Job Summary

One of our client is currently hiring an Assistant Controller. The Assistant Controller will support the Controller and Chief Financial Officer in managing accounting and financial operations for a transportation company. This role will be involved in financial reporting, budgeting, compliance, payroll, cost analysis, fleet accounting, and operational financial support.

Job Title: Assistant Controller
Department: Finance & Accounting
Location: Richmond Hill, ON
Job Type: Full-Time
Reports To: Controller / Chief Financial Officer

Responsibilities

Assist with monthly, quarterly, and annual financial close processes
Prepare and review financial statements in accordance with GAAP standards
Maintain general ledger accuracy and complete account reconciliations
Analyze financial variances and provide reporting insights to leadership
Monitor fleet-related costs including fuel, maintenance, leasing, and depreciation
Support revenue recognition for freight, logistics, contracts, and mileage-based billing
Assist with budgeting, forecasting, financial modeling, and scenario analysis
Maintain internal controls and support audit and compliance requirements
Ensure compliance with transportation industry regulations and reporting requirements
Oversee accounts payable, accounts receivable, billing accuracy, and collections
Monitor cash flow and working capital management
Oversee payroll processing and ensure compliance with wage and overtime regulations
Analyze labour costs and driver compensation structures
Supervise accounting staff and collaborate with operations, dispatch, and fleet teams
Provide financial insights to support business decisions
Act as backup support to the Controller when required

Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
CPA designation preferred
4+ years of progressive accounting experience
Experience in transportation, logistics, trucking, or fleet-based industries preferred
Strong knowledge of financial reporting, audits, and accounting principles
Proficiency with accounting software and advanced Excel skills
Experience with transportation management systems (CargoWise considered an asset)
Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills
Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment
Excellent communication and collaboration skills
High level of integrity and commitment to compliance

Pay: $23.00-$25.00 per hour
