Working as part of a collaborative and highly skilled team, you will play a key role in advancing Nova Scotia’s commitments to monitor, prevent, and reduce air pollution, while supporting long-term environmental and economic sustainability.
In this role, you will contribute to the continuous improvement of the Province’s air regulatory program by developing, evaluating, and implementing modern, efficient, and risk-based regulations, policies, standards, and guidance. A core focus will be enhancing regulatory clarity and predictability for industry through the development of clear, practical guidance materials and policy approaches, helping proponents better understand requirements and improve the quality and timeliness of submissions.
You will work to strengthen linkages between air quality science, and sustainable industrial development by applying sound scientific analysis to inform policy and regulatory decision-making. This includes critically reviewing technical information, identifying emerging issues and opportunities, and recommending feasible, evidence-based solutions that balance environmental, economic, and government priorities.
A key aspect of your work will involve engaging directly with industry proponents, partners, and stakeholders to support compliance and foster a responsive, service-oriented regulatory environment. You will translate complex scientific and technical information into clear, plain-language advice to improve understanding and outcomes for a wide range of audiences.
You will provide expert advice on air and noise-related components of environmental assessments, including emission inventories, dispersion modelling, and mitigation measures. You may also support the review of industrial approvals, air emission reports, and modelling studies to ensure alignment with regulatory requirements and best practices.
In addition, you will develop and deliver briefing materials, guidance, and training to internal and external audiences, helping to build capacity and improve consistency in program delivery. You will liaise across government and with external partners, demonstrating an understanding of cross-departmental priorities and contributing to coordinated, effective policy and regulatory outcomes.
You have a bachelor’s degree in a related science or engineering field with six years of relevant experience focused on air quality management and/or regulation. An equivalent combination of training and experience will also be considered. As the successful candidate, you will have expert level knowledge of environmental legislation, air pollution regulation & economic impacts, as well as scientific principles involving air chemistry, health, science, and air monitoring & mitigation technology. An understanding of noise propagation and mitigation, odour management, ozone depleting substances, and the Nova Scotia energy environment, would be beneficial in this role.
You will also be adept at complex problem solving, balancing multiple priorities and incorporating multiple viewpoints into your issue analyses (e.g. environmental, social, economic, political, etc.) with an ability to demonstrate creativity and systematic analysis in solution formulation. You are able to identify risks and benefits and can articulate them with respect to any proposals. You also have effective interactive communication skills (speaking, listening, writing, presenting). Lastly, you are self-motivated, able to work independently, and have the ability to lead and/or work effectively in teams. You know when to ask for help.
In addition to having the experience above, you are detail oriented, accurate, and organized within your work and have the ability to make timely, independent judgement calls, when necessary, acting with transparency and integrity.

Pay Grade: PR 17
Salary Range: $3,410.48 - $4,005.58 Bi-Weekly
