Position Summary
The Casual Industrial Firefighter / Emergency Medical Responder is responsible for providing emergency response, fire suppression, medical standby, rescue services, hazard mitigation, and safety support to industrial clients and emergency response operations throughout Alberta and Western Canada.
Successful candidates will work in physically demanding environments, often under challenging weather conditions and operational pressures. Personnel must maintain a high level of professionalism, fitness, teamwork, and commitment to safety.
This is a casual position with deployment opportunities based on operational requirements and employee availability.
Key ResponsibilitiesEmergency Response
- Respond to industrial fire emergencies and rescue incidents
- Perform fire suppression operations utilizing handlines, pumps, and firefighting equipment
- Participate in wildland firefighting operations when required
- Conduct scene assessments and hazard identification
- Support emergency incident stabilization efforts
Medical Standby Services
- Provide medical standby coverage at industrial worksites
- Deliver emergency patient care within scope of certification
- Complete patient documentation and incident reports
- Coordinate with EMS and healthcare providers when required
Rescue Operations
- Participate in confined space rescue operations
- Assist with vehicle extrication incidents
- Support technical rescue activities
- Operate rescue tools and equipment safely
Fire Station and Equipment Operations
- Conduct daily apparatus and equipment inspections
- Maintain firefighting equipment and PPE
- Assist with inventory control and station readiness
- Complete required documentation and reports
Safety and Compliance
- Follow all company Standard Operating Guidelines
- Comply with Alberta Occupational Health and Safety legislation
- Adhere to client safety requirements and site procedures
- Participate in ongoing safety meetings and training
Physical Demands
This position requires candidates to be physically capable of performing strenuous emergency response activities, including:
- Wearing firefighting PPE and SCBA for extended periods
- Operating in extreme weather conditions
- Working in high-stress emergency environments
- Lifting, carrying, dragging, and moving equipment weighing up to 45 kg (100 lbs.)
- Climbing ladders and working at heights
- Operating in confined spaces and low-visibility conditions
- Performing physically demanding tasks while carrying approximately 22 kg (50 lbs.) of protective equipment
A physician's medical clearance may be required before employment.
Minimum Qualifications
Applicants must possess:
Firefighter Applicants
- NFPA 1001 Level I and/or Level II
- NFPA 1072 or NFPA 472 Hazardous Materials Awareness and Operations
- Current CPR Certification
- ICS 100
- Valid Alberta Driver's License
- Standard First Aid, EMR, or higher medical certification
Medical Applicants
- EMR, PCP, ACP, or equivalent certification
- Current registration with the Alberta College of Paramedics
- Current CPR Certification
- Valid Driver's License
Additional Required Certifications
- H2S Alive
- WHMIS
- TDG
- CSO (Common Safety Orientation)
Preferred Qualifications
The following certifications and experience are considered strong assets:
- Class 1, 2, or 3 Driver's License
- Air Brake Endorsement (Q)
- Pump Operations
- Apparatus Driver Operator
- Rope Rescue
- Ice Rescue
- Fire Instructor Certifications
- Fire Officer Certifications
- Wildland Fire Training
- Previous industrial emergency response experience
- Oil and gas industry experience
- Technical trade background
