Program and Legal Support Worker

Community Legal Assistance Services for Saskatoon Inner City Inc. (CLASSIC) seeks to hire a Program and Legal Support Worker for our office at 123 20th Street West in Saskatoon. Reporting to the Director of Programs and Operations, this is a full time, permanent position.
The Program and Legal Support Worker will assist CLASSIC and its community by providing client-centered administrative support, front-line reception, legal assistance and supports to the lawyers, and assistance with applications to the programs through our clinic.

CLASSIC is committed to social justice, decolonization, and the dignity of all people. CLASSIC provides free legal services, programming, and support for people who experience poverty and injustice. In addition, CLASSIC is an internationally recognized clinical legal education site for law and interdisciplinary students.
The Position
The successful candidate will be a generalist who is comfortable working with the community CLASSIC serves, and in an office setting. They will increase CLASSIC’s internal capacity and will:
· Serve as a primary, client-focused point of contact, providing support and assistance both in person and over the phone,
· Meet with potential clients to conduct applications for CLASSIC’s services,
· Respond to general inquiries about CLASSIC’s services,
· schedule the appointments for the Legal Advice Clinic (LAC) – a summary advice clinic with volunteer lawyers from Saskatoon who advise self-represented/unrepresented individuals. The successful candidate will complete applications and schedule appointments.
· Collaborate with lawyers to ensure applications are complete and assessed in a reasonable time,
· Assist lawyers with administrative tasks such as sending registered mail, photocopying, faxing, filing documents at the court, draft opening, closing, and denial letters as examples.
· Open files in CLASSIC’s client database and make hardcopy files and respond to questions about denial letters, and
· Front desk coverage
Other Responsibilities
· Assist with general facilities upkeep, including tasks such as snow removal, window cleaning, sweeping the front entrance, maintaining parking lot cleanliness, identifying, and addressing maintenance issues, and keeping storage rooms and other areas organized.
· Support the planning and coordination of in-house social events, fundraisers, and gatherings and may be required to actively participate as a member of the CLASSIC Social Events Committee.
· Other duties as assigned.
The Person
The ideal candidate will have an Administrative Assistant, Legal Assistant or related diploma and 1-2 years’ working experience, or related work experience and a commitment to the community.
The successful candidate will also have:
· Strong interpersonal and relationship-building skills,
· Excellent computer skills in word processing, database management, and electronic communication software,
· The ability to help trouble shoot technical issues in a fast-paced office setting,
· Exceptional attention to detail and commitment to quality work,
· Strong written and oral communication skills,
· Ability to work from a client-centered perspective with a focus on client service that is anti-oppressive and anti-racist, with clients from various backgrounds,
· Interest, knowledge of and appreciation for CLASSIC’s commitment to Indigenous peoples and addressing the realities of Canada’s colonial history,
· Interest and comfort working with newcomer communities
· Ability and motivation to work independently, and
· Ability to be a collaborative team-member.
CLASSIC offers a competitive compensation and benefits package. The successful candidate will work 37.5 hours/week, with 2.5 hours (half hour paid, half hour not paid) lunch included. The pay range is between $22.86 - $26.09 per hour depending on education and experience.
