SSE Operations Staff within the Schulich School of Engineering is currently seeking a Full-time Limited Term Research Intelligence Analyst for approximately 24 months.
Reporting to the Operations Manager, the incumbent requires strong analytical, technical, project management, and communication skills, as well as the ability to translate complex data into actionable insights for diverse stakeholders. Based in the Dean's Office support team with focus to support the Associate Dean (Research), this role develops and maintains research performance dashboards, identifies funding and award opportunities, and implements technology-enabled solutions that improve research administration and decision-making.
This position serves as a bridge between faculty, research administration, IT, and institutional data teams. The successful candidate will leverage analytics, automation, and AI tools to support strategic planning, improve operational efficiency, identify emerging opportunities, and enhance the visibility of research achievements across the School.
Faculty Analytics is an essential division of Faculty Affairs. It provides strategic advice on data-related inquiries, pulls available data, reviews data for accuracy, develops reports, and visualizes data. It serves customers across the Schulich School of Engineering as well as the University and community partners.
This position works Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., primarily in person on the University of Calgary main campus with the possibility of 1 remote day per week
Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):
Research Analytics and Reporting
- Design, develop, and maintain an AI agent that gathers funding and award opportunities from internal and external sources and matches them to faculty based on research interests, publications, and project history.

Build and maintain the supporting data pipeline, including the collection of grant and award opportunities (from unstructured PDFs, funder websites, and other sources), structured faculty research profiles, and feedback signals.

Implement semantic search, retrieval-augmented generation, embeddings, and ranking logic to ensure matches reflect research strengths and expertise, rather than simple keyword overlap.

Design and maintain the human-in-the-loop experience, including notifications, faculty feedback channels, and the continuous improvement of match quality.

Monitor agent performance, model costs, and output quality; refine prompts, retrieval methods, and ranking approaches as the system evolves.

Develop and maintain data quality standards, documentation, and processes to ensure research intelligence is accurate, reliable, and current.

Evaluate and implement appropriate analytics, AI, and visualization tools to improve research intelligence and reporting capabilities.
Research Intelligence and Opportunity Matching

Streamline administrative barriers across the School's research operations (grant intake, deadline tracking, document collection, internal and funder reporting) and develop practical automations to support continual improvements.

Develop and maintain internal tools, scripts, and integrations between existing systems to improve administrative workflows and address operational bottlenecks.

Build collaborative relationships with faculty members to increase awareness of funding opportunities, understand research priorities, and connect researchers with relevant funding opportunities and collaborators.

Translate research intelligence and analytical findings into clear, actionable recommendations for faculty, administrators, and leadership.

Develop productive working relationships with faculty, IT, central administration, and external partners to improve access to research opportunities and institutional data.
Process Improvement and Automation
- Identify opportunities to improve research administration processes through automation, workflow optimization, and technology-enabled solutions.

Collaborate with faculty, staff, IT, and institutional partners to implement sustainable solutions.

Maintain process documentation and continuously monitor and improve research data processes, workflows, and reporting standards.

Identify data quality, privacy, and operational risks related to research information systems and recommend appropriate mitigation strategies.
Research Communications, AI Enablement, and Other Duties

Identify and communicate notable research achievements and emerging areas of strength to support recognition and promotion of Schulich research.

Work with IT, the central data team, and Legal to ensure AI use respects data privacy, IP, FIPPA, and tri-agency requirements.

Support research events on campus, either providing information and presenting available grants and/or supporting the event process.
- Support data governance practices by promoting responsible, ethical, and compliant use of institutional research data.

Remain current with emerging AI, analytics, and research administration technologies, evaluating opportunities to improve services and operational efficiency.

Develop reports, dashboards, and presentations that communicate research performance, funding trends, and emerging opportunities to a variety of audiences.
Qualifications / Requirements:

Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Software Engineering, Information Systems, Business Analytics or related field. Master's degree preferred.

3-5 years of professional experience in analytics, software development, business intelligence, AI-enabled solutions, or related roles. A combination of education, training, and experience will be considered.

Experience developing and maintaining data pipelines, dashboards, reporting systems, and automated workflows.

Advanced Python programming skills and experience with one or more agent or LLM frameworks (e.g., LangChain, LlamaIndex, or equivalent) are required. Experience with Power BI, SQL/database technologies, and automation frameworks is strongly preferred.

Experience applying AI technologies to business or research processes is required.

Demonstrated analytical, problem-solving, project management, and communication skills.

Ability to work collaboratively with technical and non-technical stakeholders is a valued skill.

Expertise in statistical analysis and data modeling, including linking strategic needs to customized data gathering and analysis plans.

Experience in a research-intensive, post-secondary, or grants environment is considered an asset.

Familiarity with UCalgary systems (e.g., Enterprise Reporting, Research and Trust Accounting, Elsevier, HR Systems and Reporting) is an asset.

Familiarity with Canadian privacy, data governance, and research administration requirements is considered an asset.
