Part-Time Ontario Certified Teacher (OCT)
Literacy & Math Intervention | Burlington & Milton
Appletree Learning Centre is seeking a committed Ontario Certified Teacher to support our growing Halton locations in Burlington and Milton.
This is a permanent, year-round part-time position offering:

Schedule and Location
Candidates must be available:
- Tuesday and Thursday evenings (5-8 pm) in Burlington
- Saturday mornings (8 am - 12 pm) in Milton
Locations:
- Burlington: 980 Fraser Drive
- Milton: 400 Bronte Street South
Candidates must have reliable transportation and be able to support both locations as needed.
All in-person training takes place at our Etobicoke location at 3090 Bloor Street West.
About Appletree Learning Centre
Appletree Learning Centre specializes in one-to-one academic remediation for students with learning disabilities, ADHD, dyslexia, and persistent gaps in foundational literacy, writing, and math skills.
Our work goes beyond traditional tutoring. Rather than focusing on homework support, we identify and address the underlying skill deficits that may be preventing students from progressing successfully at school.
Through structured, evidence-based instruction, our teachers help students:
- Develop phonemic awareness, decoding, accuracy, and reading fluency
- Strengthen comprehension and language skills

Our Instructional Approach
Appletree uses highly structured, evidence-based intervention programs, including SRA Direct Instruction (Reading Mastery, Corrective Reading, etc.) and JUMP Math.
Teachers receive comprehensive training in our instructional model and ongoing support as they develop confidence and expertise in delivering these programs.
Lessons are structured, fast-paced, and focused on measurable student progress.
About the Role
This position supports our Burlington and Milton locations.
Teachers provide one-to-one instruction to students from Kindergarten to Grade 8 who may require intensive support in reading, writing, language, or math.

Working Independently
Teachers in our Halton locations are often the only Appletree staff member on site during their shift.
This role therefore requires a high degree of independence, professional judgment, and accountability.
Teachers are expected to:
- Work confidently without direct on-site supervision
- Follow established procedures and instructional protocols
- Use available resources and training materials to work through challenges
- Communicate proactively with the leadership team when support is required
- Take ownership of student preparation, programming, and session delivery
- Maintain professional standards consistently across both locations
Leadership support remains available, but candidates must be comfortable operating independently and making sound professional decisions.

Commitment Expectations
We invest significant time and resources into training and are seeking candidates who value consistency and long-term commitment.
Candidates must be able to commit to a consistent schedule from September through August. While summer scheduling is more flexible, continued availability through the summer months is required.
This role is best suited for educators seeking a stable, long-term position and whose availability is unlikely to change due to other teaching opportunities during the school year.

Training & Onboarding
Training takes place in August and is a required component of this role.
The process begins with self-directed completion of our video training modules, which candidates are expected to work through independently and thoroughly. These modules provide the foundational knowledge required to move into in-person training.
Upon completion, candidates will participate in a structured combination of in-person observations and team teaching sessions to apply and refine their skills.
All in-person training takes place at our Etobicoke location (3090 Bloor Street W) between the hours of 10:00 am and 8:00 pm.
While training is not scheduled daily, candidates must be flexible and available during this period to complete approximately 8 observation sessions and 10 team teaching sessions.
All training components must be completed before students begin in September. Candidates who are unable to commit to this training schedule should not apply.
Requirements
- Ontario Certified Teacher (OCT)
- Exceptional command of spoken English, including the ability to clearly model sounds, blending, and language structures for early literacy instruction
- Strong instructional ability in literacy and math (up to Grade 8)
- Ability to deliver structured, evidence-based instructional programs with consistency and attention to detail
- Strong reliability, organization, and professionalism
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Valid Police Reference Check with Vulnerable Sector Screening
Assets
- Special Education qualifications or experience
- Experience with Direct Instruction or structured literacy programs
- Experience teaching math up to Grade 8
- Experience teaching writing (paragraph and essay structure)
- Comfortable adapting between in-person and virtual instruction when needed
