Position Summary
Stein Valley Nlakapamux School is seeking a motivated, caring, and enthusiastic Full-Time Physical Education Teacher to join our school community.
The successful candidate will be responsible for developing and delivering engaging Physical and Health Education programming for students from Kindergarten through Grade 12. The teacher will create opportunities for students to develop physical literacy, teamwork, confidence, leadership, healthy living habits, and a positive relationship with physical activity.
At SVNS, we value holistic, culturally relevant, land-based, and experiential learning. The successful candidate will be encouraged to connect Physical Education with the local community, outdoor environment, Indigenous perspectives, wellness, and students' interests.
The teacher will work collaboratively with classroom teachers, Educational Assistants, Language and Culture staff, administration, families, and community members.
Key ResponsibilitiesTeaching and Learning
- Plan, prepare, deliver, and assess Physical and Health Education programming for K–12 students.
- Follow the British Columbia Physical and Health Education curriculum and applicable graduation requirements.
- Develop age-appropriate activities that support physical literacy, fitness, movement, health, teamwork, leadership, and personal wellness.
- Provide instruction that is inclusive and responsive to students with different abilities, interests, learning needs, and physical capabilities.
- Adapt activities and assessments as appropriate to support students with Individual Education Plans (IEPs) and other learning needs.
- Establish clear classroom, gymnasium, field, and outdoor activity expectations.
- Teach students appropriate safety procedures and responsible use of equipment and facilities.
- Assess and communicate student learning and progress.
- Maintain appropriate records, planning documents, assessment information, and report card comments.
Outdoor and Land-Based Learning
- Develop opportunities for students to participate in outdoor education and land-based physical activities.
- Incorporate hiking, walking, running, fitness, recreation, games, outdoor skills, and other appropriate activities.
- Where appropriate, collaborate with Language and Culture staff and Knowledge Keepers to incorporate local cultural knowledge and community-based learning.
- Support students in developing respect and responsibility for the land and community.
- Plan activities with appropriate risk assessment, supervision, preparation, and safety procedures.
Student Wellness and Relationship Building
- Build positive and respectful relationships with students.
- Encourage students who may be reluctant to participate in physical activities.
- Promote confidence, resilience, teamwork, leadership, healthy choices, and personal responsibility.
- Create an environment where students feel safe, included, respected, and successful.
- Recognize that students have different physical abilities, interests, comfort levels, and experiences.
- Provide encouragement and constructive feedback rather than focusing solely on athletic ability.
School and Community Involvement
- Participate in school activities, assemblies, cultural events, community events, and special programming.
- Support school-wide wellness initiatives.
- Organize or support intramural activities, recreational opportunities, tournaments, clubs, or extracurricular activities where appropriate.
- Work collaboratively with other staff to create opportunities for students to be active beyond scheduled PE classes.
- Develop positive relationships with families and community partners.
- Contribute to a positive school culture.
Supervision and Safety
- Maintain appropriate supervision of students during all Physical Education and outdoor activities.
- Follow SVNS policies and procedures regarding student supervision, safety, field trips, land-based learning, equipment, and emergency procedures.
- Ensure gymnasium, fitness, outdoor, and recreational equipment is used appropriately and safely.
- Conduct appropriate safety checks before activities.
- Report safety concerns, injuries, incidents, or damaged equipment to administration.
- Maintain appropriate emergency preparedness during off-site and outdoor activities.
- Ensure students are not left unsupervised in gymnasiums, change areas, outdoor activity areas, or other school spaces.

- Review and follow student IEPs and applicable accommodations.
- Communicate concerns to administration in a timely and professional manner.
- Demonstrate a commitment to continuous professional learning.
- Support the school's commitment to reconciliation, Indigenous education, cultural learning, and respectful relationships.
Required Qualifications
The successful candidate should have:
- A valid BC Certificate of Qualification or an appropriate Independent School Teaching Certificate, or be eligible to obtain the appropriate BC certification for teaching in an independent school.
- A recognized teacher education program.
- A bachelor's degree or equivalent academic preparation appropriate to BC teacher certification requirements.
- Training and/or academic preparation in Physical Education, Physical and Health Education, Kinesiology, Exercise Science, Health Education, or a related field is strongly preferred.
- Demonstrated ability to teach Physical and Health Education across multiple grade levels.
- Knowledge of the BC Physical and Health Education curriculum.
- Current or eligible-to-obtain First Aid/CPR certification.
- A satisfactory Criminal Record Check as required for employment in a school setting.
- Ability to meet the professional standards and certification requirements applicable to teachers in BC.
BC certification requirements are determined by the BC Teachers Council/Teacher Regulation Branch, and independent schools have specific Independent School Teaching Certificate standards.
Preferred Qualifications and Experience
Preference may be given to candidates with:
- Experience teaching Physical Education at the elementary and/or secondary level.
- Experience teaching Grades 10–12 Physical and Health Education.
- Experience with outdoor education or land-based learning.
- Experience coaching school sports or organizing extracurricular athletic programs.
- Experience with fitness, strength and conditioning, recreation, hiking, outdoor pursuits, or adventure-based activities.
- Experience working with students with diverse learning needs.
- Experience working in an Indigenous or First Nations school/community.
- Knowledge or experience incorporating Indigenous perspectives and culturally relevant learning into Physical Education.
- Strong classroom management and student engagement skills.
- Strong communication and relationship-building skills.
- A willingness to learn from and work respectfully with the Nlakapamux community.
