Job Overview
The Sr. HR Compliance Specialist plays a critical enterprise role, providing guidance on employee relations investigations and compliance matters across multiple manufacturing and distribution sites. This position partners closely with HR, Plant Leadership, Legal, and Compliance to manage sensitive cases (with a primary focus on harassment, discrimination, and other Code of Conduct matters), mitigate organizational risk, and ensure consistent, defensible outcomes aligned with policy and legislation.
This is a hands-on, high-impact role that requires sound judgment, discretion, and the ability to operate confidently in complex, fast-paced, and high-risk environments. The successful incumbent will need to have sound knowledge in applicable law and policy, including relevant employment, harassment and human rights law relevant to workplace investigations across Ontario.
Key Responsibilities
Employee Relations & Investigation Oversight
- Conduct a high volume of sensitive and complex workplace investigations, including harassment, discrimination, and Code of Conduct matters, in accordance with applicable laws, policies, and best practices. This includes reaching appropriate defensible conclusions in accordance with applicable employment-related legislation and evolving employment and human rights case law. Develop and execute structured investigation plans, including interviews, document review, evidence analysis, and findings.
- Effectively communicate investigative findings, policy applications, and related recommendations to HR Business Partners and legal counsel, both in writing and verbally. Will prepare clear, comprehensive, and defensible investigation reports with conclusions, risk assessments, and recommended actions.
- Serve as a trusted advisor to HR Business Partners, HR Leaders, and site leadership on complex and sensitive ER matters.
- Support legal proceedings as required by partnering with internal and external counsel and preparing relevant documentation.
- Travel regularly to plant and distribution locations to conduct onsite investigations and stakeholder interviews.
Strategic ER Leadership
- Provide enterprise-level employee relations leadership across multiple Canadian manufacturing and distribution sites, with limited U.S. exposure.
- Identify trends, systemic risks, and recurring ER themes; recommend proactive interventions, policy enhancements, and capability-building initiatives.
- Monitor ER KPIs, case metrics, and outcomes; deliver data-driven insights and executive-level reporting.
- Maintain and govern discipline frameworks to ensure consistency and fairness across sites.
- Collaborate with key internal stakeholders to identify opportunities to streamline investigation processes, improve efficiency, and enhance overall effectiveness.
- Develop and participate in the delivery of workplace investigation training/ professional development opportunities to new investigators and others who conduct workplace investigations at Give & Go.
Compliance & Governance
- Ensure all ER matters are managed in alignment with company policies, standard operating procedures, and applicable legislation.
- Act as the primary liaison with the Compliance and Ethics (Speak Up) team, including case reporting, tracking, and closure.
- Maintain accurate, confidential, and secure ER records in line with privacy and record-retention standards.
- Prepare corrective action documentation in collaboration with HR and Legal partners.
- Maintain strong working knowledge of Canadian employment legislation, with awareness of relevant U.S. employment considerations.
The Recipe for Success
Required
- University degree in Human Resources or a related field.
- Minimum of six (6) years of Human Resources experience, including at least five (5) years focused on employee relations and investigations.
- Demonstrated experience conducting complex workplace investigations, including high-risk and high-sensitivity matters.
- Appropriate familiarity with applicable employment law and relevant legislation, including human rights, harassment, and discrimination. Excellent written and verbal communication skills, particularly in drafting investigation reports and findings. Strong analytical and judgment capabilities, with the ability to manage risk and make sound, defensible decisions.
- People leadership experience would be an asset, particularly experience mentoring or guiding others.
Preferred
- Experience in food manufacturing or a large, multinational organization.
- Paralegal diploma or equivalent.
- CHRP, CHRL, SHRM-CP, or SHRM-SCP designation.
- Exposure to U.S. employment legislation.
