About the Role

We are a privately held investment and operating platform that owns and operates real estate assets across seniors housing, multi-family residential, retail, hotel, and fuel service businesses. Our portfolio spans multiple jurisdictions and is managed with a long-term ownership mindset focused on disciplined capital stewardship, operational excellence, and institutional-grade financial reporting.

We are seeking a Controller to support the finance function, oversee day-to-day accounting operations, and work closely with senior leadership as the platform continues to scale. This role is well-suited for a high-caliber accounting professional ready to step into a broader, hands-on leadership position within an owner-operator environment.

Key Responsibilities

Financial Oversight & Coordination

Oversee accounting operations across multiple retirement home locations, ensuring consistent processes and strong internal controls.
Provide oversight of head office financial operations related to cost recovery and cost allocation, ensuring accurate distribution of shared services, management fees, and centralized expenses to each retirement home.
Review and validate financial data submitted by each site for accuracy and completeness.
Coordinate and oversee EFT runs for resident accounts receivable, ensuring accurate billing, timely withdrawals, and proper reconciliation of payments.

Payroll Oversight & Compliance

· Oversee payroll runs for 1,000+ employees across union and non-union groups in multiple provinces, ensuring accuracy and compliance with:

Provincial employment standards (primarily Ontario ESA)
Collective agreements
Company policies
Provincial tax and statutory requirements
Oversee the validation of time and attendance data, premiums, shift differentials, overtime, vacation, statutory holidays, and leaves.

· Coordinate with the payroll associate and site managers to resolve discrepancies in timesheets, scheduling, or pay-related issues.

· Oversee benefits and pension administration, including WSIB, EHT, and source-deduction remittances.

· Maintain vacation, statutory holiday pay, and employment standards records in accordance with applicable requirements.

Month-End Close & Reporting

Lead the month‑end close process for assigned locations, including journal entries, accruals, reconciliations, and variance analysis.
Oversee and coordinate head office financial statements, ensuring cost allocations, recoveries, and shared service charges are properly recorded and supported.
Prepare consolidated financial statements and management reports for the VP of Finance & Accounting.
Analyze and explain material variances, collaborating with site leadership to understand operational drivers.

Process Improvement & Compliance

Develop, implement, and maintain standardized accounting procedures across all retirement home locations and head office.
Monitor compliance with internal controls, corporate policies, and regulatory requirements relevant to senior living operations.
Identify opportunities to streamline workflows and improve accuracy, efficiency, and transparency.

Support to VP of Finance & Accounting

Provide analytical support, financial insights, and operational recommendations.
Assist with budgeting, forecasting, and long‑range financial planning.
Support audits, regulatory filings, and special projects as assigned.

Training & Staff Support

Provide guidance, training, and ongoing support to on‑site administrative/accounting personnel.
Troubleshoot accounting issues and ensure staff understand expectations, timelines, and best practices.
Build strong working relationships with site leadership teams.

Qualifications

Current CPA designation is an asset (CPA Ontario or equivalent Canadian provincial CPA).
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
7+ years of progressive accounting experience with exposure to payroll processing, ideally in multi‑site or multi‑entity environments.
4+ years of management experience. Experience working with unionized workforces and interpreting collective agreements is an asset.
Experience in senior living, healthcare, property management, or hospitality is an asset.
Strong understanding of internal controls and financial reporting.
Experience with Yardi and QuickBooks is an asset.
Excellent communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with non‑finance staff.
Proficiency with accounting systems and advanced Excel skills.
Strong analytical mindset, attention to detail, and ability to manage competing priorities.
