Full job description

Position Title: Settlement Worker – Canada Summer Jobs (CSJ)
Location: 355 Church Street, Unit 201, Toronto, ON, and 489 Queen Street East, Toronto ON, with the possibility of working at any of our other locations. This role also requires work within the community including refugee shelters, libraries, hotels and community centers.
Hours: Full-time, In-person
Classification: Temporary (8 weeks)
Rate of Pay: $17.60/hour
Number of Openings: 2
Reporting to: Manager, Settlement Programs

Position Summary:
The Settlement Worker will provide needs assessment and referrals to appropriate services and programs based upon the clients’ identified needs and goals. Will also provide information and awareness services to support and assist them in coping with the problems and issues related to everyday living, being in a new country and Community, (i.e. housing, transportation, language, government, community, social and health services, rights and obligations, etc.).

Eligibility Criteria:
Employees must be between 15-30 years, either be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident or a person to whom refugee protection has been conferred and be legally entitled to work in Canada. International students and work permit holders are ineligible for the program.

Key Responsibilities:

Operate within and ensure team adherence to a Sustainable Livelihoods Framework: The framework focuses on understanding the context that creates and perpetuates a client’s vulnerability to poverty, to support more active, strategic interventions. It focuses on a client’s assets rather than deficits. Assets can range from access to the basics of food, finances, and shelter to social networks to individual skill and knowledge to self-confidence, self-esteem, and personal resilience
Organize, plan and facilitate group sessions to address diverse clients’ needs.
Develop and implement community outreach plans to promote our settlement services to asylum claimants.
Provide appropriate and useful information, orientation and support based upon each client’s identified needs to assist and support them in understanding and accessing services, in making informed decisions about their settlement, and to help them transition in settling and understanding life in Canada and our community.
Provide appropriate and timely referrals to a wide range of community and government services and resources relevant to each client’s identified needs, challenges and goals.
Provide assistance with form filling, informal counselling, interpretation/translation, advocacy and support as needed.
Follow-up and monitor client’s progress, providing additional support and services, as needed.
Plan, organize, conduct and evaluate information/education workshops for newcomers, as assigned, as per funder criteria.
Create and maintain up-to-date client files and records.
Maintain and input client data and services into statistical/data systems, as per Agency and funder criteria and best practices.
Identify and regularly report on client profiles, program trends, needs and gaps in services.
Prepare and submit monthly client and program progress reports, as required by the funder and agency to the Settlement Manager.
Assist with client surveys, evaluation of service and satisfaction.
Develop and maintain effective community collaborative relationships and/or programming.
Provide settlement counselling services, including assessment, information and referral, settlement plans, case management and service at NEW offices and other community partner locations when needed.
Provide case management and supportive follow-up.

Team Contributions and Expectations:

Committed to the contribution toward program targets and outcomes as defined by the funders, upholding organization’s mission/vision.
Participate in training of new staff, practicum students and volunteers as required.
Attend workshops and training as recommended by NEW.
Take an active role in the upkeep of staff areas and offices.
Participate on committees as needed.

Minimum Requirements

A bachelor’s degree in social services, social work, settlement or a relevant field is required.
1-3 years of experience working as a Settlement Worker is required.
Second language required (e.g Spanish, Arabic, Ukrainian, Urdu, Mandarin, Dari or Farsi)
Knowledge of the newcomer settlement sector with a good understanding of challenges faced by asylum claimants is required.
Prior experience in delivering and facilitating Orientation to Ontario (O2O) is an asset. O2O provides access to standardized information about settling in Ontario and connecting newcomers to community services shortly after arrival. Topics covered include healthcare, education, housing and working in Canada.
Demonstrated competence to work with challenging behaviour and stressful situations and possess effective conflict and crisis management skills.
Demonstrated knowledge and skills in assessment, engagement, and case management.
Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills and ability to set effective personal boundaries with both clients and co-workers.
Proven ability to problem-solve, multi-task and work both independently and as an effective team member.
Excellent word processing and computer skills, specifically in MS Office (Word, Excel, Publisher, PowerPoint, Outlook).
Knowledge of OCMS data-based systems is an asset.
Vulnerable Sector Background Check / Clearance is required.
Valid Ontario driver’s license and access to a vehicle are required
This position requires working on evenings, weekends and in the community from satellite offices, in shelters, hotels, community centers and other locations across Ontario.
