As a member of the Madsen Group, Madsen Controls & Engineering represents Woodward, Testo, and other top-tier brands for Western Canada. We provide sales and service of electronic and hydraulic governors and control systems for engines and turbines in a variety of applications and provide custom power management solutions to end-users. Madsen also provides in-house engineering and design for the advanced power systems we commission and support, allowing for tight integration between controls design, protection schemes, and field execution.
Position Summary
We are seeking a senior, field-proven Electrical Engineer or Power Systems Specialist with deep expertise in generator controls and power management systems, specifically Woodward and Basler platforms (or equivalent).
This role is focused on real-world execution—commissioning, troubleshooting, and optimizing systems across the full spectrum of complexity:
- Standalone isochronous generator control systems
- Multi-generator load sharing and load shedding plants
- Utility synchronization and grid intertie systems
- Closed/open transition transfer schemes
- Advanced power management and microgrid controls
This is not a narrow or design-only role. You will be expected to confidently execute across simple to highly complex systems and understand how they behave under real operating conditions.
You will take ownership from late-stage project involvement through commissioning, optimization, and client handover, working directly on live, mission-critical systems across multiple industries. A portion of this role includes in-house hands-on controls programming, system integration, internal quality control and testing, and customer-witnessed factory acceptance testing (FAT) of completed systems. This work provides significant involvement across the entire project lifecycle.
What Sets You Apart
- You have commissioned systems ranging from single-unit controls to complex multi-generator plants
- You have hands-on experience with generator controls, excitation systems, and protection schemes
- You are comfortable working on live systems in high-pressure environments
- You understand not just system design, but real-world system behaviour and failure modes
- You have a proven ability to diagnose and resolve complex issues in the field
- You are a self-directed technical expert who also collaborates effectively with a team
- You apply practical, experience-driven solutions to complex problems
Why This Role
- Work on mission-critical power infrastructure
- High level of technical autonomy and ownership
- Balanced field and office responsibilities
- Minimal bureaucracy—focus on execution and problem-solving
- Opportunity to operate as a senior specialist and trusted expert
- Collaborative environment with experienced technical peers
Primary Responsibilities
- Plan and execute commissioning activities in coordination with project teams
- Program, commission, and troubleshoot generator, excitation, and protection control systems (Woodward, Basler, or equivalent)
- Execute complex system startups, including:
- Generator paralleling and synchronization
- Load sharing and load shedding schemes
- Utility intertie and grid synchronization
- Islanded and microgrid operations
- Diagnose and resolve issues on live operating systems
- Perform system tuning, optimization, and fault analysis
- Support retrofits, upgrades, and system integrations
- Contribute to system assessments, upgrade scoping, and design support
- Develop and review test procedures, commissioning reports, and control narratives
- Act as a senior technical interface with clients, operators, and internal teams
QualificationsRequired
- Legally authorized to work in Canada (no sponsorship available)
- Electrical Engineering degree, diploma, or equivalent experience
- 5+ years of hands-on field commissioning experience with generator control and power management systems
- Proven ability to independently program, commission, troubleshoot, and optimize systems
- Strong understanding of:
- Power system behavior
- Synchronization and load sharing
- Protection schemes and real-world system response
- Experience with Woodward, Basler, or comparable control platforms
- Strong communication skills in field and client-facing environments
- Willingness and ability to travel within Western Canada
Preferred
- Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation in good standing with a Canadian regulatory body
- 8–12+ years of relevant field experience
- Experience with protection relays and coordination schemes
- Background working with industrial or utility clients
- Experience with generator, engine, or industrial control systems
Work Environment & Travel
- Combination of field and office-based work
- Estimated travel: 30–50%, primarily within Western Canada
- Typical schedule when not in the field: Monday–Friday, 8-hour days
- Overtime as required during commissioning and field activities
- Work involves active industrial sites and live electrical systems
Compensation
- Competitive salary: $55 - $65/ hr base, based on experience
- Overtime and premium compensation as applicable
- Comprehensive benefits package
- Travel costs covered by employer
