Full job description

Estimator / Project Manager – Civil Earthworks

Thompson Construction Group has an exciting opportunity for an Estimator / Project Manager – Civil Earthworks based out of our head office in Spruce Grove, Alberta. The position will report primarily to the Estimating Manager while working out of the Spruce Grove office, with a dotted-line reporting relationship to the Director of Strategic Assets for the Project Management portion of the role.

This is a hybrid role with the primary focus on estimating from the Spruce Grove office. Approximately once every three weeks, depending on project demands, the successful candidate will travel to site, typically Suncor Base Mine, where the focus will shift primarily to Project Management and supporting active operations.

Schedule: Monday to Friday (5x2), with site travel approximately once every three weeks as project demands require.

Responsibilities

Estimating

Development of estimates ranging from conceptual estimates for proposals and feasibility studies to detailed estimates for new and ongoing projects
Review tender documents to determine scope of work, requirements, and potential risks
Develop execution plans, project schedules and personnel histograms for tender submissions
Complete quantity take-offs, quantity reconciliation, crew production calculations, cycle times, and project duration estimates
Obtain, evaluate, and compare pricing from suppliers and subcontractors
Identify and quantify potential project risks/opportunities and incorporate appropriate allowances into estimates
Review design options and recommend solutions based on cost, constructability, engineering requirements, and material availability
Prepare and coordinate final estimate packages for management review
Conduct detailed analysis of completed estimates and benchmark against similar projects
Lead internal bid reviews and participate in tender-related discussions with internal and external stakeholders
Maintain and update supplier and subcontractor pricing information and estimating databases
Collaborate with site supervision and operations to develop project execution plans and validate production and scheduling assumptions
Communicate estimate details to operations and supporting departments following contract award to support budget development and project handoff
Review actual project costs against estimates and incorporate lessons learned into future estimates
Provide support for change order development and pricing as required -move to PM?
Attend client meetings associated with pre-tender, post-tender, and project start-ups

Project Management

When on site, the successful candidate will primarily support project management and active operations by:

Managing project timelines and budgets to ensure projects are completed on schedule and within project requirements
Providing scheduling support for estimates and active projects
Organizing and overseeing daily project operations
Coordinating with suppliers, subcontractors, site supervision, and crews
Managing change orders, including quoting and cost analysis related to scope changes
Preparing project reporting, including cost summaries, load count reports, daily LEM reporting, volume tracking, and invoicing
Participating in progress, supervisor, management, and client meetings
Reviewing daily foreman reports for coding accuracy
Conducting job site visits with management and supervision
Supporting project quotes, budget estimates, and month-end accrual reporting

Qualifications

Minimum 5 years of experience in estimating and/or project management, preferably within earthworks construction and/or oil & gas
Diploma or degree in Civil Engineering or a related discipline
Strong understanding of civil earthworks construction and project execution
Strong computer skills, including Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and MS Project or Primavera
Strong written and verbal communication skills
Excellent organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities
Ability to work independently and effectively in a fast-paced environment
Valid Class 5 driver's license
Willingness to travel to the Fort McMurray area as project requirements dictate
CSO/BSO Certification considered an asset
Ability to pass a pre-access drug and alcohol test
