Full job description

The Education Director is a visionary leader responsible for the total organization, management, and strategic administration of the Keewaywin education system. Reporting directly to the Chief and Council / Education Board, you will provide executive oversight to early childhood education, the community Band School (K-8/K-12), and post-secondary/adult learning navigation.

The successful candidate will blend robust fiscal and administrative management with a deep commitment to preserving and promoting First Nations language, culture, and traditions. You will serve as the primary liaison between the community, Indigenous Services Canada (ISC), the Ontario Ministry of Education, and neighboring provincial school boards.

Key Responsibilities

System & Educational Leadership

Provide strategic direction and annual planning for all school programs, ensuring they meet the community’s academic needs and provincial curriculum standards.
mplement a holistic curriculum that seamlessly integrates Anishinaabe culture, land-based learning, and local language instruction.
Foster a safe, inclusive, welcoming, and high-performing learning environment for both students and staff.

Fiscal & Operations Management

Develop, monitor, and manage the annual Education Department budget, ensuring maximum financial accountability and efficient resource allocation.
Oversee the preparation and timely submission of all compliance and funding reports required by Indigenous Services Canada (ISC) and other grant bodies.
Actively identify and write proposals for new government grants, programs, and educational initiatives.

Personnel & HR Oversight

Supervise, mentor, and evaluate school administration teams, including Principals, Daycare Supervisors, and Education Coordinators.
Oversee recruitment, retention, and ongoing professional development strategies to combat northern staffing challenges.

Community Relations & Advocacy

Act as a strong advocate for community students by negotiating and monitoring Tuition Agreements and Education Service Contracts with regional Provincial School Boards.
Maintain regular, transparent communication with parents, Elders, Chief and Council, and community stakeholders through regular Education Advisory meetings.

Qualifications & Requirements

Education: Master’s Degree in Education, Public/Business Administration, or a related field is highly preferred. A Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) with equivalent senior administrative experience will be considered.

Certifications: Ontario Certificate of Qualification (OCT) and Principal’s Qualifications (PQP) are strong assets.

Experience: Minimum of 5 years of progressively responsible senior management experience, preferably within a First Nation education system or Indigenous organization.

Knowledge Base:

Deep understanding of First Nations education funding models, structures, and federal/provincial policies.
Strong familiarity with the cultural, geographical, and socioeconomic contexts of Northwestern Ontario First Nations.

Clearances: A current Criminal Record Check with a Vulnerable Sector Screening (VSS) is mandatory.

Core Competencies

Cultural Competence: Deep respect for, and knowledge of, Anishinaabe culture, values, beliefs, and traditions.

Financial Acumen: Proven experience managing multi-million dollar budgets with diverse funding streams.

Relationship Builder: Exceptional communication and conflict-resolution skills to navigate complex tribal council, provincial, and community dynamics.
