We’re currently recruiting for a full-time, permanent Mechanical Systems Engineer.
POSITION OVERVIEW
Reporting to the Mechanical Systems Technical Lead and working closely with the New Construction and High-Performance Buildings team, the Mechanical Systems Engineer will be responsible for working with the design community in the commercial, institutional, and multi-unit residential building sectors, focusing on energy efficient building design and functional and operational commissioning in support of high-performance buildings.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Perform and oversee reviews of whole-building energy models for new construction and retrofit building projects, including evaluating general conformance to and consistency with applicable energy codes and program requirements through the review of construction drawing and product/equipment details.
- Provide technical support to commercial sector programs including (but not limited to) the New Buildings, Commercial Deep Energy Retrofit, Commercial Energy Audit, Custom Energy Solutions, and prescriptive HVAC programs. Support activities include review of engineering calculations and energy modelling simulations, drawings, equipment specifications and other materials related to program applications as well as preparation of calculations related to energy savings and incentives.
- Provide technical support for the development of new incentive offers for Manitobans.
- Provide technical support for the review and development of educational materials and presentations to both internal and external parties relating to programs and energy efficiency opportunities in commercial, institutional and multi-unit residential buildings.
- Provide technical support towards planning and external evaluation of incentive programs, including research, review, development and maintenance of claimed savings methodology and technical reference materials.
- Respond to participant inquiries as they relate to program technical issues.
- Be actively engaged in the building industry to understand market forces to be considered in the development and enhancement of programs.
- Undertake periodic site meetings and building walkthroughs to meet with prospective program applicants and discuss opportunities for energy efficiency upgrades and project eligibility.
- Serve as an Efficiency Manitoba liaison in providing technical and educational support for the development, evolution and adoption of high-performance building codes, regulations, guidelines, and standards at the local and national level.
- Establish and maintain close working relationships with building design professionals (e.g., architects and engineers), associations, authorities having jurisdiction (AHJs) and trade allies within the design and construction industry.
- Develop and deliver industry educational presentations on program offers, energy efficient systems and buildings, and whole-building energy modelling at seminars, workshops, and training sessions for internal staff and external stakeholders.
- Maintain and enhance building systems and energy modelling technical knowledge and expertise through professional and educational development.
- Participate as an active/contributing member to industry associations to promote high performance buildings and systems, and to encourage participation in programs.
- May occasionally be required to travel to and/or attend meetings, seminars, conferences, etc. outside of normal working hours.
REQUIREMENTS
- Graduate in Mechanical Engineering from a university of recognized standing with a minimum of four (4) years of related engineering design and construction experience.
- Eligible for registration with Engineers Geoscientists Manitoba as a Professional Engineer.
- Demonstrated knowledge and a minimum of two (2) years of experience related to building mechanical systems and energy efficiency, including energy analysis and savings calculations for commercial retrofit and new construction projects.
- Demonstrated experience in the design, review, and/or evaluation of commercial HVAC mechanical systems and associated control/monitoring systems (including BAS/BMS), including experience identifying energy efficiency opportunities.
- Demonstrated experience in the review, development, or application of building energy models for new construction and/or existing building retrofit projects, including interpretation of results relative to applicable codes, standards, and program requirements.
- Specialized working knowledge of building energy modelling software such as eQUEST, CAN-QUEST, EnergyPlus, Integrated Environmental Solutions (IES) VE, Trane Trace, and/or Carrier Hourly Analysis Program (HAP).
- Experience in assessing existing building and system energy usage and performance, including (but not limited to) utility history analysis, whole-building energy model calibration, on-site energy audits (e.g. ASHRAE) and assessments, etc. is an asset.
- Experience with building commissioning, recommissioning, or system optimization activities, including interpretation of functional testing, control sequences, and systems performance data, is considered an asset.
- Working knowledge of building automation and control systems, energy monitoring systems, and emerging building technologies such as air and ground source heat pumps, thermal storage, demand response, or renewable energy systems is considered an asset.
- Certifications in energy efficiency and sustainability fields such as CEM®, CMVP®, BEMP, LEED®, BCxP or EBCx, CEA, and/or others are assets.
- Working knowledge of the National Energy Code for Buildings and Manitoba amendments.
- Familiarity with ASHRAE and CSA standards related to building systems and energy efficiency.
- Experience with natural gas and electricity rates as used to perform savings calculations for energy efficiency measures in buildings.
- Proven ability to independently plan, organize and manage multiple projects in specific areas of responsibility involving a high degree of specialization while meeting deadlines and commitments.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to build and maintain relationships with customers, consultants and trade allies.
- Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate complex technical information to a range of audiences, including customers, consultants, contractors, and internal stakeholders.
- Proficient in Microsoft 365 suite of software.
- Must possess a valid Manitoba driver’s license.

The starting salary for this position will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. The salary range for this position is $80,030.32 to $110,430.58 annually.
