Full job description

Job Summary
The Haven Youth Shelter provides service with dignity to youth in need of food, shelter and other essentials. We work collaboratively to develop realistic community awareness of homelessness and provide an important link between housing, people, and the resources they need, including (but not limited to) services such as shelter, food, hygiene, life skills counseling, mental health support, addictions support, crisis support, and housing advocacy.

This position is offered on a part-time/casual basis with no guaranteed hours. Scheduling is based on operational needs, and candidates must be available to work a variety of shifts, including overnights, weekends, and statutory holidays. Reliable transportation is required, as the role includes supporting off-site responsibilities such as weekend soup kitchen shifts.

Responsibilities and Key Duties:

Implement the daily routines of the program while adhering to agency policy and program procedures.
Participate in a variety of programming responsibilities including life skill lessons, support and direction for client transition to the community.
Provide support and guidance to the clients and also to those for which the agency acts as Trustee for development of self-esteem, improved interpersonal relationships and skills for independent living.
Ensure the safety and well-being of the clients on all shifts including enforcing rules of safety, curfews, and supervising meal preparation
Provide support for other Inn of the Good Shepherd programs and assist with the placement and supervision of The Haven clients in these programs.
Perform all other necessary tasks and duties deemed appropriate by the Program Coordinator.
Ensure availability on an on-call basis.

Qualifications

University/College diploma in SSW, CYC, ECE, DSW and/or combination of education and related life experience.
Understanding and practice of the Trauma-Informed Care Approach and the Housing First Model.
Excellent oral and written communication skills and effective interpersonal skills
Competent on word processing equipment, such as Windows XP, Microsoft Office, Excel.
Ability to work with socially disadvantaged people.
Demonstrated ability to work both independently and under supervision.
Demonstrates knowledge of Community based resources.
Possess current First Aid, CPR, Non-Violent Crisis Intervention certificates.
Provide an original copy of a Criminal Records Check (CRC) with vulnerable sector screening secured through the national Canadian Police Information Centre or through a local police detachment
Support for and an understanding of the purpose and mission of The Inn of the Good Shepherd

Work Schedule

Casual relief position with shifts scheduled based on operational requirements
Availability for days, evenings, overnight shifts, weekends, and holidays may be required
Schedule may vary based on staffing and client service needs

Working Conditions

Work is performed within a youth emergency shelter environment
Frequent interaction with individuals experiencing homelessness, mental health challenges, addictions, trauma, and other barriers
Exposure to crisis situations and emotionally demanding circumstances
Frequent standing, walking, bending, lifting, and movement throughout the facility
May be required to work independently during assigned shifts

Compensation and Benefits

Hourly wage of $21.45/hr
Eligibility reviewed for HSA after 6 months of full-time employment
Contributions to group pension RRSP up to 5% matching contributions

Satisfactory Criminal Record Check and Vulnerable Sector Check required
Valid First Aid/CPR certification required or willingness to obtain
