ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY

This position reports to the Director of Health & Community Services and will work closely with the Community Health Manager.

The Recreation Program Planner is responsible for taking an active role in the administration and safe delivery of Fort Nelson First Nation’s (FNFN) recreation programs for children, youth, and their families. This includes planning and delivering seasonal camps, after-school and out-of-school programs, recreational sports, social activities, and community field trips that support physical activity, social connection, and overall well-being.

Through positive engagement, this employee will support FNFN’s Reaching for Our Vision priorities, respecting culture and community. Working closely with department staff and occasionally collaborating across departments, the Recreation Program Planner supports departmental goals by planning, organizing, promoting, and delivering recreational events and activities that encourage strong participation.

Additional responsibilities include securing and preparing venues, coordinating talent, service providers, and support staff, as well as scheduling events and activities. Success in this role requires developing an understanding of Indigenous recreation programs and services that our department makes accessible to our community members. The Recreation Program Planner acts as a lead to recreation support staff as needed, helps ensure clear communication of program information, coordinates registration and waiver processes, and supports the use and upkeep of program assets. WHAT YOU BRING

Knowledge & Experience

2-3 years of administrative experience in a program-based setting
Experience planning and leading community programs and activities for all age groups
Experience with budget tracking, filing systems, record keeping and report writing
Mature individual with a minimum grade 12 high school diploma; supplemented by completion of post-secondary administration training, or equivalent related experience

Skills & Abilities

Good interpersonal skills and ability to interact well with employees and the public.
Good organizational skills and able to handle competing priorities and meet deadlines
Excellent communication skills (written and verbal).
Proficient computer skills such as MS Office Suite and/or Google™ Workspace products.
Ability to listen to understand and ask questions for clarification.

Other Requirements

Minimum 19 years of age.
Interest and desire to work with all ages of community members in the context of recreation service.
No barriers to working with any member of the community and their family representative(s)
Able to work a flexible schedule that may include mornings/afternoons/evenings/weekends to meet program planning and implementation needs.
Physical fitness to perform the work and ability to work indoors and outdoors in a variety of weather
Compliance with BC Immunization program and TB Screening.
Satisfactory completion of a police information check (vulnerable sector)
Ability to provide own transportation to work.
Valid Class 5 BC Driver’s License and Drivers Abstract.

Optional/Assets

Ability to speak Dene and/or Cree.
Class 4 driver’s license
Other certificates such as: WHMIS, First Aid, Food Safe Level 1, Responsible Adult Training
Previous experience working within First Nations organizations

WORK SETTING

The regular work schedule is expected to be Monday to Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. or 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. once programming is fully established. During the initial program development phase, the schedule may be adjusted to 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. to support planning and development. During the summer program overseen by this position, the standard hours will be 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Flexible hours, including earlier or later start times, evenings, and weekends, will be required to support programs and services. Travel is a requirement of this role, which involves working both in and out of the office, including indoor, outdoor, and multi-site locations. Overtime may be required with prior approval from the supervisor(s).
