The Position:
The Data Center Design Engineer will oversee projects from initial site due diligence and conceptual design through detailed engineering, manufacturing, site deployment, commissioning, and project closeout.
This is a hands-on, client-facing role requiring a strong understanding of mission-critical infrastructure, multidisciplinary engineering coordination, and data center project delivery.
The successful candidate will work closely with Digital Shovel’s internal engineering, manufacturing, procurement, project management, and commissioning teams, as well as external consultants, contractors, utilities, vendors, and clients.
Job Responsibilities:
- Coordinate multidisciplinary data center design activities across architectural, civil, structural, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, fire protection, security, ICT, BMS, and EPMS disciplines.
- Translate client requirements into clear design criteria, technical specifications, and project deliverables.
- Review engineering drawings, calculations, equipment selections, specifications, and technical submissions.
- Coordinate the integration of modular data center systems with site utilities, electrical infrastructure, cooling systems, controls, networking, and life-safety systems.
- Work closely with internal engineering, manufacturing, procurement, project management, and commissioning teams.
- Coordinate external consultants, contractors, vendors, utilities, and local engineering partners.
- Participate in client meetings, design reviews, technical workshops, and project coordination meetings.
- Maintain design schedules, deliverable lists, action-item trackers, and technical documentation.
- Identify design, constructability, procurement, scheduling, and commissioning risks and support the development of practical solutions.
- Manage design changes, technical clarifications, client requests, and outstanding engineering issues.
- Support constructability reviews, peer reviews, quality checks, factory acceptance testing, site acceptance testing, and commissioning activities.
- Assist with technical proposals, project scopes, schedules, cost estimates, and commercial submissions.
- Provide clear project updates to clients, internal teams, and company leadership.
- Build strong working relationships with clients and project stakeholders.
Qualification and Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, or a related discipline.
- At least eight years of experience in engineering, design coordination, or project delivery.
- Experience working on data centers, mission-critical facilities, industrial projects, energy infrastructure, or similarly complex environments.
- Strong knowledge of mechanical and electrical systems used in mission-critical facilities.
- Experience coordinating multidisciplinary engineering teams and external consultants.
- Ability to review drawings, specifications, calculations, equipment selections, and other technical documents.
- Strong organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to manage multiple projects and competing deadlines.
- Ability to travel outside of Canada, including but not limited to the USA, Europe, the Middle East & Asia as required.
Preferred Qualifications
- Licensed Professional Engineer in Ontario or eligible for licensure.
- Experience designing or delivering data center infrastructure.
- Experience with modular construction, prefabricated systems, or off-site manufacturing.
- Knowledge of high-density power distribution, backup power, air cooling, direct liquid cooling, BMS, or EPMS systems.
- Experience supporting factory testing, site deployment, commissioning, or integrated systems testing.
- Familiarity with Canadian and U.S. building, electrical, mechanical, and fire-protection codes.
Schedule:
- Monday to Thursday: 9 am to 5:30 pm
- Friday: 9 am to 3 pm
