POSITION OVERVIEW:
The Globe and Mail is seeking an Audio Editor, Programming to lead the curation, packaging and presentation of our audio journalism within a dedicated digital audio hub. This role sits at the intersection of editorial judgment and audience engagement. You will ensure that our audio hub showcases the best of The Globe’s narrated articles, podcasts and special audio programming, while helping audiences discover new content that informs, inspires and deepens their understanding of the world. This is for a new vacancy, and this position is a hybrid role based in Toronto.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Curation and Programming
- Curate, assemble and program editorially compelling audio packages for the Globe’s audio hub.
- Maintain a dynamic, high-quality listening experience through effective story selection, playlist organization and timely updates.
- Surface evergreen, topical and thematic audio content based on news cycles, audience interests and journalistic priorities.
- Collaborate with producers and editors to ensure new episodes and audio-enabled reporting is promoted effectively and consistently.
Editorial Execution
- Collaborate with the Executive Editor and other leaders in:
- Refining the audio programming strategies to grow engagement and strengthen the Globe’s audio identity.
- Identifying trends, listening habits and opportunities to connect audiences with a wider range of Globe audio offerings.
- Work closely with audience, product, and design teams to enhance the hub’s usability, discoverability and visual storytelling elements.
Production and Quality Control
- Ensure all curated audio packages meet Globe editorial standards.
- Assist with writing and editing headlines, other display copy and metadata to optimize audience engagement.
- Monitor audio publishing workflows to ensure timely delivery and presentation of content.
- Some audio editing as required.
Cross-team Collaboration
- Act as a liaison between the audio team, digital editors and newsroom partners to align programming with broader editorial goals.
- Support producing and editing special projects, editorial series and major national events with tailored audio collections.
- Serve as an advocate for audio across the newsroom, helping colleagues understand audio opportunities and encouraging audio forward approaches to storytelling.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- At least three years of experience working in digital media.
- Strong news judgment and a clear understanding of audience behaviour.
- Excellent headline writing skills and comfort crafting compelling display copy.
- Familiarity with building rich digital storytelling experiences across platforms.
- Strong communicator with the ability to multitask and collaborate effectively across teams.
- Avid news consumer with a keen sense of what makes audio journalism engaging.
- Ability to work shifts that may include early mornings, evenings or weekends.
- Comfortable working in digital CMS environments, content planning tools and other publishing platforms.
- Familiarity with Adobe Audition or similar tools is considered an asset.
- Familiarity with analytics and the ability to glean actionable insights from data to inform programming decisions.
SALARY: This position is classified as an Audio Editor in Group C of the Editorial Collective Agreement.
Please note that this role and the Audio Hub venture are initiated under the New Venture language in our Editorial Collective Agreement with Local 87M of the Communications, Energy and Paperworkers Union of Canada.
