Full job description

Legalbird is seeking an Associate Lawyer with at least one year of family law experience, including experience appearing in chambers before the Supreme Court of British Columbia.

This is an opportunity to independently manage meaningful family law matters from commencement through settlement or trial while working alongside a collaborative and supportive legal team.

The successful candidate will be a capable advocate, strong legal writer, practical problem-solver, and compassionate professional who can confidently guide clients through challenging and often highly personal legal disputes.

The Role

You will independently manage a family law caseload, including commencing proceedings, preparing court applications, advising clients, attending chambers, negotiating resolutions, and conducting trials where required.

Your matters may involve parenting arrangements, child and spousal support, property division, separation agreements, divorce and related interim and final applications.

Key Responsibilities

Manage family law files independently from initial instructions through resolution
Draft Notices of Family Claim, Responses to Family Claim, Counterclaims, Notices of Application, Application Responses, affidavits, written submissions, trial briefs, consent orders, and settlement agreements
Prepare and respond to interim applications before the Supreme Court of British Columbia
Attend chambers hearings, judicial case conferences, family management conferences, settlement conferences, and other court appearances
Prepare for and conduct family law trials
Provide clients with practical advice regarding strategy, procedure, settlement options, costs, and litigation risk
Negotiate directly with opposing counsel and self-represented parties
Prepare, file, and serve court materials in accordance with the Supreme Court Family Rules and Provincial Court Family Rules
Review and organize financial disclosure and other documentary evidence
Maintain responsibility for court deadlines, limitation periods, correspondence, and file progression
Communicate with clients clearly, professionally, and compassionately
Work collaboratively with lawyers, legal assistants, paralegals, and administrative staff
Maintain a professional, accountable, and approachable demeanour

Required Qualifications

Member in good standing with the Law Society of British Columbia
At least one full year of post-call legal experience
At least one year of practical family law experience
Chambers experience before the Supreme Court of British Columbia
Experience drafting pleadings, applications, affidavits, and settlement documents
Strong legal research, written advocacy and oral advocacy skills
Ability to independently manage files, deadlines, and client expectations
Sound professional judgment and the ability to handle confidential and sensitive information
Strong organization, attention to detail, and time-management skills
Clear and professional written and verbal communication
Client-centred and solutions-oriented approach
Valid driver’s licence and access to a reliable vehicle
Ability to travel to courts and Legalbird offices as required

Preferred Qualifications

Experience conducting or assisting with family law trials
Experience with both Supreme Court and Provincial Court family matters
Familiarity with LEAP
Familiarity with Clio
Familiarity with Divorcemate

Compensation and Benefits

Legalbird offers a compensation package that reflects the successful candidate’s experience, skills, and ability to manage files independently.

Salary: $60,000–$120,000 per year

Work Location and Travel

The successful candidate will be based primarily in our Delta Office.

The role may require attendance at other Legalbird offices and courthouses throughout the Lower Mainland and Fraser Valley. Accordingly, a valid driver’s licence and access to a reliable vehicle are required.
