Empringham Disposal is growing, and we’re looking for an experienced Journeyman Heavy Equipment Technician / Mechanic (HET) to join our team. This role is ideal for someone who thrives in a fast‑paced environment, understands the waste and recycling industry, and enjoys coordinating people, routes, and equipment to keep operations running smoothly.

Empringham Disposal is a growing local waste and recycling company serving communities across Central Alberta. Since 2012, we have remained 100% locally owned and operated, committed to delivering reliable, community‑focused service. Our team provides a full range of solid waste and recycling solutions, including municipal collection, roll‑off container service, commercial front‑load programs, and waste transfer operations.

Position Summary

The Journeyman Heavy Equipment Technician is responsible for inspecting, diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining a wide range of heavy-duty machinery used in construction, mining, forestry, and industrial operations. This role involves troubleshooting complex mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical systems; performing preventative maintenance; and completing component rebuilds to ensure equipment meets safety and performance standards. The technician interprets technical manuals, accurately documents all work performed, and collaborates with operators and supervisors to minimize downtime. In addition, the Journeyman provides guidance, mentorship, and active supervision of apprentices, supporting their development while promoting safe work practices, technical skill progression, and adherence to company standards.

Duties

Diagnose and troubleshoot issues across diesel, hydraulic, electrical, and related heavy equipment systems
Perform routine and preventative maintenance, including inspections, lubrication, and fluid services
Repair or replace defective components using appropriate tools and manufacturer specifications
Maintain accurate service records, including work performed and parts used
Collaborate with team members to resolve complex issues and minimize equipment downtime
Mentor, supervise, and train apprentices to support skill development and ensure safety compliance
Follow all safety policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements during maintenance and repairs
Participate in safety meetings and report incidents, near misses, and hazards promptly
Ensure all work complies with applicable provincial and federal regulations.

Education and Experience

Journeyman Heavy Equipment Technician (HET) certification from a recognized provincial or industry authority
Strong mechanical aptitude with advanced knowledge of diesel engines, hydraulic systems, and heavy equipment components, including diagnostics and repair
Extensive hands-on experience using hand and power tools in heavy-duty and automotive repair environments
Solid understanding of equipment maintenance practices, troubleshooting techniques, and industry repair standards
Ability to perform physically demanding work, including heavy lifting and repetitive tasks in a field or shop environment
Proven experience diagnosing and repairing hydraulic systems; experience with refuse or garbage collection equipment is considered an asset.

Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook, OneDrive)
Effective communication skills and a professional, customer‑focused approach when interacting with operators, supervisors, and team members.
Demonstrated reliability, punctuality, and a solid work ethic in demanding operational environments.
Flexibility to adapt to changing priorities, weather conditions, and shifting operational requirements.
Proven ability to work efficiently both independently and within a cross‑functional team to support overall operational goals.
