The Opportunity
We are seeking an experienced Controller to lead the organization’s finance and accounting functions across its related companies.
This is a hands-on, detailed, Controller role with responsibility for financial reporting, project accounting, WIP, cash-flow management, budgeting, payroll, internal controls. The Controller will work closely with the leadership and project management teams, providing accurate financial information and practical insights to support business decisions.
The successful candidate will be technically strong, highly accountable and comfortable moving between detailed accounting work and higher-level financial analysis. They will also take ownership of improving systems, documenting processes and ensuring the finance function keeps pace with the organization’s growth.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Reporting and Analysis
- Lead the month-end and year-end close processes and ensure financial information is complete, accurate and delivered on time.
- Prepare and analyze monthly and annual financial statements, including income statements, balance sheets and cash-flow statements.
- Provide financial analysis, reporting and practical insights to the leadership team and operational managers.
- Prepare and record accruals, journal entries, deferred revenue and other month-end adjustments.
- Coordinate year-end review engagements and work closely with the organization’s external accountants.
- Ensure compliance with applicable accounting standards and local, provincial and federal reporting requirements.
Budgeting and Financial Planning
- Lead the annual budgeting and forecasting process in collaboration with department leaders.
- Monitor actual results against budgets and forecasts, investigate variances and recommend corrective action where required.
- Identify opportunities to improve margins, reduce costs and strengthen operating efficiency.
- Develop management reporting that helps leaders understand performance and make informed decisions.
- Contribute financial insight to the organization’s strategic planning and growth initiatives.
Project and Inventory Accounting
- Oversee weekly and monthly job-cost reporting.
- Monitor project costs, purchase commitments, invoicing and financial performance.
- Analyze project activity, calculate monthly revenue and prepare the related accounting entries.
- Work closely with the finance and project management teams to improve the accuracy and usefulness of project reporting.
- Complete monthly inventory reconciliations, including reserved inventory and related adjustments.
- Maintain accurate reporting for deferred revenue, work in progress and project commitments.
Cash-Flow and Working-Capital Management
- Prepare and maintain cash-flow forecasts to ensure the organization can meet its operational and financial obligations.
- Monitor project invoicing, collections and payment cycles.
- Oversee accounts receivable, collections, accounts payable and payment processing.
- Recommend and implement improvements to working-capital management.
- Ensure bank accounts, credit cards and other balance-sheet accounts are reconciled accurately and on time.
Payroll and Administration
- Oversee payroll processing and related reporting.
- Administer employee benefits, RRSP contributions and submissions to benefit providers.
- Reconcile employee bonuses, vacation balances, sick time and other compensation-related items.
- Prepare and file payroll-related and regulatory reports, including WCB reporting.
- Support the effective use and administration of the organization’s accounting, ERP and related business systems.
Qualifications and Experience
- Accounting designation, with a CPA designation preferred.
- At least five to seven years of full-cycle accounting experience, including experience in a Controller or comparable senior accounting role.
- At least five years of experience leading or supervising accounting or administrative team members.
- Demonstrated experience leading a team with two or more direct reports.
- Experience coordinating multiple year-end review engagements with external accountants.
- Strong knowledge of accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, general ledger accounting, reconciliations and financial reporting.
- Experience with project accounting, job costing, inventory and revenue recognition is strongly preferred.
- Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Excel and strong working knowledge of Word, Outlook and Windows-based systems.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to identify and resolve accounting and reconciliation issues.
- Ability to prioritize competing demands, delegate effectively and consistently meet deadlines.
- Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills.
- A high degree of judgment, integrity, discretion and attention to detail.
