Full job description

We are looking to add a motivated 1st Year Heavy Duty Mechanic Apprentice to our team.

This position will work primarily in the shop assisting our Journeyman Mechanic with repairs, maintenance and general upkeep of our drilling and support equipment fleet.

For the right candidate, there is also an opportunity to take part in field drilling operations once shop priorities are caught up. This provides additional hands-on experience with the equipment, exposure to field operations, and opportunities to earn overtime while developing a broader mechanical and operational skill set.

Responsibilities

Assist the Journeyman Mechanic with repairs, maintenance and troubleshooting
Perform routine service and preventative maintenance
Assist with repairs on drilling rigs, commercial vehicles, trailers and support equipment
Complete inspections and help identify mechanical deficiencies
Maintain a clean, organized and safe shop environment
Pick up parts, materials and supplies as required
Assist with equipment washing, preparation and general shop upkeep
Help organize parts, tools and inventory
Complete various shop and yard-related tasks as required
Follow company safety procedures and work practices
Assist with field repairs and drilling operations when opportunities are available

Qualifications Required

Registered or eligible to register as a 1st Year Heavy Duty Equipment Technician Apprentice
Valid driver's licence
Strong mechanical aptitude and willingness to learn
Ability to safely use hand and power tools
Ability to perform physical work including lifting, bending and working around heavy equipment
Dependable, organized and able to follow direction
Strong attention to detail
Ability to work independently on assigned tasks
Willingness to complete parts runs and other shop-related duties as required

Strong Assets

Previous mechanical, automotive, agricultural, construction or heavy equipment experience
Experience working around diesel engines, hydraulics or commercial vehicles
Welding or fabrication experience
Experience operating equipment
Class 3 or Class 1 driver's licence
Previous shop or field experience

Equipment & Work Environment

Our fleet includes geotechnical drilling rigs, commercial trucks, track-mounted equipment, trailers and a variety of support equipment.

The successful candidate will gain exposure to:

Diesel engines
Hydraulic systems
Electrical systems
Commercial vehicles
Drilling equipment
Track-mounted equipment
Trailers and support equipment

Tools are supplied.

Field Opportunities

This is primarily a shop-based apprenticeship position; however, when repair and maintenance priorities allow, the successful candidate may have opportunities to participate in field drilling operations.

Field opportunities can provide:

Additional overtime hours
Hands-on experience operating and working around drilling equipment
Exposure to real-world equipment performance and troubleshooting
Additional equipment and safety training
Greater understanding of how the equipment is used in the field

This can be a valuable opportunity for an apprentice who wants to become a well-rounded Heavy Duty Mechanic with strong knowledge of both equipment repair and operation.

The right candidate will take pride in their work, look after tools and equipment, maintain a clean workspace, and be willing to learn from an experienced Journeyman while steadily taking on more responsibility as their skills develop.
