The Role
The Merchandise Processing Team Member plays a critical role in preparing high-quality donated items for the sales floor. Responsible for sorting, inspecting, tagging, and organizing merchandise, this team member ensures that products meet Talize’s quality and presentation standards. Working in a fast-paced, back-of-house environment, the role supports store readiness, inventory flow, and the overall customer experience. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, physically capable, and committed to maintaining a clean, safe, and efficient processing area. As a core part of the store’s operations team, this role contributes directly to Talize’s mission of sustainability, value, and community impact.
Availability Requirements
Full Time Availability Requirement:
Candidates are required to have open availability between 7:30am to 5:30pm from Monday to Friday with a possibility of having shifts during weekends, holidays, and closing shifts.
What the Role Owns
- Perform quality inspections on incoming merchandise to identify rips, stains, odors, and other issues that make items unsellable.
- Properly dispose of unsellable merchandise and sort acceptable items into appropriate sub-department bins.
- Tag, grade, and price items accurately following standards and company guidelines.
- Hang inspected garments on the correct hangers and place them on the designated lines.
- Organize tagged merchandise onto rolling racks by category, size, and colour.
- Maintain an organized, clean, and hazard-free processing area that meets company housekeeping standards.
- Wear PPE at all times and follow safety procedures when lifting, handling, or processing merchandise.
- Collaborate with peers and leadership to ensure continuous merchandise flow and backstock replenishment.
- Assist with floor changes, sale day preparation, and in-store stock replenishment.
- Roll racks to the retail floor and assist with general housekeeping (removing hangers, correcting misplaced items, etc.).
What the Role Executes
- Accurately sort and categorize merchandise to align with sub-department guidelines and inventory needs.
- Ensure department bins are clearly labeled with vendor code, date, and product weight.
- Follow colour tag ragging routines to maintain stock rotation and floor readiness.
- Participate in daily workflow routines, including pricing, tagging, grading, and organizing merchandise on racks.
- Complete tasks to support processing speed and efficiency while maintaining quality control standards.
- Identify and report safety hazards or incidents to management and the Joint Health & Safety Committee.
- Adhere to lifting protocols and use equipment safely to minimize risk of injury.
- Maintain cleanliness and safe access throughout processing areas at all times.
- Support donation flow and back-stock organization as directed by supervisors.
- Participate in team huddles and communicate effectively with fellow team members and leadership.

Education, Experience and Requirements
Must have:
- Strong attention to detail and consistency

Good to have:
- Previous experience in inventory processing, warehouse, or back-of-house retail operations.
- Knowledge of second-hand or thrift merchandise categories (e.g., clothing types, condition grading).
- Familiarity with PPE usage and basic health & safety standards.
Physical Requirements and Work Environment
While performing the responsibilities of the job, the Team Member is required to stand and walk for the duration of their shift. Team Members are required to be able to lift and carry up to and including 50 lbs, and pushing and pulling merchandise containers on wheels weighing up to 500 lbs. Constant standing, bending, reaching, twisting, lifting, pushing, pulling, and moving items is required.
While performing the duties of this job, the Team member is exposed to dust, dirt, insects, garbage, and rodents throughout their designated shift. The working environment can be noisy at times, with periodic temperature fluctuations and noise levels. Working hours includes days, evenings, weekends, and holidays. Team Members interact with customers, clients, and the public.
