Full job description

Location: Onoway
Hours: Monday - Thursday, 6:00 AM - 4:30 PM

Job Purpose

The Safety Advisor is accountable for the implementation and shop execution of Academy's health and safety management system across all sites. This includes ensuring policies, procedures, training, and communications are current, understood, and consistently applied. The Safety Advisor ensures legislative compliance under the Alberta OHS Act, Regulation, and Code, and owns the corrective action process from identification through to verified close-out.

Core Responsibilities

Maintain a visible, active presence across all shop areas through scheduled and unscheduled inspections, worker engagement, and supervisory coaching
Lead incident investigations including root cause analysis, formal documentation, and corrective action close-out; support supervisors in the investigation process
Lead and maintain site hazard assessments, ensuring accuracy as scope, personnel, and work conditions change
Ensure all FLHAs, JHAs, SWPs, and related hazard control documents are current, accessible, and being applied correctly in the field
Maintain COR compliance and audit readiness at all times, including documentation, field verification, and internal audit preparation/completion
Track and report leading and lagging safety indicators: TRIF, near miss frequency, inspection completion rates, and corrective action closure timelines
Conduct and support orientations, in-house safety training; manage worker competency and certification compliance
Intervene immediately in unsafe conditions;
Support internal and external audits

Operational Duties

Conduct scheduled inspections of tools, equipment, lifting devices, mobile equipment, and PPE; document findings and track corrective actions to close-out
Lead subcontractor onboarding, site orientation, and ongoing compliance verification against Academy and legislative HSE requirements
Collect, review, and action BBO cards in coordination with supervisors; track corrective actions to completion
Verify bump test logs, PPE issuance records, and equipment inspection and maintenance compliance
Assist with ERP processes and drills
Attend morning/toolbox meetings and management meetings; assist with safety talking points and statistical reporting
Ensure all safety records, training, inspections, incidents, corrective actions are complete, accurate, and entered into Academy's safety platform within required timelines

Qualifications

3-7+ years of experience in industrial, construction, or fabrication environments
Completion of a 2-year diploma, or University certification program in Occupational Health and Safety is preferred
Previous trades experience, or work within the metal fabrication industry is considered an asset
NCSO certified
ACSA Certified Internal Auditor
Train-the-Trainer courses are not required, but considered an asset
Respirator Fit Tester certificate is not required, but considered an asset

Skills

Strong ability to influence and lead others at all levels in the organization
In-depth knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems

Working Conditions

The incumbent is required to work in an office environment with moderate noise. The job will require the incumbent to walk stairs; be outside in inclement weather (heat, rain, snow, cold, slippery/icy surfaces); carrying objects, driving and being exposed to normal office and fabrication shop routines.

Physical Requirements

The incumbent is required to perform frequent walking and standing throughout the workday, with regular sitting to attend meetings, conduct training courses and complete computer-related tasks. Close visual acuity is required for activities such as reviewing documents, analyzing information, reading, and working at a computer terminal.
