miscellaneous structural steel.
- Oversee welding, bolting, inspections, and quality control activities.
- Support pre-commissioning, commissioning, and turnover activities where required.
- Lead troubleshooting and resolution of constructability and installation challenges.
Health, Safety & Quality
- Champion a proactive safety-first culture across all structural construction activities.
- Lead toolbox talks, field inspections, and hazard assessments.
- Ensure compliance with client safety requirements and company safety programs.
- Coordinate quality inspections and ensure structural installations meet engineering specifications.
- Monitor welding, bolting, alignment, and inspection documentation.
- Promote continuous improvement in safety, productivity, and quality performance.
Leadership & Client Support
- Mentor General Forepersons, Forepersons, Journeypersons, Apprentices, and field personnel.
- Foster a collaborative, respectful, and high-performing work environment.
- Coordinate closely with Project Management, Engineering, Quality, Project Controls, Procurement, and Construction teams.
- Interface with clients to provide project updates and resolve field issues.
- Build strong relationships with subcontractors, vendors, suppliers, and project stakeholders.
- Support workforce development through coaching, mentoring, and technical leadership.
Qualifications
- Minimum five (5) years of industrial construction experience with a significant focus on structural steel construction.
- Previous experience in a Superintendent, General Foreperson, or senior supervisory position.
- Extensive experience supervising structural steel erection and heavy industrial construction activities.
- Strong knowledge of structural steel installation, rigging, crane operations, and heavy lifts.
- Ability to read and interpret structural drawings, shop drawings, erection drawings, and technical specifications.
- Experience coordinating welding, bolting, alignment, and structural quality inspections.
- Strong understanding of structural quality control and inspection requirements.
- Experience coordinating subcontractors, union trades, crane operators, and construction teams.
- Strong planning, scheduling, organizational, and resource-management skills.
- Demonstrated ability to manage multiple work fronts within fast-paced industrial environments.
- Excellent leadership, communication, stakeholder-management, and problem-solving skills.
- Demonstrated commitment to safety, quality, and operational excellence.
- Legally authorized to work in Canada.

- Journeyperson Ironworker Certification.
- Equivalent structural steel construction leadership experience.
- Fly-In/Fly-Out or rotational project experience.
- Experience supervising union and non-union workforces.
- Experience leading major industrial capital projects.
- Valid driver's licence.

- Competitive salary of $130,000 - $165,000, depending on experience and qualifications.

Work Environment & Travel
- Full-time permanent position supporting industrial construction projects throughout Canada.
- Site-based leadership role requiring travel to project locations.
- Fly-In/Fly-Out and rotational project assignments.
- Typical rotations may include:
- 14 Days On / 7 Days Off
- 10 Days On / 4 Days Off
- Candidates must be willing to travel based on project requirements.
- Projects may be located across British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, and other regions of Canada.
