Reports to: Manager, Animal Services

Works Closely With: Animal Services Team

Type of Employment: Seasonal, Contract 

Number of Vacancies: 1

Duration:  June 30th to August 29th, 2026  

Hours of Work: 35 hours per week 

Rate of Pay: $17.60 per hour

Since 1936, the Humane Society of Oakville, Milton & Halton (HSOMH) has been a safe haven for animals in need and a trusted resource for the people who care about them. We’re more than a shelter. We’re a community hub where compassion, education, and action come together to strengthen the human–animal bond.

At HSOMH, we care for approximately 300 animals at any given time, whether they are lost, rescued, or surrendered and awaiting their new beginning. Every animal that comes through our doors receives shelter, medical care, and the compassion they deserve.

People often walk through our doors expecting to adopt a pet, drop off a donation, or volunteer for a few hours. What they leave with is so much more: new connections, unexpected joy, and a lasting place in a community that cares deeply for pets and people alike.

What You'll Be Doing!

The Animal Control Officer will receive guidance and support from their manager while being expected to meet performance standards and activity levels. Their primary role is to respond to animal-related emergencies and standard calls, as well as assist in addressing public inquiries and concerns, providing information about animal control legislation and local by-laws to enhance customer service for the shelter. Additionally, they will actively participate in department activities and work closely with the Animal Services team to ensure that the goals and objectives set by HSOMH are met. An outline of the key responsibilities of this role have been listed below.

Retrieves deceased animals from roadways and parks, ensuring the proper and respectful handling of their remains.
Picking up deceased animals from roadways
Supporting the dog licensing campaign
Educating Oakville residents on licensing requirements
Transports animals to the shelter or other designated locations as instructed.
Performs any other duties as requested or assigned.

What You Bring!

High school diploma or equivalent required. Additional education in animal sciences, veterinary technology, animal welfare, criminal justice, and management is advantageous
Experienced in handling and caring for a variety of animals including knowledge of proper techniques, basic veterinary care, zoonotic risks, common animal diseases, and understanding animal behaviour and body language
Possess refined customer service skills and an ability to resolve conflict
Demonstrate a professional level of verbal and written communication skills
Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to work comfortably and effectively in a team environment
Able to function optimally in a fast-paced demanding environment
Skilled in diplomacy, tact, and maintaining confidentiality
Flexible and adaptable when handling evolving situations
Can demonstrate compassion for both animals and people
Efficient in Microsoft Office Suite
Driver’s License: Have a valid non-probationary Ontario Class ‘G’ driver’s license, in good standing.
Able to work 7 hour shifts, including weekends, holidays, and other overtime as required.

This position entails working in an animal shelter environment, where you will have regular exposure to a variety of species and sizes of animals. Candidates should be comfortable and prepared to work with and in close proximity to them.

The role also involves a degree of physical activity, including lifting animals of various weights, prolonged standing or walking, and the ability to work effectively in noisy environments, as well as adapting to any other situations that may arise.

Canada Summer Jobs:

The Canada Summer Jobs Program is a government initiative that provides funding to help employers create summer job opportunities for young people aged 15 to 30. The program’s goal is to support youth in gaining valuable work experience, develop job-related skills, and support their transition into the labour market. Through CSJ, not-for-profit organizations, public sector employers, and some private sector businesses are able to receive wage subsidies to hire eligible youth for full-time, temporary positions during the summer months.
