Full job description

ABOUT THE ROLE

The Mechanic in Training will be responsible for the installation, maintenance, repair, and troubleshooting of mechanical equipment and systems within the hoist division, with primary focus on lifting systems. This role requires both precision mechanical work and problem-solving capability in a fast-paced industrial environment. This is a hands-on learning role supporting experienced technicians while building trade competency.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Mechanical alignment during maintenance and breakdown operations
Fabrication, rebuilding, and replacing of hoist parts on site
Installation, dismantling, and jumping of construction hoists, as per derived schedule
Perform preventative and corrective maintenance on hoists, lifting mechanisms, hydraulic systems, and related industrial equipment
Diagnose mechanical failures and equipment malfunctions; perform repairs or coordinate replacement of worn or damaged components
Conduct routine inspections of equipment to ensure compliance with safety standards and operational specifications
Interpret technical drawings, schematics, and work orders; communicate findings and recommendations to management
Operate hand tools, power tools, and light equipment (forklifts, pallet jacks, etc.) as required to move, position, and secure machinery
Perform welding and fabrication tasks as needed; coordinate with specialized trades when required
Maintain accurate maintenance logs and equipment records
Adhere to all workplace safety protocols, lockout/tagout procedures, and company safety standards
Contribute to yard operations organization and equipment inventory management
Support field operations and respond to urgent maintenance or breakdown calls as required

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Valid millwright apprenticeship registration or willingness to register through BC's apprenticeship program
Proficiency reading and interpreting technical drawings and blueprints
Strong troubleshooting and mechanical reasoning skills
Valid driver's license and willingness to travel for site work if required
Ability to lift and carry objects up to 50 lbs regularly

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Fall arrest certification
First aid level 1
Rigging certification or experience
Experience with hydraulic systems
Familiarity with hoist or lifting equipment operations
Experience in crane service or heavy equipment industries

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Comfortable working at heights and in confined spaces
Manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination for precision mechanical work
Ability to stand, bend, and work in various positions for extended periods
Willingness to work in variable weather and shop/yard conditions

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Field deployment for equipment installation or emergency repairs
Standard full-time hours with flexibility for shift work or on-call availability as operational needs dictate
