Full job description

Opportunity: Reading Program Facilitator (on-site)

Status: Contractor (up to 15 hours per week over 6-7 months each year)

Weekly Commitment: 3 to 4 days per week (from approx 3 pm - 6 pm)

Program Delivery Cycles: Spring: March - June and Fall: September - December

Number of Openings: Four (4)

Rate: $25.00 per hour

Position Summary

This role will support and facilitate our Reading Partnership for Parents (RPP) program. RPP is a safe space for families to come together and learn. Providing an evidence-informed reading program that has helped hundreds of caregivers teach their children ages 4-6 to read. Delivered in 10 weekly lessons, trained facilitators introduce learning strategies as children and their caregivers participate in play-based activities. At the end of the program, caregivers will have the skills, knowledge, resources, patience and confidence to create a positive learning environment at home.

You will join a team of educators, coordinators and delivery partners committed to creating an engaging learning experience and fostering a fun, inclusive environment that participation and growth. Your responsibilities include delivering and facilitating the reading program, ensuring participant involvement, tracking attendance and assignment completion, and monitoring progress throughout the program. Each facilitator will receive comprehensive training on program delivery requirements, along with ongoing support from TRP staff as needed. Additionally, you will assist with pre and post-session assessments to evaluate the program’s success.

Responsibilities

Support parents as they develop the skills & confidence needed to teach their children how to read.
Help children as they develop the social & literacy skills needed to be successful in school & life.
Train to become an expert in delivering the program curriculum and conducting assessments for children and caregivers while providing a fun and interactive environment.
Candidates must be available up to 15 hours weekly from March to June and September to December.

Qualifications and Requirements

We require individuals who possess experience working with culturally diverse communities.
Early Childhood Education (ECE), B.ED, RECE, CSW, CYW and community workers are encouraged to apply.
Have successful experiences leading community-based workshops involving marginalized community members, particularly women.
Demonstrate an interest in family reading and literacy practices and will ideally have knowledge of best practices for teaching reading to young children (age 4 to 6).
Excellent planning, time management & organizational skills.
Enthusiastic, high energy, collaborative, family-centric approach to facilitation.
Experience with video conferencing platforms, including Zoom and Google Meet, is preferred.
Access to the internet and laptop/computer with video & audio capability is required.
Must have the ability to commute around the Scarborough / GTA (access to a vehicle is a significant asset)

The Reading Partnership (TRP) began as a response to the low literacy rates in Toronto’s Kingston-Galloway/Orton Park (KGO) neighbourhood. In 2011, 49% of Grade 3 students across the KGO neighbourhood were not meeting the provincial standards for reading, with Black, low-income, and racialized students being overrepresented in this number.

TRP was established that same year with the goal to promote and improve literacy in low-income, high potential communities in Scarborough and beyond. Built to help children and families who are typically failed by the education system, TRP provides access to free, high-quality literacy programs. A decade later, our work is growing into a movement dedicated to improving literacy all across Canada.
